I am so frustrated, No matter how many times I watch this and do exactly what it says, I always end up getting more stitches when Im' done with a row. I also tried to do this with purl stitching instead, and then with that I end up getting less stitches when I'm done with a row. What the heck am I doing wrong? Also, your knitting is too fast for me. Frustrating
I did the same thing on my first row. What I did by mistake was to bring the yarn over just before the last stitch. She doesn't clearly say not to bring it over before the last, but if you watch closely, she doesn't bring it over. Hope that helps!
Hi Judy, I love this pattern, Thank You so much for sharing, but I do have a questions, for some reason the corners on my work are curling, what am I doing wrong? Thank You so much for your videos.
Hi Judy, Thanks for uploading this, and all your videos. I just started knitting and I started with a gathered scarf, I got 1/4 of the way through it and then decided to do something simpler, and this is awesome! Thanks! A lot of your videos have helped me, I will continue to watch your videos :)
Hi Judy I asked a question on your channel and didnt get an answer yet. I hope you are not ill. I love your videos they are so informative. My question was for this video and the varriations you have do you bind off purlwise or knitwise? I have a 48in scarf for a teen that I did in this stitch and dont know which way to bind off. Please respond when you can. If you are ill get well soon and keep posting videos I love them. Thank you!
Thanks for the insight. I just happen to be working on a afghan pattern, Elfin something, and it has these very same stitches within the pattern. I like the way you do your YO while the right needle is still in the stiches of the left needle for the K2tog st. These are the things that I gain here that I wish I could get by sitting around with my (long gone) Auntie Helen who was an awesome knitter (born around 1915). Thanks again.
I love this but I am getting crossed strands between my stitches. Yours looks like a single strand. Am I doing it right? Thanks for taking time to reply.
It seems that you are *not* putting the right hand needle under the two knit stitches by putting the right hand needle *against* the left hand needle under the stitches...When I k2tog, I put the point of the right hand needle against the left hand needle under the two stitches----are you doing it *differently*? Sorry to be so dense...
Hi I am a beginner. can you possibly do the whole row in slow motion and closer so I can see exactly what a yarn over is? I can do the knit stitch and barely can do the perl stitch. thanks in advance if this is possible
just keep watching and you'll see what I'm doing. Also, you can watch some of my other videos that use Yarn Over. Look for them on my channel. This pattern is only knits and yarn over and knit 2 together so you don;t need to purl. Please don't give up. You'll be so proud when you have learned it.
I thought your scarf would be great to knit..however the way you knit is totally NOT the way I knit..is there anyway you could explain it the NORMAL way!
I don't know what you mean by Normal. There are many ways to knit. We usually find the one that's best for us. The way I knit is the way I learned and have been doing for years. However you knit it's just K1,* YO, K2tog and repeat ending with K1. Every row is the same.
@RandomGoth1000 I was a little confused at first too, but if you watch closely, when she says, "yarn over," she adds an extra loop. Nothing special, just loop the yarn around your need in your right hand before you slip it off from the cross position. So, you ALWAYS have the exact same amount that you started with. Good luck!
@RandomGoth1000 knitting two together does decrease but as shown in the video, she knits two together, then does a YO (Yarn over) which creates a stitch, so you are decreasing by on with the knit two together and adding one by the YO so you end up with the same amount of stitches
Judy, I think it may be confusing to beginning knitters when you YO in preparation for the next k2tog prior to slipping the currently worked stitches off your needle. Just a thought. Also, I have a question about your last k stitch. Are you knitting into the front or back of the stitch. From here, it looks like a ktb st. Yet, you say to k that stitch.
sorry if you found the YO confusing. That's just how I do it. I am knitting into the back of the last stitch. I always do that too. Thanks for writing, please keep watching and look for me on facebook too.
@knittingtipsbyjudy Nothing to be sorry about. Thank you for the clarification. I found your video helpful. My question was based on the comments of your other viewers and their concerns as well as the verbal directions didn't quite match up with the visual on that last stitch. Maybe you can better explain the first slip stitch and the last knit to the back stitch for the newer knitters in your audience?
I get confused on the first stitch you slip. Do you actually knit the first stitch or do you just slip iit knitwise? It looks beautiful but I am confused on that first stitch. Thanks for the videos. '
I was having the same problem as the first lady and that was seeing how you
did the yarn over also how to start. I'm still a bit confused about the yarn over but haven't actually tried it yet. Thanks so much for sharing. It is a good way to start lace knitting which to me has been daunting.
7 times I have tried this and pulled it out because I end up missing a stich.. Something is happening I think in that first slip stich YO. I wish I could show you on Skype while Im doing it. :) We need an internet knitting circle. I'm going to try it again.
@knittingtipsbyjudy I would like to thank the other ladies for asking about the YO. whether it is clockwise or anti clockwise. It's something that has me confused as I start on this lace journey.
This is a wonderful introduction to lace knitting. I am just starting to do knit lacework and this is my first attempt. Thank you so much for this pattern and your teaching methods. You are so easy to follow. I like that you repeat over and over what you are doing.
