  • This is a very "tranquil" video. =p

  • ozone hole depends on solar activity cycles....

  • it doesn't really look as though the hole is getting larger or ozone is getting depleted. Just some fluctuations.

  • Looking good...

  • in 2002 chuck norris farted ..

  • NASA's site referenced above has a graph that shows that the whole *closes up* for nearly half the year. Interesting that every frame in the video here is from very near the peak hole size and not the minimum size. This is a natural phenomenon due to the polar jet stream and how & where ozone gets created. Yes, created. UV light entering an Oxygen-rich environment creates Ozone.

  • @MultiSteveB i absolutely hate being a grammar nazi... but... you spelled hole wrong...

  • @OrogDeMalfur Danged autocorrect. :-\

  • Um... so... we're good. Right?

  • psycho

  • Yeah dont bother to show the ozone layer on the other side, the ice is melting and refreezing in the south , hence all the heat and the whole in the ozone layer. The climate is just changing the whole barely has anything to do with human's doings. It's all a part of the plan that EARTH has created. Just like egypt used to be lush and green now its a desert, the north pole will more or less "move" to the south pole.

  • 2002 was almost the same state as 1979.... so much for it getting bigger.

It looks to me like it has been like this for millions of years and was just another scare-science tactic used in the 80's to get more money.

  • @Awsomo666 if someone is lying for any purpose that is no longer science.Science=truth

  • @jardy90 Science is actually all based on Theory.

  • @TWolfe020 true but some of those theories eventually become true and how we know it is? because we tested it and get our answer.

  • @TWolfe020 there is a theory that if you have 2 pencils and you add another 2 pencils to it, you get 4... Its just a theory, but wait you can test it !

    Try it yourself

  • @zeejenkins what is that proving?

  • @TWolfe020 that you can prove theories....

  • @zeejenkins But the way that you represented that was as if every theory can be right when there are millions of theories that are proven wrong all the time.

  • @TWolfe020 I did not mean for it to come out that way, I was just saying that yes, all theories are nothing but theories, but they still have some factual evidence to prove them, and if they are found to be wrong science tries to correct the mistakes they did. Unlike the unchanging religion.

but, I honestly have no idea what I am talking about... I do not really even know why I got into this discussion. Sorry for wasting your time.

  • @zeejenkins No biggie. I was just curious to where your stance was and your reasoning for what you were saying haha.

  • @Awsomo666 well imagine what the world would be like if we weren't given limits bro...human beings get out of control, and what you describe as greed and scare tactics im not saying isn't true, but thanks to it, we aren't consuming and polluting as much as we would be if it wasn't for this scary science.

  • UV-radiation is the same thing as radioactive gamma-radiation just weaker. Both are electromagnetic-radiation.

So its worth to spend some bucks for sunblockers.

  • The "hole" in the ozone shown in the video is located above the earth's pole, the only location on the planet that gets identical amounts of light and dark all year. At the exact pole, the direct sunlight casted perpendicular to the ozone, combined with the increased amount of uv penetration on a given area where light meets dark, the average atmospheric conditions are diminished. The center of said "hole" can shift, and change in size, but is a part of the planet's natural state. Climate chang

  • Somebody at NASA was sleeping on the job in 1995....

  • Biggest fraud ever.

Ozone thinning occurs over the poles because of the earth's magnetic field capturing energetic particles from the sun.

  • @Ibringthetruth1 What would gain be from this be?

  • @Ibringthetruth1 you call ozone depletion a FRAUD? go live outside Earth!!!

  • @ranmurong

There is no ozone hole created by CFC's.

  • If it got bigger what would it hurt?

  • @john17972

    what would the radiation due???

    kill us of course

  • @john17972

Increased amount of UV B and UV C would be allowed to reach the surface which would cause bad things like:

    Skill and eye cancer

    weaken immune system

    inhibit photosyntehsis in some plants

  • looks fine to me.

  • come on

  • Would be interesting to be able to go back 10,000 years and see if it's always done this or if it really is our fault. My betting would be that it's always done it and that we have a smaller impact on it than the politicians would like us to believe.

  • @eyeswideopennimrod Yes its really our fault. There is really no doubt. The good thing is that it is healing up pretty well after the global ban of CFC:s... Why the paranoia? "The politicians want us to believe" Are you sure you are not mixing it up with global warming conspiracy paranoia?

