It's failed, move the fuck on. 60 - 70% of tamils live in the capital of Sri Lanka Colombo, I've been there, it's a fantastic place. Everybody lives in peace and harmony, there is no you are this, you are that from what I saw, the signage seems to be up in 3 languages, english, tamil and sinhalese. Most of the buddhists there also seem to follow the Hindu religion, not surprisng since Buddha himself was a Hindu,I can't help but feel everyone has been sold such a massive lie by the TN criminals
this is such a load of bs, poor Sri Lanka. I can't believe they have to deal with this utter hogwash. Oh some random tosser, with his face blanked, his voice not even allowed to be put on, with some random translator equates to some bullshit, get fucked honestly. What a load of utter hogwash. Lets face it the truth is the TN criminal enterprise tried to attain their bs never existent homeland in India and failed, moved onto Sri Lanka, then the Maldives and Malaysia. Caused a bs war for 30 years+
We don't pass judgements on the way you treat your aborigines. And we've been a loyal friend and helped you to thwart illegal immigration. The way we deal with terrorists is our internal matter.Infact, you guys should follow our methods to deal with terrorists!
@roshan2137 Our military, and people sworn to protect us, do not massacre, rape or persecute Aborigines today. In fact we havent for many decades and our politicians have acknowleged, and extended national apologies for the crimes commited in our past, and young children are educated on Aboriginal issues in schools. But the same cant be said for Sri Lanka. It continues its atrocities against an ethnic minority and refuses to acknowlege the truth
@1982mockingbird1982 As I said,we don't pass judgements on others.Massacres against aborigines did take place in the past and they were horrible crimes. After many years,Kevin Rudd apologised.Similarly,Sri Lanka needs it's own time to heal.Future generations will look into the conflict and build a new egalitarian Sri Lanka.Societies need their own time to heal and the process of reconciliation is an internal process.Foreigners can't tell Sri Lanka to do this & that. They need to gradually evolve!
@roshan2137 Well Im glad we agree on the need for progress and enlightenment in Sri Lanka. But why should people outside Sri Lanka not be allowed to participate in public discourse on the issues inside Sri Lanka? Is it also unacceptable for an Australian to comment on the Rwanda massacre or holocaust? Our government isn't getting involved.
And sometimes societies don't "evolve" on their own. Look at China. I think nationalism, racism and chauvinism may be deeply entrenched in Sri Lanka's culture
@1982mockingbird1982 Everytime a foreign government criticises Sri Lanka, president Rajapaksa's popularity increases and he'll use it to whip up nationalist sentiments among majority Sinhalese. So,outside pressure can be counter productive. These are former british colonies and they don't like fingers being wagged at them. What Foreign forces should do is to help Sri Lanka to stand up on it's own feet. That is exactly what Australia govt. is doing with demining assistance and child soldiers' rehab!
@1982mockingbird1982 Societies do evolve. And so will China. But let's look at Sri Lanka. In 1971 & 1988/9 there were youth insurrections due to economic distress. Most of the rebels were JVP unemployed uni grads.Later on,government went on to improve standards. Now Sri Lanka has the highest literacy in the region and JVP has no intentions of another armed struggle. They are a legitimate political party now!Despite the greatest of adversities,Sri Lanka remains a vibrant democracy and resilient nation
@1982mockingbird1982 Now even in Australia, for generations people and governments lived in denial.Similarly,in Sri Lanka it'll take a long time to come to terms with what has happened.I think you'll have to explain me a bit about continuing "atrocities" because I just returned from nothern sri lanka and didn't see "atrocities".But I'm not saying everything is perfect as any country recovering from conflict will still have problems. But this is purely an internal matter of Sri lanka!Peace, bro!
@roshan2137 Ok u make a number of good points. Im not so much concerned about violence against Tamils because the situation for Tamils has greatly improved (due to international pressure). But violence against journalists and democratically minded people has only risen and Sri Lanka is anything but a 'vibrant democracy'. In fact I think its on its way to becoming a dictatorship. I don't believe any human rights issue is an 'internal matter'. It concerns all of humanity.
@1982mockingbird1982 Now in times of war,the government expects journalists to fall in line and if not trouble is on the way.Now I can't justify what they are doing but this is how govt.s react in conflict situations.Sri Lanka had its fair share of autocratic rulers but they were all toppled in elections. So we should allow the people to decide their own fate.Every country has its sovereignty and human rights should not be used selectively to punish smaller nations!
@roshan2137 I dont advocate for targeting smaller nations. I also want George Bush brought to trial and I want the Chinese Communist Party to be punished for its human rights violations before any other regime. And this particular autocratic ruler cant be toppled in an election because he uses violence and fraud to undermine the election process.
