It's so neat to see this thing actually doing some work, go baby go!! Yea things operated a little less safe back then, it was before idiot proofing. It's neat to see who much work that thing can still produce, and how inertia was so important. Great video, I really enjoyed watching it.
@TheRealSergentSiler Mainly because that was the only technology available at the time. Solid fuel injection was a few years off-once fuel injection was perfected, Diesels really took off (around the mid 30's).
@TheRealSergentSiler hmmm your stupid that was high technology a long time ago with the creation of these what you seem to think is crappy engines we wouldnt be where we are now DUH!
I can only imagine what a treat this must have been for those elderly gentlemen who probably remember when their dad or granddad actually used equipment like this to make a living. Seeing these old beasts running and being used in the demonstrations is really like breathing life back to the past! Reminds me of when I got my hand stuck in the "rollers" of my Mom's washing machine!
I think it is a valve that let out some compression before the engine is hot enough to run good.
This engines don't have sparkplugs. It is a bulb at the top that must be preheated (blowtorch) before you can start. Then when the engine have run for a while the bulb get hot of the compression.
how do you get involved in these events. I am studying to become a mechanical engineer and this seems like it would be alot of fun to watch. Is there any events similar to this in the charlotte area?

some how the Americans always love Dirty smokey engines that have low horse power and just blow smoke.. I love the UK and Euro Old type engines that ran on Oli,Diesel and Steam .. Also i Love the our Australian Steam and Diesel Engines way back they dont ever break down Like the usa made and there less anoying to listen also cleaner !!
I agree!! If it wasn't for my grandfather taking me to events like this one and steam traction rallies, I may not have been so determined at becoming an engineer. Now I'm a Chief ;)
rustyknutt: at least jetdog is trying to learn something of which he currently knows nothing about; that's smart. Whadda YOU got besides insults for people you've never met coming from your own feelings of inadequacy? Don't hammer the guy; he's trying to learn.
I love the two at the end.. the saw and the splitter. I bet the splitter uses less fuel than one of these new hydraulic ones. I know it is faster than one i have used many times. Please, more info on the show. Is it every year or was this just once? I'm in Norway but don't mind a drive for something like this.
OK, that makes sense. Still it doesn't look like the axe sticks out very far, from the notch in the table but maybe it simply doesn't need to. Wouldn't mind having one to play with ! Gotta get my cutoff saw for my Allis Chalmers model G in operation ! Thanks
Of course I don't think that! But a couple puffs a second is better than whats an 18 wheeler idle at? 3k RPM? V8's and V10's usually? that would be... firing 25 times a second? as compared to 3 or 4?
You should learn more about diesel engines before criticizing them. Those old engines are horribly inefficient compared to modern designs. Current diesel engines pollute less then gasoline engines and are more efficient.
I will admit that but these (When running in good nick atleast.) tend to put out a lot less in the same amount of time that newer engines do. Also i'm sorry but I'm asthmatic and have been the victem of a bigass deisel truck spewing a cloud of black smoke when the driver stepped on it to get up a hill... Was a new chevy too.
Great vid... I'm amazed old engines like these arent still in use instead of those polluting diesel buggers around now... These are far more reliable as they have to be about a century old rusted a bit and they still do thier job on command and well... great vid!
Some of those old engines will overspeed upon startup; that's why it was jumping around like that. i like the engine-driven wood splitter in in the last part of the video.
back 100 years ago they didn't have electric everything. it ran off on kerosene, diesel .
They could put drive belts on it for anything, processing grain, water pump, some kind of saw.

OSHA didn't exist when all of that stuff was made, lol. People then used common sense, hmm don't put hands in too far they might get cut off.

The OSHA safety guy cracks me up lol.
Soothsayerman 4 years ago
Jeez, Louise - An OSHA nightmare, for certain! Also, I'm guessing you need to be feeding seasoned wood to this thing.
I can't believe the guy feeding it isn't even wearing gloves. Seems to me that an unsuccessful split could generate quite a kick.
wires99 4 years ago
So what? I'll promise you if he gets his hand in there it doesn't matter if he has gloves on or not!

wrf121 4 years ago
It´s a rotating "knife" inside the house.
Jobergg 4 years ago
I watched it again, still don't get it, would love to see it turned slowly, by hand. Obviously an OSHA nightmare ! ha Thanks
wrf121 4 years ago
Well, seems that the Beijers Vimmerby oil engine just about wanted to destroy the trailer upon statup.

Still, once started, they are nice engines. :)

Great video, I wish I could afford to restore old engines like that and keep them running.
Dragonatheart195 4 years ago
The description says it's a petroleum engine...actually I doubt it would run on crude oil very long; it would plug up the pump and the spray nozzle.
douro20 4 years ago