How do you start a project like this from casting on? Do you cast on the number of stiches you need and then knit the first row before begining the like lace stich?
the only problem would be when you do the decreases, but if you do a straight hat that you bunch up at the top yes. let me know if you try it before I get around to it. BTW, I'm working on some variations of this stitch. please keep watching. thanks.
@knittingtipsbyjudy ok, I tried it on a hat, I decreased by sets of six instead of my regular eight and continued the pattern over to the next set. It worked decently well, but next time I will definitely be doing a straight hat, all that math in my head constantly(and not using markers) made it kind of daunting.
I'm having trouble with this for some reason. When I try to do the K2tog - they are too tight. Even when I try to knit loose. Any tips? Anyone else have that prob?
i had this problem too, but what i tried to do (not sure if i can explain this properly!) is when i do the yarn over, i make sure its loose, then do the k2tog, then pull the right needle slightly so that the new stitch that was created by the k2tog becomes a bit looser. hope that makes sense! :)
heya, just thought i'd reply to your question, as i had problems with a yarn over for ages! look for yarn over demonstrations on youtube, or look for a basic 'how to knit' video, which may show a yarn over being done, particularly a video on ribbing, hope that helps :)
i'd say there was 18 stitches there, as it looks like 8 rows in the scarf (made up of the k2tog) which means 16 stitches, plus 1 knit stitch on each side, although i could be wrong, but hope that helps. :)
That looks so easy! Thank you Judy, I have never heard of this stich untill your vidoe. I guess that is a good thing though ;). You always make things easy and then ends up the same way the hard way is :)! That why I love your vidoes!! Thanks !!!
I would knit one row plain and cast off. When I make my scarves with this stitch I usually knit a few rows in garter stitch at each end so it won't roll up. Hope this was helpful. Please keep watching for new videos. I try to get a new one up at least once a week.
I used a thin wool boucle, something I found in my stash.
However, I've made lots of scarves with this stitch and used thick yarn on big needles as well as thin yarn on small needles. It always looks good. For a sample watch my video Same Yarn, different needles.
I think I have my baby blanket pattern. I do have a question though, most patterns I see for baby blankets call for the round needles. Is that a must do?
Hey Judy, I want to make sure I'm seeing your technique correctly.....when you knit two together, are you putting the right hand needle under the next two stitches that are DIRECTLY ON THE LEFT HAND NEEDLE, or below those stitches directly on the needle? Thank you for your wonderful way of teaching.......
I don't quite understand what you're doing with the first stitch in each row - is it just a knit stitch? Why did you call it a selvedge? I am knitting a scarf using stockinette stitch and the edges curve in very badly. Is there something I can do to remedy the curve or should I just block it after its done. thanks!
I always slip the first stitch on every row. Selvage is what the edges are called. With stockinette stitch there is NO way to knit it so it doesn't curl. Even if you block it it will curl. The best stitches for scarves are ribbing or any stitch that's the same on both sides. I have a lot of videos on those kinds of stitches. Like lace is a good one. Happy knitting.
I wish I had seen the 'like lace' before I started, but now have knit almost the whole scarf and am not sure I want to pull it all out. I guess I should just do it since the edges are so badly curling. I could do the like lace and have a narrow band of ribbing on the edges. Oh, la! I'll think about it tomorrow!
BTW, I learned from my mom to knit European style, where you loop the yarn around the forefinger of the left hand instead of the way you and most other people seem to knit.
So glad I could help with this, one of my favorite patterns, not to mention your sanity. Some people find it difficult, but I think it's easy and beautiful. Please keep watching for more videos. I'm trying to get them up as fast as I can.
I will do a video on this eventually. I think doing the single stitches for the edges is a good idea. Keep watching for new videos and happy knitting.
I would like to use this while knitting in the round on circular needles. I assume you would not need the first single stitch or the last single stitch.
Please explain how to use this while knitting in the round.
OR if this would even work while knitting in the round?
Can I start by just knitting the first several rows with single stitches and finishing the same way? (to make a finished edge at the beginning and the end.)
can you please explain how to increase the number of stiches while knitting? i have managed decreasing in this pattern but i am not sure how to increase and keep the form. thanks
You would add on to the edges, same as you probably did when you decreased. I usually use it for straight knitting...scarves or blankets. Happy knitting!
This was a bit fast for me to follow. I'm a beginner at knitting so can you please make a video in which you knit slower. Thanks and its a really nice pattern.
sorry it went too fast. I try to slow down, but my needles just jump away with the yarn. Please keep practicing and I think you will like this stitch.
If you follow closely what Judy is doing, she is NOT knitting the first stitch but just slipping it over and then yarning over before knitting two together.
I notice at the end with the last two stitches that she knits together she is NOT yarning over and then actually knitting the last stitch, which keeps the stitches an even number.
What type of yarn and what needle size are you using? I think my yarn is too bulky!
KPVickers420 2 weeks ago
Yes, a K2tog would be a decrease but when you YO, you are increasing again so it evens out.

