  • Did you get your screen tone and knives from an art store or the internet?

    Nice job BTW!

  • @PizzaandmangaruleXD I got tones from the internet and my friend from Japan. The knives I got at arts&crafts stores.

  • I really like how individualistic your noses are. I know alot of people say their weird. but I really like how unique it is. : )

  • @SchylerVanAlen Thank you! I'm glad you think that :) I get more negative comments on my noses than positive, but it's okay it's MY style! :)

  • the nose is weird.

  • @Tiibimn Thank you for letting me know your opinion.

  • noses

  • @Tiibimn What about them?

  • O_O thats amazing!

  • Thank goodness for photoshop we have an easier way to do this now >_<

  • @omnimon3000 That's not true. Just like any medium, it'll take awhile to learn and do. Besides, traditional toning looks (in my opinion) better than digital toning.

  • I still don't understand (even though i've bought a few tones), Wouldnt the use of the x-tracto knife go thru the tone and cut the paper?

  • @Puca028 It would if you let it go through. You have to practice to not cut underneath the tone layers. Practice by putting scotch tape (scotch tape because it's almost the same material) over something dark and try cutting it without messing up the bottom

  • how do you preserve the art so the screentones dont accidentally fall off ?

  • @kittzykk When you stick them on it'll stay on the page long after you use a burnisher/metal spoon to go over it

  • @edalineeilynd thank you ! I'm thinking about getting some screentones . I love your tutorials , I'll be sure to watch them again once I get mine (:

  • it's not easier to tone with grey color marker?

  • @GastonFranquin1 Toning is just a different way of doing art. Like painting vs colored pencils. :) I like to tone, it's fun for me

  • this is soo awesome! ;w;

    youre so talented >w>♥

  • @hydeandziek :) Thank you

  • So much work with just one page... amazing!! x3

  • @Hachiko53 lol! yes, i know! But i love toning...it's a lot of fun.

  • O_O SO THAT'S HOW YOU DO IT.

  • What kind of paper did you draw on?

  • @SnapperBoy648 It depends on what I'm drawing :) If I do "illustration"-type art, I use Strathmore's Smooth Bristol; and if I draw comics I use DELETER's manuscript paper

  • @edalineeilynd Awesome.Great job by the way. I never relized how cool a picture would look with screentones and I thought screentones were drawn. Awesome job! :D

  • @SnapperBoy648 I used to think screentones were drawn too! But I found out they weren't lol. Screentones are actually a lot of fun but it takes a lot of practice (mainly to NOT CUT YOURSELF! :P) and personally, I think traditional screentoning looks better than digital screentones

  • @edalineeilynd Ok then. After seeing how you use screentones, I want to start using them now too. Is there certain screentones that are drawn? Like for the ones in battle scenes in like, Bleach?

  • @SnapperBoy648 what do you mean by the "are there certain screentones that are drawn?" I think the tones used in battle scenes would have to be line and the dot ones (for shading). the lines would show action lines or effects.

  • @edalineeilynd Sorry. I just found out I was thinking of effects. Screentones seem interesting now when I see them.

  • how did you do the toning...quite confusing

  • ok the nose is a little creepy lol but i really like the drawing anyway!!^^

  • @AlphonseElric122 Thank you for your honest opinion :)

  • OMG YOU SUCK AT USING SCREENTONES! Just kidding, it looked awesome. For how long have you been using screentones?

  • @Marenay XD I've been using tones for 10+ years... I started when I was 18..oh! then it's like 12 years XD

  • oh so that's how they do the tones! god! i thought it's by hand.. i'm wondering how they do the little dots thingy.. in the manga......

  • @jurc61098 i used to think the same thing! my friend did them by hand...drawing the little dots. Then i found out they were sheets. Of course now, most people do them digitally. I don't really like to do anything digital so... i have a lot of sheets ;P

  • That was tha coolest thing Ive watched like ever lmao an I like your style of nose F tha haters ^^!

  • @kiokibrooke :D Thank you!

  • Please change the nose T__T

  • @PanDaPhu No, I won't change the nose. But thank you for your honest opinion

  • hey, uhm where do you buy your screentones? i'd like to try them out and have looked in ALL of my local art/comic stores but they are nowhere to be found OTL

  • How about a tutorial on tones, but with Copic Markers using their Cool, Warm, Natural and Tone gray sets? I'll be using those for my manga. Again, I need to buy more. Come on Christmas money! Come to momma! LOL

  • @AutumnKitten I actually don't have any of the COPIC sets. I just buy individual ones; I have a lot of different brand markers so I don't just have COPICs. Like I said in another comment, you don't just have to use COPICs, I actually love other markers more.

What did you want to know about tones (marker tones)?

  • AWESOME VIDEO!! what are you sticking onto your manga?

    As in, brand name.

    It looks amazing.

  • @AGnarlyProduction i'm using screentones. i use different brands. I think i used a bunch of DELETER tones for this one

  • Juust a question, I'm not being rude, but , May I ask what those circle things are by the nose ~ ? ^^

  • @MaryyFraserr That's...how she draws noses...>.<

  • where do you buy screen tones i gotta know

  • Comment removed

  • what are the knives called that your using

  • @hburger1235 I used a retractable X-acto knife and a regular utility knife

  • Were you at Sac anime Summer?! Are you coming to AOD?? I'd love to see you at work! ^u^

  • @12SailorLover21 Hi! I was at SacAnime (no artist table, though) on Fri and Saturday. What's AOD? (So i don't think I'll be going there LOL) I've been kinda thinking of getting a table at Sac-con and the next SacAnime (depends on work schedule)... but I'm trying to finish up some comics first.

