It's not a barrel. It's a furnace. Magnus is a vampire, and they can't stand fire or water because it burns their skin. Do your research. the furnace was strapped to Magnus as torture and punishment

Considering that when I first saw him he fell into a pool of water (which should have killed him) I think I was justified in thinking there were several of them.
