  • What guitar is that? It's an ESP, but which one?

  • Looks to me like a custom based off of the STEF B-7. The bridge looks custom to me but it is hard to see.

  • The body is definitely the STEF B-7 but the headstock is custom, judging by the longer version of this.

  • @LessthanJake14 It's an ESP STEF B-7 7 string baritone, most likely a custom shop model. Devin tunes it in GCGCGCE (Open C tuning).

  • @Spermwhales93 Yeah, knew about the tuning and found out that it's a custom STEF B-7 (due to the different headstock).

Wish he'd use seven strings more often, he implements the low G well rather than just CHUG-CHUG-CHUG-CHUG.

  • @LessthanJake14 He's going to be using his Peavey 7 string on Deconstruction, so he is going to use them more often. He probably doesn't need to use them that much because he has guitars that are tuned in Open B and Open B flat now, so he can get almost all the range of a conventionally tuned 7 string on a 6 string.

  • @Spermwhales93 Yeah, saw that on his Youtube channel. I GASsed straight away.

However, he's not using Open B for Deconstruction, only on some tracks; like he did with Ki and Addicted.

  • Beautiful playing and guitar! Looks so evil >_>

  • That sweep section is insane! I feel like if I watch it too many times my brain will explode.

  • i dont think its sweeping. it looks more like economy picking. its just the way his guitar is tuned gives the wider intervals and sounds more like arpeggios.

  • I can post a video of the sweeps slowed down if you want.

its a diminished sweep arpeggio in open C.

  • actually i think youre right....the more i look at it, it sorta reminds me of those diminished sweeps in this godless endeavour from nevermore.

will you post a vid with sweeps?

    thanx man!!

  • It is sweeping but not arpeggio's, check out his right hand when he sweeps but i don't think those are arpeggios.

  • Diminished arpeggios.

  • @Murdoch584 its pretty straight forward actually when you break it down. Its symmetrical diminished 3 string sweep arpeggios with 1st note of each 8 note pattern changing. The open tuning makes the lick sound wider than would be in standard tuning.... Also Devin is a king.

  • is that part 16th notes or what? I suck at reading tabs and I am just curious...thanks

  • yepp I think so :)

  • LOL "...ironically enough...a new black guitar"

  • i know what you mean. iv got emg 81/85 in my ibanez rgt42dxfm and i wouldnt change them for anything!!!

i want to get the guitar wired so that each emg pickup gets fed by a 9volt battery... i hear it makes them even more aggressive.

there is a demonstration somewhere on youtube.

  • what guitar is that? i know its an esp 7 string but does anyone know the exact model and how much they go for??

  • Its an custom one, i've heard this model is 8000$dollars Oo'

  • oh.......well........ my dreams have been crushed!!! that's way too much for me...Jesus..

back to the 7 string xiphos.

  • id buy the xiphos in the first place, but put some emgs in it

  • yeah, i hear that. its a great guitar and the price is right..but im not so sure about those DiMarzio D Activators myself.

  • d activators actually sound way better clean than emgs but just like anyone will tell you d activators are TRYING to replicate an active pickup sound but it doesn't sound like an active pickup it has the punch like an active and the articulation but even that doesn't make it sound as good. the emgs are quieter and much more punchy and ballsy but they lack warmth too i'd get emgs too probably

  • that guitar is tuned so fucking low.

CGCGCGE thats damn near an octave down.

  • Close, it's actually GCGCGCE ;)

  • @d0ct0rg0nz076 its true haha I enjoy the B F# B F# B D tuning myself.. dunno what its called, but its awesome.

  • @TheNotDone It's called Open B.

  • @Spermwhales93 actually it would be D# for the high string in open B.. I tune just that string down half a step.... gives it a more minor/ tense sound.

  • @TheNotDone I've never heard of anyone doing that before! You must be the only person who uses Open B minor.

  • awsome bra

  • is that a standard ESP guitar ??

  • damn sexy guitar

  • lol i catch myself singing the lyrics out loud when he plays that little solo! syl are great!

  • lol me too i love this song

  • It's a 7 string :)

  • dude i never knew Devin was this good. I'll have to check out more of there stuff. And yes i agree with drmoshie, Muhammed Suicmez is amazing.

  • Damn you, Devin!! You make it look so easy. That was pretty kickass. Is it just me or does the neck on that guitar look pretty wide?

Either way, sweet guitar, kickass song and solo, Strapping young lad and Devin Townsend kick so much ass, I fuckin love em.

  • The neck on that guitar is wide, it has to be to make room for the 7th string ;)

  • Too humble for his own good :). Guy can REALLY play the guitar!

  • AND can really compose shit !

he's more musician than mere guitarist

  • Ah! I'm Horny Now... Thanks Devin

  • This man is my idol...hes the only person that can scream/sing vocals and sweep pick...i want to be just like him *shaves head*

  • Muhammed Suicmez from Necrophagist is able to do that too. He plays some of the craziest shit and sings over it.

    The guys from Nile too.

  • fantastic reasoning and argument structure! well done

  • nile rules dude

  • ROFL I posted that comment so long ago..but I really dont like nile.

  • what guitar is that

  • it's custom made 7-string baritone guitar made by ESP guitars. retail price about 6000 dollars.

  • O.O

  • *starts saving*

  • I didn't know it was baritone or that it sold anywhere but their custom shop, but I'd be 100% willing to pay that for that guitar, ESP is the best, period.

  • devin rules.

  • Don't forget that Dev has to sing the chorus of the song whilst playing that mental riff at the end there. Makes him a fricken legend in my opinion

  • yes, yes it does

  • legend indeed

  • took the words out my mouth... blags my head that he can do that.

  • well now you've said it.. if i didnt know it was devy i'd say it is jeff loomis playing "this godless endeavor" it really sounds like it! i love both of them and they're my favorite guitarists with mikael akerfeldt.

  • Devin Townsend is a master of both the 7 and 6 string!

  • Better than Jeff Loomis in my honest opinion.

  • wow, pretty good