You're kinda giving me an idea on doing a "screentone" demonstration at the conventions... lol :D I think it'd be neat, but I don't think they'd allow me to bring knives *cough*

  • @edalineeilynd AOD is in San Fransisco in Feb ^o^

    I'd go see that @u@

  • @12SailorLover21 Ooh... I'd definitely want to go! It's where I used to live! :P

  • i bought my first sceen tones yesterday do u have s tip i can use? ^^;;

  • @jisunee602 hi! uhh... tips? BE CAREFUL! because you're using knives and also be careful with cutting your artwork! always cut a little bigger than where you need to apply the tone. change the angles around to create different effects :) i'm trying to do a screentone tutorial but i haven't been able to (so sad).

what else would you like to know?

  • I watched several of your videos; you're so sweet and polite on your comments and replies. This one in particular is a first for me; screen toning is something I associate with garments.

Would be fabulous to read more about your trainings in your bio. In ether case, I will check your DevianArt page soon. Hope you do sell some of your art, molskine.

  • @r3tkd2 Hi! Thank you for commenting and watching my videos :) I didn't know about screentoning being used for garments. Same word/different terms? :P

What would you like to know about my trainings? i actually have never gone to art school/art classes (well, one art class in middle school but I don't think that would count ;P)

I try not to sell my art because I don't think my art is good enough. I only sell if I'm desperately in need of money :P~ Let me know if you have any more questions! :D

  • @edalineeilynd You're truly gifted. And your art is most definitely apt to be sold. I will e-mail you soon. Thanks for taking the time.

  • @r3tkd2 thank you! you're being extremely kind :D

  • where do u get the toning stuff. i don't have an art store near me. and i might need help explaining on how to do them. i am REALLY BAD at directions. and ur welcome about liking ur vid. no prob.

  • @RaesAnimes i got them a LOOOONG time ago (10 years ago) online, my friend from Japan sent me some, and another sent me some. They don't sell them in art stores...

I'm working on a screentone series right now so check up on that in the future. I already have the introduction posted up, so if you'd like to see that just go find it on my page :)

  • thank u 4 making this vid. really apprecated! i personally HATE toning on the computer or even drawing on it. i need to work with my own hands to make it work. this vid. really will help me in the long run. i was dradding the day i would have 2 use the computer, 2 do wat i can do myself.

  • @RaesAnimes thanks for commenting and liking this video :) I, also, hate toning with the computer but I only do it if i HAVE to. I'll be making a toning series soon... hopefully my editting program doesn't crash again -_-; so sad... ;____;

  • wait, HOW DID U DO THE SCREENTONES TRADITIONALLY???? i only can do screentones digitally.....

  • @arisakitsuna1998 i love doing toning traditionally. actually, a lot of my stuff is done traditionally. I just prefer doing things traditionally. i also have digital tone software but like i said, i prefer to tone traditionally. it's more fun/easier to me. :P

  • it was pretty good but the nose made me laugh xD

  • @MangaFTW96 thanx for letting me know your opinion :)

  • Truely amazing!!

  • @0n3ang3l :) thanx

  • +_+ holy....waoa that was great!! you can see the page come to life here!!...sigh shame I'm really crap with scalpels!!

Btw do you think I could use copic intead as a toner??

  • @SlightlyWishfull how come i never saw this comment? O_o; Sorry for the late reply! You can use marker as shading but you have to be careful and try not to make it splotchy. There was a comic I read once called "RHONDA" (i forgot who it was by -_-; so that doesn't help) and all her shading was done with marker.

  • i love how i just learned about this(:

it's wonderful, thank you for uploading this!

and if you dont mind, where did you buy your screentones at?

  • @JacesCurse screentoning by hand is a LOT of fun! just try not to cut yourself and be careful with all the flying tones that'll stick to you XD~

i bought my screentones a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time ago (they're collecting dust) <--about 8-10 years ago and some were given to me from someone in japan. i got them online but i don't remember where :(

  • @edalineeilynd how much did you get? I though they would run out pretty fast

  • @SlightlyWishfull they DO run out fast but this drawing is a small drawing. The ones I used have different sized sheets. There's the mini-size and there's the regular big size. The prices will vary depending on where you buy them. The ones I purchased were about $2 a sheet for the small ones and the big ones were about $6. Also, a lot were given to me for free from my friend.

  • you use screentones by hand as well?! thats awesome! 5/5

  • i don't like digital toning. to me it looks the same and i don't like that (plus i don't like doing digital art anywa ;P) and i've done it for years and years so :D yay?

  • awesome! Looks really cool but hard to do.

    5/5 stars ^.^

  • :) thanks it's kinda hard and time consuming ;P

  • amazing work... this is actually the first time ive heard of screening and i cant wait to try it. It must take a lot of work and pratice though.

  • screentoning was used for manga (the black dots to create different shades) and comics for black and white printing. they used to do it by hand (like I did in this video) but now it's mostly digital. I personally like the traditional way :P I think it looks better.

I've toned for a LONG time, I just haven't done it in awhile ;P and I wanted to play with them again. And it does take practice because you have to be careful

  • err...the thing cut me off ;_;

You have to be careful not to cut your drawing, yourself, cut off the tones completely (when you're scraping), etc.

  • AWESOME!!! *o* How do you have the patience for that o_O;

  • if i have to finish something...i WILL finish it whether i sleep/eat or whatever XD.

  • awesome, as always!

  • thanks :D

  • wow. Stunning!

  • :) thanks

  • whoo your to cool lol :b

  • lol, thanks :)

  • Ahaha, you pick the most suiting musics for the drawings' atmosphere even if you say you use them randomly ♥

I liked this a lot :) damn good job.

  • this one i tried hard to find music that'll fit :P they gave me a limited selection and I liked this one so.. :P
