94% of rapists never spend a day in jail to to our fucked up justice system. And most rapists will rape again. If I were in her shoes, I would have had him killed.
@xxxBakeneckoxxx Then she should do it herself. People are always quick to act when someone else is doing the heavy lifting. This Dr is feeling tough but she should do it. She should go through and experience it fully what it means to kill someone. And see the downside to such an action and the price. justified or not. She might not be so eager to do it.
I think I speak for most of the viewers in that I would have loved to have seen Dr Melfi confess to Tony the truth about what had happened. In fact, I was desperate for it to happen and was left so, so disappointed at the end of the episode when Melfi decides against it. But the beauty of the Sopranos is that it never gives the viewer what they want and instead has the balls to portray its message and on reflection it was the perfect ending for the show as Melfi would never have sunk to crime.
does anyone know if there's a clip on youtube where all the docs sit at dinner, and Elliot leaks to everyone that Melfi is treating Tony? That's S6 P2
I think one of the most amazing things about this episode was it proved how morally sound Melfi is. Not only did she resist the temptation to set Tony on the rapist, thus sparing herself any involvement in such brutal crime, she also did her duty to Tony as a patient, sparing him from having to do something that would have undermined what little progress he had made in the therapy sessions.
This was a very disturbing episode and I thought it was exploitive at first, and it was only later that I realized how clever it was; it put the viewer in Dr. Melfi's place; would you ask a favor from a hardened sociopathic gangster like this? If you did, you'd go from the frying pan into the fire, not just owing him, but inescapably involved in his world. It would come back to bite you eventually, or you'd always worry that it would.
I was so disappointed when she didn't tell Tony about it. Man, this episode was fantastic, and yes I see how the ending worked into it all, but it's brilliant how it made me want, so much, for Tony to take revenge for her. That's excellent writing right there.
You've never been wronged if you never wished that for day, you could be Dr. Melfi, and being asked by a mob boss, "is there something wrong, can I help"
I actually believe that Melfi may have erred in this decision. Whatever about her own moralisings and rationalisations regarding the incident the thought must have occurred to her that the probability of this man committing a similar crime or worse are significantly higher since he escaped any punitive measures for this. Granted killing someone over what they "might do" is no basis for a sound judicial system but will she feel if/when this man rapes/kills another woman. Though provoking T.V!
I was totally ok with her not saying it to Tony, it really was the only coherent thing possible with her (really great) character. Though, I wish Tony would have knew some other way and would have made that guy taste his hellish fury.
It would have been way too obvious for her to tell him. That's everybody's first instinct when they get wronged, go to the person they know can immediately get you some satisfaction. But she's not that type of person though.
What's the worst possible thing could happen if she did tell Tony Soprano about the rape ? Would she be a partner in crime and felt guilty all of her life because some scumbag got whacked for being a rapist ? Melfe is a selfish bitch for not helping getting rid of the world of that rapist, because the rapist wouldn't stop at her, he would continue to rape. That's what rapists do. Sometimes you have to choose the lesser evil.
I used to watch seasons at a time when they came out on dvd and I remember this episode so well. a bunch of my friends and I were in our college appartment basically screaming at the tv "FUCKING TELL HIM!!!" when the part comes and melfi is looking at tony in the other chair silently. UHG!!! I still can't believe she didn't. It drove me nuts that nothing ever happened. Even if he found out in a later episode, that would have been awesome too.
Great episode. I can't believe she lost the emmy to Falco, i mean don't get me wrong Carmella is epic, but she's won 3 emmys. Although i had trouble making it through the scene = / sadd i wish she told him though, but it would've ruined her character i guess.
@14dhawk no no no...Dr. Melfi was very needed for the show...she was the show's conscious...while it could be easy to like Tony and develop affection for him, Dr. Melfi did to an extent, her and the shrinks reminded us that he was a sociopath whom made blood money
@sea6789 I would. But I'm not her. It would have been too big a change in the character. Yes, she was brutally raped. Yes, she had the opportunity to see that man destroyed. But she chose not too, and that's who the character is.
It would have been a better storyline is she told him. Emphasise the point that no one is perfect, and even though Tony is the 'gangster', a person who is high on the social ladder will still use a 'gangster' for their own wishes.
She did a radio interview, towards the end of the last season. I was very disappointed to learn tht the real L.Bracco is a bumbling idiot. The interviewer(s) even made a joke out of it after the commercial. She was great in Sopranos and the only other thing I've seen her in, Goodfellows. I guess she needs someone to rite her lines, because, based on what I heard---from her own, unscripted mouth----she's, uh, not terribly bright. The "Melfi/Milf" comment below, is right on.
"If you're raised on a steady diet of Hollywood movies and network television, you start to think, 'Obviously there's going to be some moral accounting here'. That's not the way the world works. It all comes down to why you're watching. If all you want is to see big Tony Soprano take that guy's head and bang it against the wall like a cantaloupe The point is—Melfi, despite pain and suffering, made her moral, ethical choice and we should applaud her for it. That's the story."
@taxmonkey123 smells like bullshit. sure, the world doesnt work that way, but the question remains what would you do if you were in her shoes. i dont think even mother theresa could sit and do nothing like melfi did. not only that but the guy got off on a legal technicality as i recall so the "moral, ethical choice" argument doesnt really hold. melfi also had an obligation toward other helpless women who could be raped by this guy.
@SubwayRatt "The 'moral, ethical choice' argument doesnt really hold"? What about the morality of somebody who doesn't want to resort to violence in response to being the victim of violence? There are countless women who would have done the exact same thing, not to mention the fact that there are many rape victims who feel horribly embarrassed and ashamed of what happened to them and don't want to let other people in or open up about it.
The Employee of the Month episode was the first time that I saw The Sopranos. The rape scene with Lorriane Bracco laying in the stairwell crying ripped my heart out. I was like what is this show. I coun't to watch it every Sunday night. Sundays couldn't come quick enough. I wish that Lorriane would of won the emmy for that episode but she didn't. Brilliant acting on her part. Great episode but that scene just make me want to cry.
@x170063 I so wnated thetwo of them to ge together, even though I knew it wouldn't be realistic. On the other hand, she was the only one, due to her profession, of course, to really know him. Maybe as a couple, they would have worked just fine? makes ya wonder...
@x170063 Same, same, it does show the ambiguity of morality. We all know killing people is wrong etc...but well ALL wanted Melfi to tell Tony. Because it would have been awesome. Just like if one of our mothers/sisters had been raped...we would do the same.
@x170063 lol everyone wanted that...and everyone felt the same way at the end. A very similar feeling to how the series ended...just but to black and all you can do is accept it.
pretty much, tony is like a dog that can get vicious at any second, but because of his respect for melfi shes also learned she could set him on people if she wishes..
Melfi actually does the immoral thing by not having Tony kill the rapist. By letting him go, he's free to keep raping. Odds are this won't be a one time thing. She's pretty much an accomplice to his next crime.
You can´t be serious! She was a victim of a violent crime and yes, the justice system failed, but what do you think happens if people just start attacking and killing for whatever reasons outside the law? You think that makes for a safe socitey? Do you believe in anarchy?
Of course I am wishing this guy the worst too but Jennifer showed some great inner strength not being blinded by brooding feelings of vengeance. The creator of the show even said that was the point, her NOT going to Tony´s level but actually sticking with her own value system.
Anarchy is more appropriately defined in this situation by NOT doing something if the system doesn't serve justice. If the system fails and individual citizens become the last possible line of defence, the last possible source of justice, while it is regretable, it's better than NO ONE doing anything.
In this case however, she would have misused the doctor-patient relationship for her own purpose and other than that IMO the mafia is not cut out to morally make things right or serve justice..
Besides all they could have done is whack the guy or like you said, cut his dick off and IMO this would do no good to anyone (unless he rapes another woman which is 50:50 I guess) and is not my understanding of justice.
In the end nothing can undo what the guy did to JM.
Couldn't have said it better. And additionally there is a loss of respect for the ex-husband, Richard. That's the mother of his son. Ever hear of the honor of your family? This would not even need to be debated in other cultures, like Japan's.
Lorraine Bracco is such a great actress, one of my favorites. I wish she would have told Tony that she was raped though, so he could have feed that guy is own pesh!
Dr melfi once quotes Freud, saying he said "dreams are wishes"- then surely by her own reasoning it's her subconscious wish to seek revenge on her rapist...
She couldn´t have lived with herself if she had done that,haha.. plus, then Tony would keep asking criminal favours of her cos he would have some dirt on her, right ?
It keeps freezing because of your system, retard. My computer plays it perfectly and without freezing. Get something better than a Compaq. Moreover, what the fuck do you expect imbecile? It's YouTube. You want high quality? Go to Veoh. Moreover, no one has complained about it except you.
If you type in sopranos employee of the month it should come up... I think. It takes you to a page where you have to verify your age so that's most likely it. I say "I think" because I much as I loved this episode, I just did not want to see the sexual assault again.
Channel 9 kept running promos when this episode aired with Dr Melfi sprawled in the stairwell, sobbing, with her underwear down at her feet... oh god, it was gutwrenching.
I bet Melfi was a great fuck.Imagine..Shes layed down on those cold hard steps,Her knickers have been pulled off or too the side and he slips it in.All you can here is NO COME ON PLEASE N..N..NO..AAARRGGHH..Then the giving in to it.Accept it..enjoy it..I did.Soo good..

