Just so EVERYBODY knows, I work for Red Deer Emergency Services (Red Deer is a city of just under 100'000 people) and this is the County Volunteer Fire Service, NOT the city!
@canadian5687 Just to be clear Mr. or Ms. Medic, this is not Red Deer County of which I am a proud, non-unionized member. This is elsewhere in Alberta.
@steven200312 Siding and roofing are cheap to replace, that is if the house doesn't burn down because you didn't FULLY check for extention. If you knew anything about building construction you know that that's an attic SPACE, not room. And unlike older brick homes in the UK, it's easy to saw through a wood frame wall rather than solid brick. And a vent hole is not required in every fire, it just depends on where the fire was.
@jacobstearn14048 I can assure you that I am not an armchair QB. If any of my FFs ever did something like this they would be benched and/or let go. In fact we benched a guy for walking away from a ladder while a crew was on the roof. He failed to understand why this was unacceptable and he is no longer on the department. The whole point of this video is to learn from it. I use this video the same way I use videos of FFs attacking car fires without SCBA. Laugh, scream, or cry at them, and LEARN.
people who make these videos are the same ones that do nothing but read textbooks. anyone can point out the wrong doings but dont act like your shit dont stink. every dept. has its flaws so why not fix your own?
@dragonwalker77 An SCBA is a Self Contained Breathing Apparatus. not sure what u call them over there but a bottle of air on your back with a hose that conects with ur mask
Oh I see! Thanks! In German we use the shortform PA - Pressluftatmer -CompressedAirBreather. And those, who wear it are AGT - Atemschutzgeräteträger - Respiratory protection device "wearer" or something like this..lol
@dragonwalker77 Self Contained Breathing Apparatus, or SCBA. Not sure what you call them over there but bottle of air on ur back with a hose that conects with ur facemask
really there isnt near as much wrong here as you think. no signs of fire, i would hope they pulled wall first if it was a chimney fire. they had hose on vent company atleast at first. im giving them the benefit of a doubt now the way i woulda run it. eeryone packed up. vent and 2 others on roof AFTER pulling wall to check for spread. one at foot of ladder. and a team inside poppin holes. not venting but popping holes/checking for attic spread.
come on guys this is some crap here. yeah there are some things wrong with the techniques but i mean really are they susposed to take a snow shovel to the roof to clear it first? And i feel that you need to look at the root of the problem, no command and control. if you have good officers and chiefs that look out for and mandate traning for their guys stuff like this doesn't happen, Its always easy to be a monday morning quaterback and bust their stones but really guys come on.
This was a chimney fire with extention to the structure of the residence? If it was only steam why would they cut the hole in the house? They had to have known there was fire in the wall or else why cut the vent hole. They should have had full PPE, 2nd means of eggress, hoseline to protect the guy doing the cut. I could go on.
It is a good video for training purposes. I will include it and use it in our department.
Are you with that firedepartment or the news or the home owner?
I suppose that I should add that this is a very small department with a low call volume. I would think that they do know the right way to do this but got caught up in the moment and fell victim to skill fade. Use it or lose it.
@carryorchid regradless of weather they know how to do it, practice like its the real thing, thats why we train right? even training in our business is dangerous. Still should have had a guy on the base of the ladder and full PPE.
wow that was great. never seen such disreguard for safety in my life. no scba, no hand tools, and i'm sorry but a very poor place to vent, a probie with no experience would have done a better job then that. what kinda joke dept do you run with. do that at my volly station and you get to go home for about 30 days. GRADE F-
yah u said it correct! where are their scba's, i see at the end of the clip a ff comes with a scba on. the ff standing on the roof watching the red helmet make the cut, but who's providing him protection? possible they had another ladder on the other side? hmm interesting clip
my dad is a fireman and if anything like this happened, the people would be fired, one little mistake like that can cause people to lose their lives

@steven When the fire is in the attic space, which window will ventilate the area??
carryorchid 9 months ago
Why does every fire require a whole to be cut in the roof???? In the UK we open windows!
steven200312 9 months ago
@steven200312 it keeps our carpenters busy and we open windows too, with the sharp end of the halligan tool

Good video, good observations. Hope the department involved looks upon this as a tool to improve their safety.
