I don't know if you said that ironically or not, but thought I'd point out that Terry did indeed get awarded a long overdue knighthood in the 2009 New Years Honours list.
Oh, we know he did get that long overdue knighthood. I have seen his interview after the ceremony on YT. No irony when it comes to the creator of a world to challenge our intellect and for our amusement
Great to see that you have discovered one of the best Guru's living today! And also happens to be one of amy fav authors! lol =) 5* Love from One Discworld fan to another
Oh, I agree, these sayings are quite wonderful, I love Terry Pratchett's work. I didn't mean to imply that they are merely comedy, but I always thought the fire one was supposed to be a humourous take on the old teach a man to fish saying.
soem really great quotes on their huz rachael :)

True gems of wisdom, Terry Pratchett certainly deserves that knighthood.
Mae West and Benjamin Franklin had wonderful antidotes about life too.

I only know one or two by Mae but Ben indeed was a master.

He is a very wise man. His view on the world and the way he discribes things sure has made me look differently at a lot of things.
Thanks Paul

I really liked the open mind one, and I've been using the give a man a fire one for a long time now, it always gets a few laughs.
AlanMRedman 3 years ago
They are not just for laughs. If you think about them they actually make sense.
About that fire setting proverb: Some people actually solve problems that way thinking they have an optimal solution.
PuppyZwolle 3 years ago
Oh, I agree, these sayings are quite wonderful, I love Terry Pratchett's work. I didn't mean to imply that they are merely comedy, but I always thought the fire one was supposed to be a humourous take on the old teach a man to fish saying.

You are right. It is that. But it is about the supidity of believing you know what's best for someone else.
Exsamples of how this already is historic:
Fossil fuel
Rabbits in Australia.
Native Americans
Missionaries trying to dress 'the natives'
It isn't always about people dying. There may be other things dying like culture, faith, a nation, plants.....
