Yup... I think this explanation is flawed... Force is not equal to power !! Force * speed = power. There is no energy lost by the crank force being smaller than the Piston force, because it is only a mechanical translation i.e. what we loose in force we gain in speed. Or better the other way round (constant crank speed) the energy from the compression in the Cylinder is just not translated at a constant rate to mecahnical energy, which doesn't mean that energy is lost.