  • @Hopefulfilment with the sliver of evidence we have about the ozone layer from 79 to present and given the age of the planet and the assumed age of Ozone there is much room for doubt regardless of your opinion.

  • @th3don147 yes, not as much.

  • wow looks to me like the damn thing changes quite abit. Bigger and smaller and in 2002 it looks like the hole is almost gone completly. wow the hole in the Ozone is over antartica the coldest place on earth and a place where the earth never recieves direct rays from the sun.

Anyone ever thing the hole in the Ozone is supposed to be there?

  • @luckyhubbie of course its there, ozone is manufactured by lighting. do you really expect thundrestorms in the dryest part of the earth?

  • @luckyhubbie Hey dude, it gets direct sunlight 24 hours a day in summer, whats your point?

There is no doubt that human produced freon gases has caused the ozone hole. (One CFC molecule can destroy 100 000 + ozone molecules... easy lab test..)

The fact that the hole is closing and on the way of healing since the global ban of these chemicals should be a good pointer and also show that human kind CAN prevent global disasters if they just put their mind to it... "supposed to be there?" wow

  • @Hopefulfilment O3 doesn't last long at low altitiudes no matter what it comes in contact with so unless your lab is in the sky it's not such an easy experiment. And just because it gets sun 24 hours doesn't mean it gets the sun's direct rays. We have daylight in America but we don't get the sun's direct rays. And there's no proof that the hole in the Ozone hasn't always been there. The hole was there before we had the techknology find it.

@datzfast Never said it wasn't there just saying

  • wow looks to me like the damn thing changes quite abit. Bigger smaller and wow teh Ozone is over antartica the coldest place on earth and a place where the earth never recieves direct rays from the sun.

Anyone ever thing the hole in the Ozone is supposed to be there?

  • dude stop making jokes... not funny we're all gonna die!

  • the ozone layer must be dating a black guy

  • This is amazingly indicative of our depleting attention span or increasing ADD..what ever you want to call it!!

AGW has completely taken over the headlines since about 2002 and although this was the number one environmental concern in the late 1990's and we actually passed a number of very comprehensive laws banning CFC's...there is NOTHING about ozone in the headlines for a decade now!!

    Why?

Perhaps no money to be made..compared to selling Cap and Trade.

    now..ozone is apparently a CO2 Trap

  • @th3don147 im a freshman and i just learned that

  • I came here because people are getting harsh sunburns and I wanted to know is there more than one of these holes? where is it's current position? does it move and in what direction?

  • @PsalmsNmyrrh no it never moves

  • KEEP ON SPRAYING CFCs, we have SO much hope in store for 2020

  • @palebit, I'm confident that you would need Wikipedia to even know what CFC's are. Or what they do. Or what they're in. Or, perhaps, the altitude of the ozone layer? Yeah, it's really quite far away. And, thanks to some gummint meddling, it isn't used in cars, aerosols, or any other damn thing. Other than certain variants of styrofoam, CFC's haven't got a lot of purveyors left, except in 'developing nations', perhaps.

  • that's weird, what happened in '02?

  • haha itak wyscy zginiecie niestety i ja terz wasza technologia was zabija a mojej elektrycznej nikt nie uznał hj w w dpe

  • ... Why were there some years when the hole almost entirely vanished? I can't imagine that in those months/years all of humanity miraculously stopped using CFCs and other polutants until a month or so later.

  • @Versudan doesn't work that way...CFC's take decades to reach the ozone layer. But their are natural fluctuations in the ozone layer as well

  • Bunch of idiots arguing over what is causing a slow leak on their SUV's tire.

    They have no spare tire.

So just sit there and argue til it goes flat.

Now stick your thumb out into space and hope someone stops to pick you up.

Then stick your head between your legs and kiss the earth goodbye.

  • I'd like to know what made it thicken up in 2004.

  • @MegaBoxer77 I didn't eat as much Taco Bell that year.

  • @Sabohaque

Or, maybe the earth was using Rogain.

  • Like the guy down there said. I CAN'T wait. Lol

  • awesome ..cant wait to die from ultra violate superwasting rays

  • impossible!

The ice in Antarctica hasn't even decreased or changed over 28 years!

