@rattlesnake6913 Its probably that he is using the neck pickup, it gives a nice clear tone which is perfect for shredding, you need to be pretty clean with your technique though if you wanna pull it off...mistakes become very easy to spot!

not being theoretically trained is a bad idea in anything. Yes you can be good at it, yes there are legends like Hendrix who weren't, but it only makes you better. He plays by position and what he hears, not what he feels. In order to play what you feel you'd have to know the notes. Otherwise you'd play a great deal of wrong notes in trying to feel the right ones. It's just a good idea.

From a musician's point of view I would say that Dream Theater has years upon years of experience on these guys and I still prefer Into Eternity. But these bands really shouldn't be compared.

But theory is just the explanation and understanding of music. knowing theory doesnt hurt your playing, you just have to know when and what to use it for.

He's not leaving anything out at all, it just sounds wierd when you play it slowly. When you play it faster it'll sound more like it.

Yes, especially when he said he is not a "theory" guy, he plays by "feeling". Translation: "I don't give a shit about real music theory, it just bores me, I just like to run up and down the fretboard as fast as possible using some scales". Though I think it's great he takes some time to teach others.
