since the team that wins the Cup doesn't get to keep it forever like other proffessional sports trophys, does the winning team receive anything as compensation when they have to give it back?
@disneydanny2 just to know your name is engraved on the greatest trophy in all of sports is enough for these players, and the chance to hoist it above your head like the legends you grew up watching
It was great at the time for guys like Ken Daneyko, John Maclean, Bruce Driver, & Bobby Carpenter to raise the Cup, after they'd been with the Devils the longest & were there when NJ was horrible in their 1st few seasons in NJ. Remember when Gretzky called them a "Mickey Mouse" team? But 10 years later, the Devils were the ones laughing at the end...:-)
Because in 1995 Bettman was supportive of the attempt to move the Devils to Nashville beginning in the 95-96 season. It never happened, but there was no love for Bettman that year.
Lemieux should SO not have won the Conn Smythe! Give it to a player who deserves it like Brodeur! The Devils have won the cup 3 times and Brodeur never gets the credit he deserves!
Yeah, but the Devils lost to the Hurricanes in the first round of the playoffs last year! Still, Brodeur never gets the credit he deserves because each time the Devils won the cup, someone else got the Smythe trophy! Lemiux DID NOT deserve that! Brodeur FTW!
So you're logic is Vernon and Broduer sucked in 89 and 95 because they didn't win the MVP of the playoffs?
That's fair I guess, I should however point out that a lot of players don't win the Conn Smythe, it doesn't mean they sucked during their playoff run.
Who said they're startling? They're solid numbers.
All I said was you don't win the cup if you're goalie "sucks." Which alone refutes your statement that they did in fact suck during their respective cup runs.
Well, that still doesn't mean they sucked. And if anything that statement proves my point anyway.
Even if I were to agree that Vernon and Broduer sucked in 89 and 95, you can only cite two examples of the last 25 years of a team winning the cup with a shitty goalie? That's like .08% of the time teams had a crap goalie and won, by your logic.
I'll say it again, you don't win the Stanley Cup if your goalie blows.
yes but you also don't win it in 1995 without claude he was the most valuable player that year. brodeur was a big part but his playoffs still weren't all that good remembering he was on a trap team and other goalies playoff numbers of the era.
do you have an idea on the Kris Draper hit at all? Claude Lemieux is the most hated player ever, no matter the playoff success. Plus, he was with the Av's.
@Nwildchild claude is my uncle... i was born may 7 1995 at 7 PM... weighed 7 lbs 11oz... "777"? hah and on the day i was born claude got his hat trick... year i was born he got the cup and conn smythe... he owes me i think :D
Two of the major league sports world championship teams, the Houston Rockets and the New Jersey Devils, won their titles the hard way..without the homecourt-homeice advantage in ANY round of the playoffs..that's the true heart of a champion..a great run by both franchises in 1995..
Funny thing, I was in Manhattan the moment we won the cup. I was laughing my ass off the whole time 'til we crossed the state line in the Lincoln Tunnel. We specifically took Rt. 3 past the airlines arena to drive home along side the winners!
First time in New Jersey history that traffic was bad and everyone was honking their horns, but it was in a celebratory mood
You should have hated your own team this year then, since they basically locked it down defensively. The Rangers defense was excellent this season, not to mention very conservative (1-4 formation anyone?). But thats ok I guess since its not the Devils, right? The 1995 team was incredible. Great defense wins championships, there is no shortcuts or instant win defense styles, ask the Minnesota Wild.

why is everybody booing every time gary bettman shows his face after a stanley cup final????

because bettman is the main reason the nhl cant come to a full decision about the salary problems... and 95 was a huge year for that atually

Brodeur sucked in 1995? Jersey won the friggin cup. I'm sorry bro, but you don't win the cup if you're goalie "sucks."
That said, Lemieux absolutely deserved the Conn Smythe in 95. I hate the guy but he was a beast that year in the playoffs.