Though i do believe the ozone layer to be like that...

  • @Arxtile

Ozone has very little to do with ice melt or global warming. Stop mindlessly following what the big oil companies (and the right) are telling you.

  • KILL KILL KILL THE EARTH

  • Strange, ozone gas can damage our lungs, yet it protects us from harmful rays from the sun...

  • soviet russia jokes are lame.

  • @shiny1s cuz you suck at telling them

  • shouldn't it be over China or something?

  • What if more ppl on earth requiers more energy= more sun needs to pass through to the earth. Just beacuse something is chaning it dosent mean by automaticly that it is dangerous.

  • fuck global warming and CO² is all a lie dont forgot we had our last ice age we are going now from the ice age in a normal weather ,

  • In soviet russia, ozone layer makes a hole in you!

  • @the603kid Chuck Norris once fucked the ozone hole. It hasn't recovered since.

  • @the603kid No.

  • WTF happened in 2002??

  • wow 2002 we were awesome! :D

  • @luciousa71 i wonder what happend

  • Stop worrying about this, we'll probably figure out how to go back in time sometime in the 21st century. So just chill, man.

  • @carlmelanson1 Going back in time is impossible. Look up: Into the Universe: Time Travel

  • @okc543 I wasn't being serious lol.

  • Seems like in 2002 is almost dissapeared.

  • Oct, 2002: The earth had a good year from a significant drop in motor and air travel after the attacks on the U.S. the previous year.

  • So... The hole got bigger after the CFC ban. Here is the simple fact: Freon was banned because its patent expired and DuPont couldn't make any more money off of it.

Don't trust me just Google it the truth is out there.

    read "Ozone: The Hole Truth"

    We have been scammed.

The evaporation of sea water, the eruption of volcanoes all produce in a moment more than the total production of all man-made chlorine since the dawn of the industrial revolution.

  • @DominusTemporis Amen. Finally some one who makes sense.

  • I also forgot.. one of the main causes for Ozone depletion is chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's) why do you think it is now mandatory for all aerosol cans to be CFC free... why do you think they changed the formulation for freon... it wasn't because it was toxic... it was because of CFC's

  • ... Some of you are right in some points and you others should keep your mouths shut.. The Ozone is made of several gasses. Carbon monoxide happens to be one of the gasses that depletes the others due to the Extra heat buildup.... Why don't you go read some books and learn something.

  • @Xearo167 hey thanks man I will, you saved my life!

  • 2002

  • wow, thats a big hole

  • The "ozone hole" matches the same shape as the lines of the Earth's MAGNETIC field. Charged particles from the sun coming down the lines of force, maybe disrupting ozone production or displacing it some how. Check out the Aurora Borealis, it follow the same pattern as the ozone hole.

  • Interesting earth science.

    -Author Diana Neiderhiser

  • humans didnt make ozone hole i mean its over fuckink antartica if it was made by pollution it would be above america asia or europe not antartic...only gases u have thera are penguins gases =)

  • You are in wrong, it's a matter of spining move of Earth. But it's strange, in 2002 ozone hole was quite small, but later it came bigger .

  • Probably got something to do with the sun. Perhaps sunspots since the radiation caught by earth is mostly centered at the poles. In 2004 a large group of sunspots were... well... spotted. Perhaps that's your dramatic increase from 2002.

Over the last couple of decades the sun has had a markedly high average level of sunspot activity. I think people are underestimating the effects the sun has on earth.

  • My god, you're a dumbass. The earth rotates, and the atmosphere is whirling around thicker at the equator, and thinner at the poles. Australia has some of the highest skin cancer rates, directly attributed to the fact that the hole in the ozone wobbles off-center and is sometimes over Australia's longitudes. Where've you been for the past 20 years? This is old news, long before anybody was talking about "global warming". Do some historic research without parroting favorite political opinions.

  • Study up on aerosols and international bans on CFC's, leading up to the discontinuation of the use of freon, etc. You gotta go back a ways.

  • I heard there isnt no hole in the ozone anymore!

  • how do we know that the hole hasn't always been there? Where is the imaging showing what it looked like before, oh we didn;t have satellites... hmmm. Seriously though, maybe it's just the way things are.

