I think that the chinese riding in after the detonation is part of a stun and smash manuver, plus, if they were riding in like that, it was probably a tactical nuclear warhead, under 5 kilotons most likely, but then again, there government just doesn't care. They probably dindn't get significantly irradiated, theres somethin called the mean lethal dose, and as long as you stay under a certain amount of rads an hour, you should be fine, DNA is pretty resistant, but excess will do somethin.

Yes, radiation is not a good thing, but those chinese riding into ground zero i don't think had to really worry about the radiation dose they were getting, They were wearing gas masks, but, it is the chinese government, so wether the gas masks actually had filters or just empty cans on them is another matter entirely. I definitely believe that the radiation from Hiroshima and nagasaki killed more people than the blast though. They didn't really move away, so they were always exposed.

Since my last post I have actually done some further research into Hiroshima and Nagasaki and it turns out the casualties were partially exaggerated. Half did not die from radiation that accounted for a fraction of the casualties.

The US nuclear testing revealed that an airburst nuclear explosion (like the ones over Japan) left far less fallout radiation than with a surface burst (see Castle Bravo fallout). It is complex how that works but those soldiers probably wouldn't even need gas masks.
