MPG is usually the same or less since you are carrying the extra weight of the vegetable oil tank but because it is augmenting the mileage you can travel without fueling up again and waist vegetable oil is typically free; the over all cost to drive further is less.
Be warned: This can be considered tax evasion. Sucks, I know, but its true. In some areas you can get away with using straight vegetable oil, but if you use biodiesel you won't be able to avoid trouble if the wrong people find out.
I tell you what...I'll personally contact both my state and the IRS and tell them what I'm doing, if they can prove it, they can suck my balls. I think there isn't a jury who would convict someone for shooting the tax man if he comes to your house to bust balls over trying to save money on fuel.
That law only applies if you're producing on a commercial level. I think the limit is 500 gallons a year, but who's keeping track?
I haven't researched it in a while, but I base that info on some research I did a few years back with regard to producing alcohol as a fuel. I remember there were some credits for alternative fuels and a limit to how much could be produced before it was considered commercial 500gal. I know the difference is alcohol/vegioil but it may still apply since they are not fossil fuels. My point still remains that if you have that kind of friends or asshole officials, it's time to start hanging them.
The simple thing is you have to be approved to produce your own fuel, but its only an issue if you want to produce biodiesel, which is classified as a fuel. Straight-on vegetable oil is NOT classified as a fuel and is therefore is NOT taxed(attempts at prosecution for use of vegetable oil have consistently failed). What's more, legal approval may include a tax exemption in some areas. But even without an exemption, its still cheaper to ONLY pay the taxes than to buy commercial fuels.
If you mix Biodiesel with regular diesel fuel, it is classified as an additive not fuel but the methanol used in manufacturing Biodiesel is a fuel and was taxed when you bought that to make the Biodiesel so running it as straight fuel means you already paid the tax but if you sell it then there is sales tax tacked on.
As for the quantity of Methanol or any other fuel that you can produce and or store; it is up to town ordnances and zoning residential might be limited very limited where commercial property may allow large storage and require spill and fire safety precautions in place.
First: this is not biodiesel, this is vegetable oil which requires mods.
Second: You should run biodiesel not veg oil in higher rmp diesels like vw. Injection system wasn't made for such a thick viscosity. Old MB and trucks are better for veggie.
Third: Biodiesel and veggie oil decrease power and mpg but they increase lubrication and better for the environment.
That is wvo conversion, any diesel can run biodiesel without that conversion. Both of my cars run B99 without conversion since Sept.2010

No. I'm just the kind of guy who prefers to make sure people don't get in trouble because of simple oversights like that.

Sorry to say, but you're wrong. The fuel tax is NOT a sales tax.
