It's very hard to say what species of prey this is. It's small and black, so probably a blackbird, or maybe a starling. We now have over 50 prey species recorded in Derby - from swift to ruddy duck.
Yes - as I said in the description, both chicks eventually fed perfectly well and grew up to fly over the skies of Derby city before leaving home in the autumn.
SO SAD, yet very interesting how the chick finally turned its back as if it had reached some desperate state of independence, and now was in search of its own solution.
It's an example of a mother giving all her resources to one offspring instead of sharing between two in order to maximise her fitness- this way, she will gain more grandchildren should the one offspring she has given all her resources to survive.