Your somehow under the illusion that things will get better. Maybe things will get better for the Tamils, but not for everyone else
@1982mockingbird1982 Things are better for other communities but not the Tamils. So it'll take time to get them back on their own feet. That is understandable because this is still a post war scenario.Election violence has been a reality in Sri Lanka since 1977.But govts were toppled. However, violence has dropped during the last 10 years. And Rajapaksa recently lost Colombo MC elections. So your argument is incorrect.Plus, the public admitted the 2010 Presidential elections were free & fair!
@1982mockingbird1982 You seem to be extremely pessimistic and dismissive about positive Sri Lankan developments.I advise you to visit Sri Lanka or volunteer to help Sri Lankans to get a better grasp of everything back home!
@1982mockingbird1982 Your attitude on US & China is welcoming. But one has to be realistic! One can't be dogmatic and want Bush & Hu Jintao and all of them hanged.....
@1982mockingbird1982 Hope u visit Sri Lanka and help us in any way u can. It's a beautiful place with warm, kind people.War should never have taken place there!
Channel Ten, we expected higher standards from you than badly researched tabloid trash journalism like this. In fact, this amounts to libel against our motherland. Expect a suitable response from the Sri Lankan community in Australia.
And do you guys seriously believe Channel 4's nonsensical interview with a heavily pixelated 'ex-Sri Lankan soldier' called, of all names, FERNANDO? You have got to be joking! Fernandos are a dime a dozen in Sri Lanka. If I sent you a video of myself speaking in a synthesized voice with my face blurred out, claiming I was an Australian soldier named Lachlan and that I saw my comrades killing Afghan civilians, would you believe it as readily as you believe Channel 4's bovine faecal matter here?
@SinhaHelaya An Australian, or western soldier wouldnt need to conceal his identity because he could freely speak out without being killed the next day. Thats why you hear Veterans Against The War and Wikileaks talk about war crimes all the time. The situation in Sri Lanka is..."different". Journalists like Prageeth and Lasantha can mysteriously disappear or even be shot in broad daylight just for critisizing the government. Incriminating the SL government would be suicide
@1982mockingbird1982 This "Fernando" isn't apparently in Sri Lanka, unless I'm mistaken. Why does he need to hide his identity then? And did you know that most of these journalists who "disappear" often reappear a few days later in overseas countries (preferably first world)? ;)
@SinhaHelaya It doesnt matter. "Fernando's" family and friends would still be in Sri Lanka, and I dont know where he is now, or whether he is 100% safe in his current location. If he is a UK citizen now he is safe, but if he is in India with a temporary Visa he isnt. So when and where did Prageeth Eknaligoda and Lasantha Wickrematunge reappear?
@1982mockingbird1982 You don't know about this Fernando because he most probably doesn't exist. I expected someone like you to be more critical of what the media dishes out, instead of blindly swallowing what they churn out. Or perhaps you're so eager to believe their lies because it's what you actually want to believe?
I'm not talking about those two, but quite a few lower profile journalists have been known to reappear magically in the west after being abducted by "govt death squads".
@SinhaHelaya It is laughable that you would be so supportive of your own countries media and accuse me of not being critical of the media. Im not even just relying on the media. There is also wealth of evidence from satellite photo's, political development and paper trails that incriminate SL and this is in spite of the fact that the Rajapaksa regime banned journalists from properly investigating the events. Your ignorance of these fact indicates it is you who have failed to scrutinize SL's media
@1982mockingbird1982 Where did I ever support my country's media? Sri Lankan media is arranged like this: half of it supports the govt unconditionally while the other half supports the opposition with the same vigour, thus they are all biased in one way or another. I only support my country.
I've seen the satellite photos too. Oddly enough, they didn't show any bodies. Political developments and paper trails are hardly incriminating evidence in a court of law, where you need absolute proof.
@SinhaHelaya Taken together, this evidence is incriminating enough for a trial. Firstly the satellite photos dont show bodies (they are satellite photo's). They show craters and other damage that appeared within a certain date range in no-fire zones and hospital areas that pruportedly could only have been caused by heavy shelling or cluster bombs originating from the SLA Army's position. The paper trails show us who had what weapons and.....
@1982mockingbird1982 I'm no lawyer, but I'm sure int'l law upholds the principle of "innocent until PROVEN guilty". For a war crimes trial, you'll need more credible proof than satellite photos and paper trails. We buy weapons from Israel, Russia, Ukraine along with China and even the UK and USA. Of course I have a pro-SL bias. It's my country, after all, and we don't appreciate foreigners meddling in our affairs. We've had enough of that over the centuries of colonization, thank you very much.
