Don't you Jimi vs Frank guys know the story?! Frank had a dream and was visited by the ghost of Hendrix, told him Carry On Man. So he did. Sometime after that, I was visited by the ghost of Frank, told me Carry On Dude. And I did, and I sucked. Then I found out, Frank was still alive ...
@sisco249 Yeah and Hendrix wasn't even fully black asshole. If you knew ANYTHING of Jimi, his maternal grandmother was full blooded Cherokee and he lived with her much of his childhood. In fact Jimi kept many relics of his heritage with him at all times, INCLUDING his '67 Gibson Flying V. Ever noticed the pearl inlay? It's not dot, trapezoid, block or,paralleogram like most Gibsons, it's split ARROWHEADS! He specifically demanded that. He kept a cattleskull his grandmother gave him until death.
Frank is vastly superior to anything Hendrix ever did, I am not taking away from Jimi for what he did do , I'm saying Frank improved on the sound by many degrees , Plus Frank adds jazz lines to a lot of his songs which is unique when doing it in a rock structure. For Jimi, give the devil his due , For Frank , give him his due also , he is one step beyond Hendrix. Thats not a bad thing or a slur , its a fact
in my opinion hendrix, page, and clapton are the best guitarists ever. frank marino led the next pack of guys right behind them and nobody could touch him.

