I can't stand Costello , but this song is the most perfect example of a writer creating a song with a particular voice in mind. No one has written a more fitting and beautiful song for Chet , even the version in Let's Get Lost is beautiful in a damaged way , he makes every song his own like Sinatra did.
Thanks for uploading! This is as close to perfect as I can imagine hearing.....I can't stop listening....or crying! He was one of only a few musicians that can move their audience to tears! How many times have you heard this quote: "You gotta pay your dues"....."Man, he's PLAYIN, but He ain't SAYIN nothin". That can never be said of Chet Baker, he was a '"Real Player". RIP
This rendition is definitely Live from Tokyo. I have the album. Note for note they are the same and a jazz version would otherwise never be so. Pianist: Harold Danko. Bass: Hein Van Der Geyn. Drums: John Engels.
My most favorite recording of all,And I'm 72 and have listened to a lot of good jazz. The only thing that comes close for me is Coltrane's Lush Life...

Usually can't stand jazz, leaves me cold or gets on my nerves. But mercy, this is as close to heaven as we can get here on earth.

@4Topwood gets on your nerves? Go back and listen to Bird, Lester Young, The MJQ and on and on...Jazz is beautiful with a diversity of styles.

My rock band used to play this song, along with "Freddie the Freeloader" in Los Angeles - it was always really fun!