  • @Asylumescapee69

and that is why it keeps getting bigger? oO

i could give you more reasons (more complicated ones) but i'm not in the mood to change an opinion atm.

if all scientists in the WORLD find it true, a kid/man/woman is unlikely to prove them wrong. >.>

  • @Domyras

it's not a matter of opinion.

    It hasn't consistently gotten anything.

Over the entire course of all records of measurements it has only fluctuated.

Sure CFC's do in fact turn O3 into O2.

But why would a singular hole form collecting over the south pole? In terms of both gravitational pull and electromagnetism, there is no apparent reason for it to be there rather than consistently thinning everywhere. And why can't we make O3 and release it into the atmosphere?

  • @Domyras

My opinion is simply that we don't know everything like we so often assume we do.

There is not sufficient evidence to believe without a doubt that the Hole appeared because of us. Yes we can see a short term trend, but it is not conclusive. On the other hand, what is highly compelling is the presence of holes on other planets. There are other possibilities. This is why science is theoretical. Theory does not equal truth. I shouldn't have to tell you this.

  • @Asylumescapee69

your efforts make me smile. :) (good thing xD it's not an insult :p)

you are correct in the fact that it is more theoretical at the moment then practical but still.. there is enough evidence isn't there? ;)

  • @Asylumescapee69 You are living in cloud cuckoo land. Please... "other planets"?? Ozone depletion is well understood. But there will always be people in denial of environmental damage. No evidence is enough for them.

  • @Mechness

WHAT EVIDENCE??? I NEED SOUND EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE TO MAKE CONCLUSIONS!!!

I would give you references to science pages about O-Zone detection being used as a factor to find Earth-like planets... but YouTube doesn't allow links in comments. Not even to their own videos... But yes, some planets have super-thick atmospheres like Venus, with no visible hole, some have thinner atmospheres and have a hole at either pole caused by centrifugal force.

  • @Asylumescapee69 Why don't you read the literature? Why did the ozone depletion trend level off after the CFC phaseout? Given that the chemistry can be recreated in a lab, the atmospheric levels of CFCs measured, and the intermediates and products of the reaction found in the lower stratosphere, what is your competing theory? If you have no alternative theory you have no grounds to challenge consensus.

There are no other observable planets with an ozone layer. Earth is the only one with life.

  • @Mechness

Again, nothing you, or anyone, have presented shows reasonable conclusive proof to believe the hole was at one time not there. All you have evidence of is the effect of CFC's and a very small trend that can't possibly add up to substituting for a lack of measurements for over 30 years.

It's not even necessary to make such a conclusion. CFC's were phased out more than 20 years ago. Why hasn't the trend been reversed?

And yes, once again, there ARE observable exo-planets with O-Zone!

  • @Asylumescapee69 Read the literature. Detailed ozone measurements were first made in the late 50s. Your "small trend" has been a 60% reduction from baseline! The trend hasn't been reversed due to time lags. The phaseout has been gradual. CFC release lags CFC production. It takes 5 years for those CFCs to make their way to the Antarctic stratosphere. CFCs in aerosols were phased out in the late 70s yet CFC levels peaked in 1994.

There are no other known planets with ozone. Ozone indicates life!

  • @Mechness

There you go. A delay. Our USEFUL measurements started in the 70's. When did we start using CFC's? 1930 What would be a reasonable delay before an effect would really show up? Between 73 and 86 there was a 2.5% overall loss of O-zone. From 86 to 94, 3%. WHY WAS THERE A HOLE FROM THE START? They didn't discover it at all until the late 70's but that doesn't prove it wasn't already there. In fact, the trend makes it far more likely that the hole was always there.

  • @Asylumescapee69 Read the literature. You have to get things into perspective. Production even in the 90s was many times what it was in the 50s let alone the 30s. The Dobson spectrophotometer was invented in the 1920s. By the late 50s the seasonal variation in the Antarctic had already been measured. Look up Dr Gordon Dobson, Halley Bay, etc. Read the literature.

  • @Mechness

And where the hell do you get 60% from???

The total depletion recorded over all measurements amounts to 12%.

  • @Asylumescapee69 You're confusing a reduction in total (global) ozone with the seasonal minimum at the poles. Only the latter is attributable to CFCs because only in the polar winter is the temperature low enough.