@TheGunslinger5854 Although i fully agree with you, just thought i'd be a dick and say that since Hendrix was afraid of needles im fairly sure he never took heroin
@thatloser88 I didn't say he shot heroin but they surely smoked plenty of it. And he was known to ingest quantities of speed as well. One of the main reasons he was always chewing gum when playing. There have been so many guitar players trying to emulate Jimi, but as far as I know all of them have done so only for Jimi's rock side. His blues side is a more profound aspect of his music, which brings about subtlety, sensitivity, nuance and groove. Frank Marino is no exception. Mahogany Rush......yeah right; sounds quite rushed. If you think he is as good as Jimi, you still got a looooong way to go.
1950jimbei...just remember...Frank isn't playing Jimi's song...he's playing his interpretation of BOB DYLAN'S song. Each musican is different with their own style. I personally prefer Hendrix' and Masons' versions...but to each his own.
You're triply wrong. First, my comment wasn't about this particular song. Second, he's playing Jimi's version of the song. Marino wouldn't (or couldn't) have conceived covering this song without Jimi. Third, "Each musican is different with their own style." True, but not entirely. Add this: Each musician is different at their own level. I know there are lot's of people who seriously think JK Rowling is as great as Hemingway. You think George Thorogood is as good as Hound Dog Taylor?
Sorry dude, but you're way off base. First, you said "Mahogany Rush......yeah right; sounds quite rushed", so you were commenting on the song. Second, he was playing his "version" of Jimi's interpretation of this song. Couldn't have conceived of covering this song?..by that logic Jimi wouldn't have conceived of covering it either. Third, that's bs about "at their own level". Everyone has their own style. And yes Thorogood is as good as Hound Dog Taylor...in his own style.
*First, you said "Mahogany Rush.....yeah right; sounds quite rushed", so you were commenting on the song.* There's no logic in this. Referring to an example is in no way the subject matter itself. Read my original comment again. *Second, he was playing his "version" of Jimi's interpretation of this song. Couldn't have conceived of covering this song?..by that logic Jimi wouldn't have conceived of covering it either.* Sounds gibberish to me; I have to ask you to explain the logic you used here.
IDK what you guys are on about, but to me he is just playing Jimi's version of Bob's song.
he's not "re interpreting", he's just playing what Jimi already did, down to the details. you can tell Frank studied a lot of Jim's live work, as I know I have.
I mean, that explains why he is playing exclusively Hendrix licks here.
*Everyone has their own style.* Who do you mean by everyone? It implies anyone who plays music. *And yes Thorogood is as good as Hound Dog Taylor...in his own style.* You'd say JK Rowling is as great as Hemingway in her own style. Right? You sure need to raise your level of artistic appreciation as well as logical discourse. You should know listeners have different levels just like players.
"It overwhelmed me, really. He had such talent, he could find things inside a song and vigorously develop them. He found things that other people wouldn't think of finding in there. He probably improved upon it by the spaces he was using. I took license with the song from his version, actually, and continue to do it to this day." Guess who said this. Do I need to continue?
Nice Wiki job. Fact stands...if Dylan had not written the song Hendrix would not have covered it...period. Dylan is a poet, writer, composer...so is Hendrix. Each has a unique gift (or had, in Jimi's case). Hendrix would never have composed "Watchtower" as Dylan never would have composed "Purple Haze". Each different, each talented, each with a different style.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It's a well-know fact that Dylan was deeply impressed by Jimi's version of Watchtower and openly says he's been playing Jimi's version. *Dylan is a poet, writer, composer...so is Hendrix. Each has a unique gift (or had, in Jimi's case).* And where's Frank Marino? See, you inadvertently admitted Marino is not in the same league as Dylan or Hendrix.
Who would cover a song/tune which does not impress him/her unless they are just puppets of their record companies
/producers? How they reinterpret and perform pieces written by others shows their musicianship. Don't bother me (or others for that matter) with this kinda stupid question again.
"All Along the Watchtower" is a song written and recorded by singer-songwriter Bob Dylan. It initially appeared on his album John Wesley Harding. It has been covered by other artists in different genres, most notably by the Jimi Hendrix Experience."
I seem to always keep playin this vid from time to time, it's classic Frank Marino... Seen him live when I was 16 which was total kickass concert... The man knew how to put on a guitar show and to this day still does; he's not as animated as when he was younger but who is?!? Knows his work and fears GOD; listen to his versatile sound and read up on his belief... His intelligence is astounding... cheers, kooler
I got to see Frank about 40 years ago when I was in high School. One of my buddies told me about him. I had never heard of him. We saw him at the Triangle Theatre in Rochester, Ny there was a few hundred people there tops. He completely fried my brain. I immediately bought the live album and played that live LP until I erased the grooves...Simply awesome..
he's as good as a great Elvis immitator or any of the other artists making a living giving fans out there a taste of what they grew up with. You might enjoy his playing and I do too because he plays music from the allmighty Hendrix. I would like to hear Frank play something he wrote with a nice solo in his own style. Imiitators can earn a living and have a good following but their legacy is short lived.
You never hear anyone say "hey I play in the Frank Marino style".
A lot of folks point out Frank's guitar work. And, he was great, no doubt, definitely inspired by Hendrix. But his voice was a perfect match for his guitar work: gritty like Pat Travers and Johnny Winter. I wish I had that kind of voice.
He is one of the best guitar players of all times. He is very fluent and has a great stage presents. His melodic licks transcend into his soul and he plays like a machine. He is ranked amongst some of the very best of musicians like Eddie Van Halen, Zak,Vinnie Moore, Johnny Winter, Jimmy Hendrix, Joe Satr ect...
Jimi Said he'd be back with a new way to play rock and roll Frank just let it out for everybody! I've noticed alot of his riffs ripped u no?! Their all Great! But Frank was/is There. Where are You now Dude! Tour Man Come Back! Please!!?
Frank put on a fantastic show last night in Dallas - over 3 hours non stop ! This man is a truly gifted guitar player. If Hendrix were here today I think he would welcome Frank on stage with him.
i saw him last year in the cleveland house of blues he is a legend.i only wish he would come to columbus oh.by the way he was 15 and out rockin all of them.
does anyone know about a concert i seen 70s was ted nuggent vs frank marino at masonic temple in detroit it was a great show they traded licks to see who was better nuggent won by applause
I saw him in 1983 in Detroit, Will never forget the end of the show Lights go out..silence... then some sonic noise melted my brain ...I could not hear a thing for at least 45 min afterwords ,anyone know what the heck that sonic thing was?
I can only imagine, brother! I wish I could have seen him back then. I can only guess it was Electric Reflections of War, or Mona. Frank can kick ass like no other!! He's not a Hendrix copy, for he can ride that rock/blues magic like no other!
Mr. Marino is playing the studio version of watchtower world. His pick up guitarist is needed. If he played live by himself then you`d really think he was copying Hendrix. Anyway doesn`t his pick up guitarist. Need to earn his bread.$
This song is off of "The Tales of the Unexpected" LP the 83 version here on U TUBE is even better if you can believe it!!!! The 1st song on the Lp "Sister Change" is also a badd ass song!!! "Whats Next" has many Great songs on it but my fave is "Somethings Coming Our Way you can find it here on U TUBE. Please tell everyone you know about FRANK he realy deserves the recognition........
Frank performed this song awesome, Hail all the canadian Guitarists, Alex Lifeson and Rik Emmett as well. Steve Morse said-"there must be some in the canadian water" True. And, Marino is no Hendrix cover. Jimi was a uniqe player, but Marino is Marino.....you know
Pat Travers, Jeff Healey, David Wilcox, Gino Scarpelli, Randy Bachman, & even Gordon Lightfoot, Neil Young, Liona Boyd, Mick Mars & many, many more!...Frank Marino is just amazing. Like your countryman Uli Jon Roth,& Englishman Robin Trower, Frank got labelled with the "Hendrix" clone/disciple tag by the critics & it always became a bit of an impediment to his art. There was so much more to all of their playing. Frank is so good live, it's a shame there aren't more quality Videos of his concerts.
Frank's the greatest! I wish I could have seen Mahogany Rush back in the day, but I have seen them over the last three years and it has been more than worth the wait!
Yes it has been worth the wait! I saw his show in Dallas, TX in '06 and it was amazing. He is back out on the road again in '08! Hope he comes back to Dallas again! Frank Rules! Eddie Van Halen is overrated!
LMFAO@ Van Halen who!!!! This song is on a Mahogany Rush LP called "What's Next", circa 77-78. I used to have the cassette. The cover is of a HOT ROD with it's hood up, being worked on. Great album, too!
wow thanks for sending me that railroad don, i saw him in windsor ontario in 74 at st. clair college, he floored me, me and howard were just talkin about him. unbelievable, great job.
in the late 70ies I went in a record shop and found an album named F.Marino + Mahogany Rush. I still remember, it was a black album with red letters - I listened to it by headphones and got really exited! 30 years later I still like his guitar riffs.
I saw Frank Marino I think in 2006 in Mobile, Alabama and he was amazing. I had never heard of him before the show. After it was over I was speechless. I got to meet him afterwards and I just didn't know what to say. He was so good and I was completely blown away. I just told him that he was the greatest guitar player that I've ever seen and to please come bacl on his next tour.
Great to know he's touring. Check out his song Tales Of The Unexpected from the album of the same name. He does a jazzy solo that'll knock your socks off!
I saw Frank Morino in early 70,s he kicked ass at THE ARAGON in Chicago Thanks for the music Frank Morino Jimi would have love to jam with him. Thanks for the post.
What to say about this?Frank is on top, this version of Dylans All along sounds much like Hendrix on Electric ladyland.I got hooked on Marino for ca 25 years ago and I still like hear him playing
Hey pshell44 I was at the same show at Giants stadium. Frank went on about 11 am not to mention he was 1st on the bill. Remember the rain and lightening during Nugents set? Frank owned all of them that day.
hey LEDNAREFF! thanx a million for this! another 5 stars for FRANK! can`t get enough- great to see jems like this- posted! always remember to- ROCK ON!! russ.

