Idilic footage... however Orson Welles never stayed in the Basque Country during his years in Spain, he rather bought himself an old house in Castile (Ávila)
@belisariusorb That's a stupid comment, I'm Basque and Spanish 100%, we are totally free, but we want to get rid os a marxist didctature, That's whay independentist people want to build, a dictature
@newhuskytwenty I'm Catalan and 0% Spanish. We are not free, our laws and statutes can be cancelled by politically motivated judges in Madrid. Freedom will come when we control our own destiny, separated from Spain with a democracy within the EU. That's not a dictatorship, it's considered quite normal in other parts of the world.
Orson Welles makes a few wrong statements in this documentary imo. He crearly points out the nationalist sight when he claims "basques are not spanish nor french" And "nations expand borders while people prefer to avoid them".
Both are wrong and contradictory. He's talking about something he knows very little about, basque people, nationalism and the history of nations in europe.
That's a naïve-romantic-nationalist point of view. Being spanish is nothing but having the spanish citizenship, what else could it be?
Basques south of the Pyrenees have the spanish citizenship so they are as spanish as they can be. And basques north of the pyrenees are as french as they can be. Wether they prefer to play soka tira instead of rugby is absolutelly irrelevant.
Hey I am a basque American and I would deeply apresiate if you can send me this documentary. My father would love to see this. Thank you and God bless you
is just sad the image that orson welles shows of the basques choosing a village of primitive sheppards as the representation of basques this is absurd he could have talked with UNAMUNO or BAROJA instead but ofcourse these people would have gave him another impression not valide for his comical movie

orson wells didnt know about the origins and history of basques a prove of that is his film.the moment in which this film is been made is after the start of the basque nacionalisme by his father SABINO ARANA if anyone of you wants to know about the basis of the basque nacionalisme just google SABINO ARANA and you will laugh your ass of about the basque racial complex
factunthju you are just a poor piece of english shit.spain dont need assholes like you and its just funny that a fucking english could dare to blame someone of being racist.
i am english and have been to all parts of spain and understand why the basque's want to be separated,i say separated and not independent because i feel the basque's are self sufficient and already and always have been independent and spain is just a selfish, greedy ,racist ignorant country that cant even run a company business properly....i have lived and worked in oviedo, merida and most of catalunya and i can honestly say that spanish are no good for anything and vile racists
An Englishman accusing Spaniards of racism? You are a bigot, like many of your countrymen. There are more episodes of racism in any London neighborhood than in the whole of Spain. It is funny your views on "inability" of the Spanish for the business taking into account that Spanish Banks (Santander) are buying English banks (Abbey) or that Spanish companies run Brittish airports. Your such a cunt!

PAÍS Vasco, Basque Country, Pais Basque, Baskenland...y suma y sigue.

Basques and Catalans will achieve independence in this generation, believe me.
Spain will be welcome to remain Spain and enjoy its own culture and limited politics.

@hoselui in 2 words, people power - people will demand to be released from the Spanish corpse, I mean state, and in time will be permitted to do so.