i'd say there was 18 stitches there, as it looks like 8 rows in the scarf (made up of the k2tog) which means 16 stitches, plus 1 knit stitch on each side, although i could be wrong, but hope that helps. :)
Salma448 2 years ago
Judy, are you waiting to take your k2tog stitch off the needle after you do the yarn over? or do you do the yarn over before the k2tog?
hakgem 2 years ago
That looks so easy! Thank you Judy, I have never heard of this stich untill your vidoe. I guess that is a good thing though ;). You always make things easy and then ends up the same way the hard way is :)! That why I love your vidoes!! Thanks !!!

glad you like this stitch.

For this stitch how would you bind off/cast off at the end?
lovemenow0413 2 years ago
I would knit one row plain and cast off. When I make my scarves with this stitch I usually knit a few rows in garter stitch at each end so it won't roll up. Hope this was helpful. Please keep watching for new videos. I try to get a new one up at least once a week.

Judy, what kind of yarn do you suggest for this stitch? What did you use in the video - it is beautiful!
jenarm959 2 years ago
I used a thin wool boucle, something I found in my stash.
However, I've made lots of scarves with this stitch and used thick yarn on big needles as well as thin yarn on small needles. It always looks good. For a sample watch my video Same Yarn, different needles.
thanks for writing and happy knitting.

I think I have my baby blanket pattern. I do have a question though, most patterns I see for baby blankets call for the round needles. Is that a must do?
sweetdrk1 2 years ago
It's easier, and more comfortable, to knit something large on a round needle but you can certainly do it on 2 long needles.
check out the new video I put on yesterday.

Hey Judy, I want to make sure I'm seeing your technique correctly.....when you knit two together, are you putting the right hand needle under the next two stitches that are DIRECTLY ON THE LEFT HAND NEEDLE, or below those stitches directly on the needle? Thank you for your wonderful way of teaching.......
imagoodegg2 2 years ago
Into the stitches, not below.
good luck with your knitting and check out the new video I put on yesterday.

Curtains....what a great idea. let me know if you do it and how it turns out.

I don't quite understand what you're doing with the first stitch in each row - is it just a knit stitch? Why did you call it a selvedge? I am knitting a scarf using stockinette stitch and the edges curve in very badly. Is there something I can do to remedy the curve or should I just block it after its done. thanks!
sherozzel 2 years ago
I always slip the first stitch on every row. Selvage is what the edges are called. With stockinette stitch there is NO way to knit it so it doesn't curl. Even if you block it it will curl. The best stitches for scarves are ribbing or any stitch that's the same on both sides. I have a lot of videos on those kinds of stitches. Like lace is a good one. Happy knitting.
knittingtipsbyjudy 2 years ago
I wish I had seen the 'like lace' before I started, but now have knit almost the whole scarf and am not sure I want to pull it all out. I guess I should just do it since the edges are so badly curling. I could do the like lace and have a narrow band of ribbing on the edges. Oh, la! I'll think about it tomorrow!
BTW, I learned from my mom to knit European style, where you loop the yarn around the forefinger of the left hand instead of the way you and most other people seem to knit.
sherozzel 2 years ago
oh gosh, don't rip it out. If you have the energy you could pick up the stitches on the sides and knit a few rows garter stitch. that would help.
your way of knitting looks so much faster than mine, but it's how I learned and will do forever.
good luck.

Thank You so very much! You have helped me with so many patterns with just your explanation of this stitch. You have saved my sanity.... :)
Tankgirlie 3 years ago
So glad I could help with this, one of my favorite patterns, not to mention your sanity. Some people find it difficult, but I think it's easy and beautiful. Please keep watching for more videos. I'm trying to get them up as fast as I can.
Happy knitting!

I will do a video on this eventually. I think doing the single stitches for the edges is a good idea. Keep watching for new videos and happy knitting.

Nice pattern.
I am making a cowl necked hood.
(to make a finished edge at the beginning and the end.)
thanks,
Meg

can you please explain how to increase the number of stiches while knitting? i have managed decreasing in this pattern but i am not sure how to increase and keep the form. thanks
knittynit 3 years ago
You would add on to the edges, same as you probably did when you decreased. I usually use it for straight knitting...scarves or blankets. Happy knitting!

It's a very easy pattern to follow. Thanks for this!

Glad you like it. I love this stitch. Happy knitting.
knittingtipsbyjudy 3 years ago
This was a bit fast for me to follow. I'm a beginner at knitting so can you please make a video in which you knit slower. Thanks and its a really nice pattern.
AvrilRoxy 3 years ago
sorry it went too fast. I try to slow down, but my needles just jump away with the yarn. Please keep practicing and I think you will like this stitch.
knittingtipsbyjudy 3 years ago
Hi,
If you follow closely what Judy is doing, she is NOT knitting the first stitch but just slipping it over and then yarning over before knitting two together.
I notice at the end with the last two stitches that she knits together she is NOT yarning over and then actually knitting the last stitch, which keeps the stitches an even number.
Hope this helps.

This is a great pattern!

I love it and use it all the time. With a thin yarn it can look elegant, with a thick yarn it can look bulky. Happy knitting!
