I wonder why they passed up one of the signature disc jockeys who broadcast from Birdland each night. Anyone remember "the all night all frantic one Symphony Sid, when everything goes crazee on Jayzee" George Shearing provided the theme "Jumping with Symphony Sid"
Kind of amazing as a Top 40 format they were #1 for close to 20 years. A nice anthology. Let's not forget the amazing job Mark Simone does as both a talk host and keeper of the flame for the Musicradio heydays Saturday nights-6-9p
WABC's best days clearly came between 1960 and 1980 with the great voices and personalities of Harry "The Morning Mayor" Harrison, Ron Lundy, Big Dan Ingram and Cousin Brucie Morrow? (All of whom, of course, put in still MORE time at 101,1 on the FM band, which just happens still to be one of NYC's top two stations today...)
@Bentom86 I think you mean it WASN'T an amazing station untill 5:29!! Unless your deaf. Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Mark Levin & Bob Grant are todays Paul Revere. They & Fox News are the only ones telling us the TRUTH!!!!!!!!!!
@PatriotConservative1 My hearing is just fine, thank you...but since there seems to be a comprehension problem, I'll spell it out for you. WABC used to be a station whose music defined NYC as a true melting pot of diversity, and during a dangerous time in this world when conservative-minded folks did whatever it took to destroy those ideals. Those"patriots"you named have made millions by spewing their veiled messages of hate. I would rather be deaf than listening to them & their filth.
Hey they totally missed 1970's Harry Harrison who was on for years and years. HELLOOOO LOVE this is Harry Harrison...
WiKipedia: Harry Harrison was the morning air personality at WABC from 1968 until 1979. His on air style made him an institution in New York radio. On WABC he was able to balance the young sound of Top 40 radio with adult charisma that was so vital to mass appeal radio stations of this era. How can they forget Harry ??? I see they had a picture of him but never mentioned him.
@SendinK9 "Helllooo Love...Good morning everyone" was Ron Lundy's signature signon. Harry Harrison's signature was "Mornin Mom! Gettin the kids off to school, dad off to work"
@BobtheMediaGuy, Ron Lundy... Good memory Bob!! I forgot about Ron and your 100% right.! Boy its been a long time and I sure do miss those summer days listening to those guys, always brightened up my day. I had a radio on my Schwinn banana seat bike, the radio was the new thing on the market, had a light, siren, horn, AM radio so I can listen to Ron and Harry and it mounted on the handle bar. Thanks Bob for jarring my memory, much appreciated. America was a better place back then.
@HollywoodTruths You are absolutely right. He ruined a great radio format. There's a history of radio in the 50s and 60s in Rick Sklar's book Rockin' America. He was a WABC program director.
