All this worship. What about his support for sending a bunch of ignorant 20-somethings (the US and other armies) into Iraq, uninvited and WITH GUNS (That's a solution? @EmeraldTriangle80 I've just written a reply but it seems to have vanished so this may be a repeat but...The general public didn't really 'get' him here. It is assumed to be a freethinker is indeed a virtue; the freedom of the intellect is the hallmark of human nature in its freedom and in its creative spirit as given to it by Almighty God. The idea that Christians are simply unintellectual and unfree in their own minds and hearts is a complete nonsense.
"The idea that Christians are simply unintellectual and unfree in their own minds and hearts is a complete nonsense."
depends on what you call a Christian and what you believe to be true (or at least false). Everyone who is educated in basics of natural science and still believes in a god that is more than the origin of laws of nature (a quite meaningless being) I indeed consider dumb (or in denial).
I can't begin to imagine a world without intellegent free thinking people such as these... as far as Im concerned this is where hope lies... I am humbled and encouraged... thankyou.
I got as drunk as I could at the family Christmas reunion to honor his passing. I tried to maintain coherent conversation, and it's tough, Hitchens makes it look easy. Though I did get along better with people (I usually don't), maybe that's why Hitchens said alcohol makes other people less boring.
A lot of interesting people together, whom I didn't know about. And although my heart wept by the departure of the Hitch, my mind made a leap of joy to see so many gathered there.
"We are here to celebrate someone who shown that there is still, in this world, specially amongst the intelligent and curious young, a furios appetite for ideas, for knowledge, for thought and for the questioning of authority, for being a contrarian."
I don't miss Hitchens for one moment. His impact on me was so profound that I could never feel as if Hitchens wasn't with me, somewhere deep within the chasms of my mind. In 100 years, neither yours nor my name will be names on the tips of the tongues of the intellectual of the era. Christopher Hitchens will not be forgotten, lost to the pages of history. There will be more evidence for the existence of Hitchens than Jesus in 100 years.

There will never be another quite like Christopher Hitchens. A man of excellent wit, conviction and selfless determination to spread free inquiry and stomp out religious extremism, greed and lies.
We will all miss you, Hitch. Thank you for decades of enlightenment, for teaching us to think for ourselves and to remember (and not be afraid) that the world is not all about ourselves.
I am personally saddened by the passing of one of my heroes, yet I am incredibly thankful for both his words, and the fact that his words were spoken in our age of not only books and film, but also the market of ideas known as the Internet. Hitchens is available to us in more ways than any previous freethinker or public intellectual of their time. His wealth of knowledge and erudition is ours to cherish and learn from, or conversely to silence and ignore. I, for one, do not intend on the latter.

The world have truly lost a great member of its most dominant species of mammal.
Now there truly is a reason to fool yourself into believing there is a life after death if only to meet this fantastic journalist, author and fellow atheist. Rest In Peace Christopher Hitchens
“The only position that leaves me with no cognitive dissonance is atheism. It is not a creed. Death is certain, replacing both the siren-song of Paradise and the dread of Hell. Life on this earth, with all its mystery and beauty and pain, is then to be lived far more intensely: we stumble and get up, we are sad, confident, insecure, feel loneliness and joy and love. There is nothing more; but I want nothing more.” ―Christopher Hitchens —
@drthunder481 it's funny because he's right. And the fact that you call him a horrible human being for it just shows how wrong the world is. 1 death is a tragedy, 1 million is a statistic.
Yes, I would love to see a complete version too. Remembered watching a trailer when Prof. Dawkins talking about too much respect paid to "respect", but that part isn't in this official release.

Fry is the most superficial "intellectual" of all time. He is so easily impressed and controlled. He has very little original thought or independence. Have you ever heard Fry say ANYTHING that was not a quote from somewhere else?
The flower on Fry's chest is a poppy, for Armistice Day (November 11th), honoring those who gave their lives in World War I. The poppy is used as a symbol for the fields of Flanders, where so much blood was shed.
The flower on Fry's chest is a poppy, for Armistice Day (November 11th), honoring those who gave their lives in World War I. The poppy is used as a symbol for the fields of Flanders, where so much blood was shed.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow, Between the crosses, row on row. That mark our place; and in the sky.The larks, still bravely singing, fly. Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago. We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow. Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields.
does anyone know what the flower on Fry´s chest is? I mean, what does it stand for? if I'm not mistaken I believe that I've seen both Hitchens himself and Julian Assange wear others like that too.
Hitchens does not have cancer because he is an Atheist, he is dying because he has made some bad habits in his life, but aside that he is a very inteligent and brilliant man! hope you pull through hitch
Hitchens bought the NeoCon myth of Saddam's WMD and pimped the Zionist Wars.
aetheist Zionist = anti-Christian like his buddy Bill ZioZombie Maher
Only thing Hitchens was skeptic about is GOD, the rest of the proven pak of NeoCon lies he lapped up and reguritated to his Zionist Godless fans that are pimping Newt to bomb Iran and start WW3 for Israhell & Rothchilds
lol... who would you have on the show? Miss Erica Sullivan, mother of two, unemployed? How is having a famous guy on the show the same as celebrity worship? Grow up...
It's sad to see all those people who became famous by using their minds to see through things-loose that ability when they talk about friends--is this the way to honor The Most Critical Mind of our era-with old anecdotes and making him a sort of Jesus-who gave his life to free us from religion-Stephen Fry is a silly man who loves nothing more a the world than his own empty ego.
Apart from his views on "911 truth" for want of a better term and the second slaughter of innocent Iraqis by the west (it wasn't a war, either in 91 or 03) i agree with The Hitch and enjoy hearing him speak. Fingers crossed he pulls through.
I really hope Hitchens die this week ! English language should get a word "Hitchenism" meaning someone or something without any human qualities.
I always had respect for you Stephen Fry and still have but i don't understand how a man of your intelligence can be so narrow minded ? You are as wrong about Hitchens as you are right about Catholic Church.
There is no difference between Hitchens and Kissinger. They just used different weapon. A pen can be a bomb too .
I think I speak for everyone when I say, now that Hitch is gone there will be a little less hysterical sex in the world.

yassar arafat also called for jihad and the complete annihilation of all the jews. So not such a nice man after all. He knew taqqiya very well.
Nice talks though.

The flower on Fry's chest is a poppy, for Armistice Day (November 11th), honoring those who gave their lives in World War I. The poppy is used as a symbol for the fields of Flanders, where so much blood was shed.

@EScottAndrews

I mean, what does it stand for? if I'm not mistaken I believe that I've seen both Hitchens himself and Julian Assange wear others like that too.
pellezorz 3 months ago
Hitchens does not have cancer because he is an Atheist, he is dying because he has made some bad habits in his life, but aside that he is a very inteligent and brilliant man! hope you pull through hitch

@gamergeektwo

There is no purity in this world. Stephen Fry condemns "this cultural desert of celebrity worship" and then interviews Sean Penn?
Pass on the circle-jerk. Any of you really think Hitchens would appreciate this?
cowlark2000 3 months ago
@cowlark2000
lol... who would you have on the show? Miss Erica Sullivan, mother of two, unemployed? How is having a famous guy on the show the same as celebrity worship? Grow up...

watching this, a quote comes to mind: "Tell me who your friends are, and I will tell you who you are."
what a man, what a life
AdamBatayneh 3 months ago

I knew I admired Hitchens. Now that I learn that he enjoys PG Wodehouse, I find myself immersed in complete adoration.

A pen can be a bomb too .
mojoboy1984 3 months ago
He really should only be known by one name. The Hitchenator! And he will always be my #1 personal hero.
