I think I saw this on "The Masked Magician". The crowd reactions when he 'bites off' his thumb are real, but there is some camera trickery for the TV audience to enhance the illusion.

But well done for working out his thumb was never really gone.

In my honest opinion, Mark Heap is one of the most underrated british actors. His performances in Spaced, Big Train, Jam, Green Wing are stuff of legend. Simon Pegg is brilliant but for sheer talent Mark has it hands down.