  • Hey Asylumescapee69, you are correct, the hole has certainly been there for a much longer period of time :) The reason NASA is measuring the ozone hole is that the hole has been getting worse, and the cause is attributed to humans releasing CFC's into the atmosphere. peace

  • crap, read more and learn about science not politics

  • @Asylumescapee69 If we had satellites back then, you would still be asking that same question back then. How do we know? Well we can't know everything, but we can reason, and analyzing the surface of the Earth. That's the same way how we know how long ago dinosaurs were living on Earth. For some things you just don't always need imaging or satellites.

  • @GregSidelnikov

No there is only one question to ask at any time: "When did the hole 'change/form' and what did we do to cause it."

All we have right now is "what we have been doing for about 60 years that apparently did something over the last 30 years." That's all we have to go on.

My point is, we can't conclude anything except that we do have an impact, and should be more responsible in our doings. Fear shouldn't be the motivator behind this, so why convince us we made it without proof?

  • @Asylumescapee69 We? Who we? It seems that you are just sitting there on your ass and posting YouTube comments. You like to talk don't you? But when it comes to actually doing something there are not that many volunteers. You have freedom of speech, and freedom of opinion. But that's all it is if it is only a YouTube comment post. It also means that nobody has to listen to you. You are no expert. you are a nobody.

  • @GregSidelnikov What place do you have to be asserting who I am or what I do? You know absolutely nothing about me. It's a damn good thing you aren't a scientist. The LAST thing we need is more ASSUMPTIONS! But that's fine, you have nothing to offer, it's only natural that you would seek to attack me personally. Way to represent YOUR self.

  • @GregSidelnikov

How long ago were dinosaurs on Earth? Oh somewhere in the range of 1 and 2 billion years ago... And all carbon on Earth originated from the same reaction... so we can rely on that 100% right? You can't know by any means so far known to man what it was like 100 years ago without a satellite back then. There is no direct and measurable causality from O-zone trends to represent what it must have been. Therefore any speculation is simply that.

  • @Asylumescapee69 I'm not going to debate this subject with you. Go back to something you're good at, like fixing TVs.

  • @GregSidelnikov Debate? What debate? All we have if you trying hard to be insulting, and failing.

You shouldn't be arguing anything since you can't handle the basics of honesty and integrity, and have to resort to uninformed, completely guessed attacks that aren't really of any value. As it so happens I AM good at fixing just about ANYTHING. Do YOU know how to make O-zone and put it back into the atmosphere? I DO and also have the means to! So ask YOURSELF what are YOU doing besides this.

  • why is the ozone layer thinning in the uninhabited antarctic? Puzzling isn't it.

  • @torofighter

Ozone-destroying reactions involve sunlight and very cold temperatures. These reactions don't happen as much over the north pole because it doesn't have a large land mass to allow such cold temperatures.

  • the ozone is trying to heal but it cant cuz of smoke and factorys why cant the goverment do somthing

  • cuz the government likes you a slave and what better way than through environmental collapse and brutal poverty! if you can't grow your own food anymore, you're totally pliable to corporations. YAY! i love globocorps cuz they know how to USE humanity like the SHEEP they are. good for them. they deserve it.

  • @curtuman1

Because some people like the idea of melting ice caps. There's some amazing stuff preserved under the antarctic 2ft thick layer of ice which is no more than 10000 years old. Ultimately the hole WILL repair itself when we enter the next ice age, and lots of sheeple will die along the way regardless of these things...

  • Comment removed

  • You missed one.

    its You're not your.

At the beginning of your little corrective post.

  • huumm that's not good but i saw that in several years the hole seemed fixing itself of course boecause our care .. that means we can follow give more help.. I hope ...

  • WHAT??! there is!!

  • Juanchodt go to antartica to see for your self if you do not believe this.

  • @juanchodt I agree with you

  • Tesla coils generate ozone. Tesla coils also transmit power over vast distances. The answer is to derive power from solar panels and feed that power to large Tesla coils. Free power for everyone. Get all the govt's' to pay for it in unison. This will also replenish the ozone layer. Maybe a way to harness the ionosphere could be found too like Tesla himself first suggested.

  • I forgot to mention putting the Tesla coils in low Earth orbit.

  • we don't want ground-level ozone. it's poisonous.

  • Low level orbiting ozone generator does not produce ground lelvel ozone.