@1982mockingbird1982 Speaking of colonization, the Portuguese, Dutch and British faced their first battlefield defeats in Asia at the hands of the Sinhalese (unless I'm much mistaken). We still sing folk songs about the thrashings our ancestors gave yours, so you must understand where we're coming from: we're an intensely proud people and we always mind our own business unless provoked by the Cholas or European colonists.
@1982mockingbird1982 And here's a couple more names of "journalists" who were "abducted" by the govt, only to reappear magically in the west to escape prosecution for fraud, libel or worse: K. Rushangan and Kasun Yapa Karunaratne. These guys now have a comfortable life providing "evidence" against the land of their birth.
@1982mockingbird1982 About the shelling, did you expect the Army to just stand still while TERRORISTS (oops I hope that's not a dirty word for you) placed heavy weapons in the safe zone and fired at them and the civilians who were running away from the LTTE? Obviously a few civilians would have died in the crossfire, but that's nothing compared to the millions killed by NATO in their "wars of democracy."

Its unfeasible that the LTTE smuggled heavy weapons like this out of China but the paper trails prove that SL did purchase the weapons. Now Im no expert on war or physics but I have yet to hear the pro-SLA side dispute the allegations by disputing this evidence.
If u ONLY support your country then I have to suspect you have a pro-SL bias.
@1982mockingbird1982 Furthermore, this Channel Ten report unequivocally states that 40,000 civilians were killed. That is an outright lie which was made up by the Times of London the day after a UN move against Sri Lanka was defeated. The UN themselves say that 7000 civilians may have been killed, and they're not sure of that number either. The LTTE themselves said they had 300,000 civilians with them, and the headcount of civilians in the camps after the war was in fact 312k. Where's that 40k?
@SinhaHelaya I doubt it was $40,000. It could have been anywhere between 20,000 to 130,000 but we will never know because your governement did not allow NGO's or journalists in to key locations at critical times during the conflict. And name 3 journalists who have "reappeared in the West"?
@1982mockingbird1982 So tell me where this 20k-130k dead civilians came from, when the LTTE themselves said they had 300k with them and a post-war census of the refugee camps revealed 312k civilians ALIVE?
Here you go, here are the names of 3 such journalists who did a Houdini: Manjula Wediwardhana, Athula Vithanage, Sanath Balasuriya. Feel free to Google these names. These fellows aren't even true journalists but criminals who fled abroad to escape prosecution for tax evasion, fraud, etc.
@SinhaHelaya The post war census is unreliable unless it was taken by a reasonably independent source that isn't controlled by the SL government. A number of NGO's kept records of the civilians in the Vaani region so if they were allowed to go back and complete their own census, without any foul play, this could confirm that the SL governments census is truthfull and accurate.
@1982mockingbird1982 There's one young lawyer who's pretty famous in Sri Lanka, now living in Germany. Here's a newspaper extract about his case:
"An ambitious young Sri Lankan lawyer had involved himself in a scam where he made fake deeds for lands that belonged to other people and sold them to unsuspecting buyers. The fraud prevention bureau was able to discover this racket. The culprit, the young lawyer fled to the UK evading arrest."
@1982mockingbird1982 Contd...". He found a way to avoid the risk of being deported by the UK government in the event he was found guilty for this grievous offence commited while he was in Sri Lanka. All that he did was to set up a website in his name and run a malicious campaign against the government. Slowly he became a leading proponent of the political campaign against the Rajapaksa regime operating from London. In the process, he was able to build a reputation among the opposition groups."
@1982mockingbird1982 Contd...". Now he does not mind the outcome of the court case that was being pursued against him in Sri Lanka. If found guilty of the case, he could interpret it as a politically motivated prosecution designed to take revenge and appeal for political asylum in the UK. The Sunday Times carried an article by Iqbal Atthas on the court case on the land fraud against this young lawyer."
@1982mockingbird1982 The Sunday Times mentioned here is a private Sri Lankan newspaper that has some semblance of neutrality, though they often take the opposition's side. Feel free to Google all this information so you can confirm all this for yourself.
What kind of bullcrap gutter journalism is this? The UN never said 40,00 Tamil civilians were killed, they estimated that 7000 may have died. This fairytale figure of 40,000 was cooked up by the Times of London on the very day after a move on Sri Lanka at the UN in 2009 flopped.
It's failed, move the fuck on. 60 - 70% of tamils live in the capital of Sri Lanka Colombo, I've been there, it's a fantastic place.
