Speaking if ECT did you know that the CIA had a secret brainwashing program called MKUltra they paid a Dr Cameron in Montreal to carry it out using ECT 80 times stronger than what was considered acceptable he injected LSD and put people into weeks of sleep as a brainwash tape played I was on of the victims I am telling my story under youkilledyourmother
And as for "juggalofatkid's comment about it working because of 'hope' that's bullshit too or else the pills and therapy and groups and hospitals would have helped me cause i had hope for all of them too!
I agree this video is bullshit and 'juggalofatkid' is full of shit, it is humane. I'm in the middle of a treatment course atm, and while not pleasant it is definitely NOT awful.
This video disgusts me as it may put people off potentially life saving treatment, as not all depression can be 'cured' with pills.
This video was designed to exploit people's ignorance and fear of ECT. I mean, come on! The music, the ominous-sounding narrator ("Electroshock! Electroshock! Electroshock!")
ECT saved the life of someone in my family. I knew a couple of people who've had it in the last 10 years or so, and they didn't remember the treatment, but for whatever reason it helped them. But this video is baloney.
i wont deny that ECT works for some patients, it still hasnt gone anywhere in psychiatry from where it started. Theres no reason for how it works. The anesthetic is given so u dont feel pain and the muscle relaxant is to paralyze u so you don't break a bone when ur muscles are supposed to be having spasms and ur body is convulsing from the actual shock. It APPEARS more humane. patients receive drugs to avoid physical trauma. The affects are the same Its just as brutal as when it started.
So you don't have any pain, or break any bones, or even remember the treatment. Sorry, but that DOES sound humane to me. You say the effects are brutal, but give no specifics. And just because we don't know why it works doesn't mean that there is no reason. If we don't know the reason, that doesn't mean there isn't one. ECT may look scary to people who've never seen it done, but depression is a thousand times worse.
When the results for ECT's success rates have to be influenced by outside factors to convince patients of false hopes for their healing, there is problem. As a person who has witnessed the "therepy" first hand as well as been denied this treatment because i had questions for a top ECT doctor in the united states that he was not allowed to answer, i would have to say that ECT is elusive, risky & cosmetically remodeled to appear better. At least your at a cognitive state to feeling when depressed.
Why were you denied treatment when you were depressed? Because you wouldn't give consent? Although I disagree with your take, I'm glad to hear that you asked questions of your doctor, and when he didn't answer your questions, you did what I would have done if I had a choice. People, especially psychiatric patients who don't need hospitalization, should be persistent with their doctors, especially if what's been tried before hasn't worked. Even just looking at meds, there are a lot of options.
I had ECTs January 2006. Let me tell everybody that it saved me. I would not hesitate to have them again. I am more afraid to go to the dentist that have ECTs.
I agree with skitz1984. I actualyl watched it today myself as a psych nursing student and the procedure is far from what people think. Don't believe what the movies show you. It's coem a long way.
yeah ECT is done differently now, but its still an interesting vid - what is the purpose of this vid? its art - i thought it was great, "epic" in the theatrical sense - sound, visuals, narrative - i liked it - whats the music playing in the background?
Ragdolldna, what you say makes sense. This video does seem to be an impressionistic piece, designed to disturb, rather to educate or enlighten, and not a documentary.
I hate how people only show the bad videos of Ect...why don't you show videos of the thousands of people it has helped? I wqouldn't be here if it wasn't for ECT and if I needed it again, I wouldn't hestitate. Please stop posting these videos!!
I don't know too much about ECT, but from what I DO know, the majority of people (in the uk it's been banned) do not benefit from ECT. Whether this is a global phenomena I don't know, but having a family member go through this, I perosnally think that this video is totally correct and this is how I imagine it to be. I am bipolar myself and if I had to have this, I feel that I would go mad myself...
This video is so far from correct...these day when they give the anaesthetic they also give a muscle relaxant....the only visual way to know it's actually happening is barely a twitch of the finger!! Before posting how bad it is...go see how it's actually done these days.....it's completely the opposite to the video
I'm not sure the purpose of this video?....1900's scary! The same nurses pushing babys over and over. What does that have to do with the title of this video?? A language we cant understand ; also sounds scary. The center shock picture is scary and is the only thing that draws people to the video. Is not true today in 2007 ? Where is this video going? No explaination on the side at all. Very few comments compared to the views...poor 1 star.
Have you noticed, when people want to show the bad side of ECT they show images from the past? Modern ECT is NOTHING like the past... Because of it's negative past, it's a shame it gets such a bad rap!
This is a silly montage of photos of real and imaginary ECT pictures from the internet. Boring is the word. The nurses rolling babies out toward the end is lame.

I hope no one watching this thinks that the video represents modern ECT techniques.
This is a rather sensational video using pictures from a long time ago.
Modern ECT is a positive and rather innocent treatment for some forms of mental illness and is often immensly beneficial for patients.

What do you mean by " NYY " ?

yes great i took it 10 times see i m still typing
datatuvok 4 years ago
this is a text written and read by Antonin Artaud, french poet, actor and painter.
aliaspetrus 5 years ago
You are right Aliaspetrus, actually as many other at the time, Artaud has been tortured by the ECT method...

I think you want a reaction from the viewer.
I found this unsettling.
I think it sort of worked.
The music and the French voice over helped hold the attention...just.