  • @srhanna ah, i didn't see that comment ;)

  • very nice idea, might even work

  • haha, people can be so ignorant sometimes.... anyway, id october the ozone hole is the bigger it can get every year, then it starts its self-regeneration (for calling it somehow) and the hole dissapears... it all is because of the sun, 6 months it lights the south hemisphere, and the other 6 no... and the ozone is created by the sun, so it is the sun the one hwo gives the atmosphere the energy to regenerate itself; this is only to make a show, the world takes ignorance as a bussines...

  • The video is showing the hole only during the month of October, so your claims about the fluctuations being seasonal-depedant can't be accurate.

  • Lol Evilfisher iTs True.

  • your obviously mores stupid than a pencil..that is cleary antartica

  • never heard of it, wich state is that?

  • @evilash1996 the ozone hole is mostly in antartica

  • We made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?" [Al-Quraan 21:30]

Only after advances have been made in science, do we now know that cytoplasm, the basic substance of the cell is made up of 80% water. Modern research has also revealed that most organisms consist of 50% to 90% water and that every living entity requires water for its existence.

  • @evilash1996 no you are the stupid pencil the ozon hole is located around antartica and looking to you youtube username your only 13-14 years old so please learn about things in school first before you are acting like a lozer.

  • @android2307 thats axactly what i said! that what you are looking at is antartica!.. everyone else was like Its australia! so i said nay nay nay! that is antartica not australia!. so i think i deserve an apology :)

  • @android2307 judging by how you talk to him, you're not older (mentally at least.)

  • @evilash1996 *you're

    *more

    *clearly

    *Antarctica

And fix up the two periods - are you ending a sentence? Providing space before another thought? Come on now, let's be scientific here.

  • @SoUnDoLe exsquezze me sir but, how about you shut the ferkk up!

  • @evilash1996 Are you 14? If you are then I really don't understand why these morons think it's funny to insult you. I'm just glad you gave as good as you got. Good job. Oh... and it's a ? not a ! to ask a question. The More You Know! lol

  • @jacksawild i cant tell if your insulting me? silly kids

  • god damn rite its true

    i

  • The ozone hole is showing the wobble and rotation of the interior reaction which is emitting ions from the south pole opening... Sharp as a marble! lol

  • hu cares about grammer i like the vid tho also how do u think ufus get into earth i thinkin thu the ozone hole we made over time? who disagrees lol

  • is that asia?

  • its antartica

  • DAMN IT!!!

    stop replying on me!!!

im NOT the one who typed that MY COUZIN did!!!

    she fuckin used my account!!!

  • 2002 seems a good year :P

  • 1.i smell bad if i dont smell good right?

2.i guess your right about that :P

3.but i get food from there or else it will get spoiled :(

    4.wtf is a hairspray?

  • 1. Those things mostly do NOT contains CFCs anymore.

    2. However, the replacements for CFCs, HCFCs, still cause damage, but much less.

    3. The ozone hole is shrinking. It should return to somewhere near normal around 2050-2060 at current rates.

Please don't freak out about the Earth. It's been here a long time and will stay around for a few more long times.

  • Its from beaming the ionosphere with microwaves for weather modification, look up "H.A.A.R.P." very very serious problem that is kept in the dark!!

  • A University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute scientist has compared the HAARP to an "immersion heater in the Yukon River."

  • i bet u that hole gets worse every year

  • its actually cooling down...XD

  • FUCKA BITCH

  • To anyone talking about how "liberals are wrong" or "conservatives are wrong". Liberals and Conservatives are political stances. Science and politics do not mix. Quite simply put, if you think that someone being Liberal or Conservative makes them right or wrong about science, then you're obviously not qualified to make statements about scientific fact. You might have the right to an opinion, but that doesn't make your opinion right. Plus, opinions have no place in science. Only facts do.

  • Preach on brotha preach on

  • We use much less freon now than we did twenty years ago. Have a look at your dedodorant. It probably uses butane or propane as propellant rather than cfc gas. The ozone hole stopped growing for a reason.

  • The thing is, the data showing that CFCs react with O-Zone has never been replicated by independant laboratory experiments. So it might be perfectly natural. It might not be natural. We can't really be sure. Even if CFCs aren't really to blame. There's more we don't know about our influence or lack there of than we do about out influence.
