Oathaniel, quite possibly not--but then, I suspect another person's senseless death, rather than Matthew's, would have been the catalyst for change.
To the best of my knowledge, there has not been a lot of hatred, fear, discrimination, religious fervor, brutal murders, and denial of civil rights for those who support a given soccer team.
You are so correct; the story about a month or ago was from NY. A guy walking down the street was beat to death because he was holding hands with another guy. The other guy I think was his brother. Totally messed up.
There is a movie about Matthew. And everyone should see the play if they have a chance called The Laramie Project which I think is the title of the movie. It also shows when haters go wild, good people, straight and gay, can come together to make this a better world.
Good video :) I love that there is a young, intelligent voice out there who has such passionate views. And also, your skin seems to be clearing up; looks really nice :)
Of all the many Gay Bashing Murders I have known about throughout my life, none was quite as horrific and bone chilling as the Matthew Shepard murder. It absolutely saddens me beyond description. The rogue "cowboys" that lured him out of the club pretending they were Gay were cowards and BRUTAL. His skull was cracked open as he WAS TIED TO THE FENSE and that was only a small part of the brutality. Can you imagine how afraid he was? The pain? He was a loving young man with everything to live for.
I'm surprised it took this long, though I guess the whole "it's a choice" debate slowed it down. Apparently Matthew Shepard had a more questionable past than we'd like him to have had, but the passing of the act is still good.
Matthew Shepard's story is really sad. My friend did a project about him and presented it to our english class and it shut a lot of kids up, which was good. Because I know i've been insulted before by some of the kids in there because i'm gay. Anyways, Thanks for the video. :D
I can add you on facebook in three weeks, because then I'll be out of the closet. As for the description of that hate crime and hate crimes in general, it really perplexes me that people can be so cruel over reasons so frivelous as sexuality. But I'd like to think that the world is somewhat progressive.
I support this act, Nick. However an attorney I work with says that it would be difficult to enforce. The belief that a crime is a crime whether motivated by hate or not is a problem. Again, I support the act, but many legal folks do not because of the legal problems with enforcement.
oh the laramie project story... i only know the jist of it... basically what you explained. i wish i could be in that play though! theatre just brings all the gays together! :)
when the hate crime petition was going around on the internte, I signed it and called my state senetors and congressmen. They all said they would vote for it. But my congressman (A Republican) lied to me and voted against it. But my 2 Senators (Democrats) voted for it. I dont see why anyone would vote against it.
The Matthew Shepard story really is horrible. I wrote a research paper on gay teens and homophobia, and his story was my into. Needless to say, I did quite a bit of research on it.
It would depend on the town. Dont go by state. There are some towns in NY that are fabulous with gayness, but others that are horrible. Its the same in every state. Some towns are better than others.
Disclaimer: I'm not saying that every state has a gay-friendly area. Just that it varies by town much more accurately than by state.
I acted in our local community theater production of The Laramie Project, a play written by Moises Kaufman which examines the crime, the murderers and the town in which they grew up.
Appearing in this play has been one of the most important things I have done with my life. We now have a local PFLAG chapter specifically because of it..
Funny thing: Most residents of Laramie, when asked about the crime, said, basically, "We believe in live and let live."
Nick, the House passed it before the Senate did (the House passage was actually the biggest hurdle). So now it's just up to Obama to sign it. It's a major victory because we've been working for over a decade to get this bill passed, and it looks like it finally will, despite the best (worst) efforts of the political right who've spent years and tons of money spreading lies and propoganda about it.
I hope that it covers hate crimes carried out by the police - such as the attack on a gay bar in Texas designed to mark the 40th anniversary of Stonewall.

Corrections: The House has already passed the act. Now the conferees much reconcile the two versions into one bill. Then it goes to the president.
Matt was a student of the University of Wyoming. There is no Wyoming State University.
I'd mention Sean William Kennedy in South Carolina as a prime reason for this bill! His murderer served TWO YEARS!
Matt is one of my heroes, which I have on some of the pages of my site.

Would it have made any difference if they killed Matthew Shepard because he liked the wrong soccer team?