His blues side is a more profound aspect of his music, which brings about subtlety, sensitivity, nuance and groove. Frank Marino is no exception. Mahogany Rush......yeah right; sounds quite rushed. If you think he is as good as Jimi, you still got a looooong way to go.
1950jimbei 2 years ago
youre right no one can play it like jimi but frank does it justice
rafomagus 2 years ago 2
1950jimbei...just remember...Frank isn't playing Jimi's song...he's playing his interpretation of BOB DYLAN'S song. Each musican is different with their own style. I personally prefer Hendrix' and Masons' versions...but to each his own.
nsbear1 2 years ago
You're triply wrong. First, my comment wasn't about this particular song. Second, he's playing Jimi's version of the song. Marino wouldn't (or couldn't) have conceived covering this song without Jimi. Third, "Each musican is different with their own style." True, but not entirely. Add this: Each musician is different at their own level. I know there are lot's of people who seriously think JK Rowling is as great as Hemingway. You think George Thorogood is as good as Hound Dog Taylor?
1950jimbei 2 years ago
Sorry dude, but you're way off base. First, you said "Mahogany Rush......yeah right; sounds quite rushed", so you were commenting on the song. Second, he was playing his "version" of Jimi's interpretation of this song. Couldn't have conceived of covering this song?..by that logic Jimi wouldn't have conceived of covering it either. Third, that's bs about "at their own level". Everyone has their own style. And yes Thorogood is as good as Hound Dog Taylor...in his own style.
nsbear1 2 years ago
*First, you said "Mahogany Rush.....yeah right; sounds quite rushed", so you were commenting on the song.* There's no logic in this. Referring to an example is in no way the subject matter itself. Read my original comment again. *Second, he was playing his "version" of Jimi's interpretation of this song. Couldn't have conceived of covering this song?..by that logic Jimi wouldn't have conceived of covering it either.* Sounds gibberish to me; I have to ask you to explain the logic you used here.
1950jimbei 2 years ago
IDK what you guys are on about, but to me he is just playing Jimi's version of Bob's song.
he's not "re interpreting", he's just playing what Jimi already did, down to the details. you can tell Frank studied a lot of Jim's live work, as I know I have.
I mean, that explains why he is playing exclusively Hendrix licks here.
mytube1349 2 years ago
*Everyone has their own style.* Who do you mean by everyone? It implies anyone who plays music. *And yes Thorogood is as good as Hound Dog Taylor...in his own style.* You'd say JK Rowling is as great as Hemingway in her own style. Right? You sure need to raise your level of artistic appreciation as well as logical discourse. You should know listeners have different levels just like players.
1950jimbei 2 years ago
"It overwhelmed me, really. He had such talent, he could find things inside a song and vigorously develop them. He found things that other people wouldn't think of finding in there. He probably improved upon it by the spaces he was using. I took license with the song from his version, actually, and continue to do it to this day." Guess who said this. Do I need to continue?
1950jimbei 2 years ago
Nice Wiki job. Fact stands...if Dylan had not written the song Hendrix would not have covered it...period. Dylan is a poet, writer, composer...so is Hendrix. Each has a unique gift (or had, in Jimi's case). Hendrix would never have composed "Watchtower" as Dylan never would have composed "Purple Haze". Each different, each talented, each with a different style.

