Hi Truecrypt, thanks for posting all these early recordings. It's a great resource. Would be great, though, if you could add the rec. date or year (approximately).
One of the best Godowsky recordings (together with the first transcription from Winterreise). The sound is incredible,on par with Rosenthal and Hofmann.
Besides Godowsky, Liszt, Rachmaninoff and lesser composers made arrangements of Schubert Lied. It was a very common 19th century tradition. These are usually not transcriptions but sometimes free arrangements. Complaining about not having a singer here is like complaining about no orchestra accompanying a piano reduction of a symphony.
I think of the best Schubert Lied arrangements (such as those by Liszt) as one great composer commenting on another.
aewanko.........I agree but, as a concert piano technician friend of Earl Wild and others, I must add that even in this avg sonic recording, you hear the incredible depth of tone that Godowsky makes which carries through. This is playing of an era rapidly fading from memory. Earl is no longer playing and so few play in this manner. What a loss.......but so glad to hear this for posterity........
Hofmann always felt sory for Godowsky, saying that he never played so well as when in front of a few intimates at home.Maybe this gorgeously intimate expression is an exception.I love it.
Together with the other Schubert transcription ("Gute Nacht") and Grieg's Ballade IMO the most beautiful recording of Godowsky. Here he was completely comfortable without holding back and very expressive.
Greatest of all. This is completely another level.

Finally get to hear Godowsky play and phrase two melodic lines going on at the same time (beginning sometime after 1:00).
And listen to him point out the form at various vital points in the piece.

Studying piano is what I do, I'm not too good at anything else.

A very expressive performance, but, given the restrictions of recording 78s, naturally it is extremely carefully played.