She couldn´t have lived with herself if she had done that,haha.. plus, then Tony would keep asking criminal favours of her cos he would have some dirt on her, right ?

this shit quality video keeps freezing get a better system u fuckhead

It keeps freezing because of your system, retard. My computer plays it perfectly and without freezing. Get something better than a Compaq. Moreover, what the fuck do you expect imbecile? It's YouTube. You want high quality? Go to Veoh. Moreover, no one has complained about it except you.

Someone obviously needs a therapist like Melfi...
kittenic44 3 years ago
@ctnovo1 actually it's your system, don't call someone else a 'fuckhead' when your system is the one that is fucked, fuckhead
How does it feel?
everyone else can watch this video perfectly, no freezing
get a better video card and stop bitching, because it will not make a new system appear no matter how much bitching you do

@ctnovo1
If a youtube video keeps freezing, the most likely cause is; it hasn't buffered or it has a shite connection..fuckhead.

If you type in sopranos employee of the month it should come up... I think. It takes you to a page where you have to verify your age so that's most likely it. I say "I think" because I much as I loved this episode, I just did not want to see the sexual assault again.
Channel 9 kept running promos when this episode aired with Dr Melfi sprawled in the stairwell, sobbing, with her underwear down at her feet... oh god, it was gutwrenching.

the way she talks to her shinkr its a litle bit like Do Corleone speech in godfather 1
"You could have come to me bonasera, but you prefered the rigtheous path, and what did that helped you with?..."