1950jimbei 2 years ago
WRONG
Jimi was impressed by Dylan's song and Jimi covered it.
NearlyAMusician 2 years ago
Who would cover a song/tune which does not impress him/her unless they are just puppets of their record companies
/producers? How they reinterpret and perform pieces written by others shows their musicianship. Don't bother me (or others for that matter) with this kinda stupid question again.
1950jimbei 2 years ago
Reply to the right post. And you're ignoring the fact that Bob Dylan wrote it. It's a well known fact.
NearlyAMusician 2 years ago
Yes read the whole thing on wikipedia

@oukkla
he's as good as a great Elvis immitator or any of the other artists making a living giving fans out there a taste of what they grew up with. You might enjoy his playing and I do too because he plays music from the allmighty Hendrix. I would like to hear Frank play something he wrote with a nice solo in his own style. Imiitators can earn a living and have a good following but their legacy is short lived.
You never hear anyone say "hey I play in the Frank Marino style".
mancini54 1 year ago
A lot of folks point out Frank's guitar work. And, he was great, no doubt, definitely inspired by Hendrix. But his voice was a perfect match for his guitar work: gritty like Pat Travers and Johnny Winter. I wish I had that kind of voice.

Frank Marino
He is one of the best guitar players of all times. He is very fluent and has a great stage presents. His melodic licks transcend into his soul and he plays like a machine. He is ranked amongst some of the very best of musicians like Eddie Van Halen, Zak,Vinnie Moore, Johnny Winter, Jimmy Hendrix, Joe Satr ect...

I can only imagine, brother! I wish I could have seen him back then. I can only guess it was Electric Reflections of War, or Mona. Frank can kick ass like no other!! He's not a Hendrix copy, for he can ride that rock/blues magic like no other!
dieselboy64 3 years ago
Mr. Marino is playing the studio version of watchtower world. His pick up guitarist is needed. If he played live by himself then you`d really think he was copying Hendrix. Anyway doesn`t his pick up guitarist. Need to earn his bread.$

Frank is so good live, it's a shame there aren't more quality Videos of his concerts.

in the late 70ies I went in a record shop and found an album named F.Marino + Mahogany Rush.
