Ulbricht tried to play his game (bringing down the number of border points, diplomats who had to show ID) and almost won. Then Soviet tanks came to show GDR leadership that Moscow was in charge. General Clay did a good job showing some teeth instead of the acceptance all over again. Soviets understood and Russians understand force, strength. If you're weak, the gonna get you.
Regretfully true. The only language the communists understood was strength. As it turned out, supplying the USSR free of charge in WW2 was a major political error - no matter how sensible it appears to a western mentality.
Imagine if one of the tank gunners fingers had slipped on the button or if he'd been drunk and thought "Oh, what the hell!!!!" !!!! I would not be writing this now!!!!!
@Id3ntity29 you should check that when this incident happened the t55 significantly outclassed the m60 in armor, in fact this crisis brought as a consequence a redesign of the m60. Later the m60 could stand against the t55, but in 1961 it didnt have a chance
@blackchampagner I hope you are right. Only this time, try not to make the mistake of attacking Russia. It would be much wiser to become allies. Germany + Russia should be brothers in arms this time around, not brothers in death. The defeat of Nazi Germany was essentially the beginning of the fall of the USSR, because the entire world turned their attention on defeating the Soviet Union once Germany was no longer a threat.
@bklynguy27 America won the cold war cus the soviet union collapsed and they disband most of there nuclear weapons and the us didn't want shit with the Georgian conflict cus it didn't involve us and we have our hands full. Stupid piece of shit
The Soviet Leader at the time, his son write a book saying his father, after visiting the United States, said the Soviet Union could never win the Cold War
@andayy the russians had much more nuclear arsenal than the U.S., and probably still do. that's why we don't mess with them now,and the U.S. didn't dare interfere into the Georgian conflict.
@bklynguy27 Well firstly the US did interfere with the Georgian conflict, equipping and airlifting in almost 1000 Georgian soldiers, secondly the arsenal sizes are meaningless. 400 bombs is enough to destroy the world. Everything else is waste.
So weird to look at how close we got to war with Russia. If a gun went off at all, even from an accident, the whole damn world could have been blown to bits in that instant.
Soviets had 400 divisions in Eastern Europe. The US had..I think about 10 divisions. Everyone who was there knew that any conflict would quickly go nuclear as it was the only real way to stop the Soviets

The were fighting for "power", the Latin version of it which is "vis" (Power / Force / Potestatem).
I agree with you fully on both of your comments...

andresrojas22 10 months ago
@andresrojas22 I wouldn't count on that, those American tanks appear to be M60 Pattons, easily the equal of the T55, possibly superior...

The Cold War was just so utterly rediculous and unneccesary.
The Americans should have learnt to live with Communism and the USSR rather than bring the world to the brink of disaster.
Totally provoking the Russians in this vid!
NorthernBoy2010 1 year ago
@NorthernBoy2010 Wrong. Russia was also provoking the west with the spreading of communism in the east of Europe.
