That was horrible, you need to care for your vat better, there shouldn't be chunks of indigo that big, and you shouldn't need to heat it to the point that it's almost steaming!
Depends upon the crop that year, whether you get natural or synthetic or lump or powder, the source you find.... I normally buy from Brush Creek Wool Works (who are now on etsy) and they have 275 g for US$8.75.
