wow that was so awesome i almost stared crying with jealousy , very outstanding creation, i could only dream of seeing that in person much less feeling that.
So, how fast are kitesurfers sailing now? I'd always been under the impression that kites were slower (soft airfoil kite designs that deform under high speed, etc.) than board-mounted sails which have a stiff leading-edge.
Im into speedkiting, and the record for kitesurfers is 102km/h (about 55knots) average over 500m, held by Tilmann Heinig of Germany, record was set on January 26th 2008 in Westerhever, Germany on the North Sea. My personal record is 36knots over 500m, Tilmanns record is purely insane, but great!
18 metric tons - an area of 1 square meter of hull underwater. Very high-tech control software to maintain 3 axis stability. Carbon structure designed by aerospace engineers. Specifications above those of fighter aircraft Rafale for beam stiffness. Buy the book by Alain Thebault ISBN 208068809X (french)
Fantastic! Congratulations to the French for their speed record.
I'm curious: I notice that in parts of the video, the sail is reefed, presumably to control the overall lift generated in order to prevent the vessel from rising to high on the foils out of the water, thereby becoming unstable. How does one keep pushing the balance of sail force vs. overall stability? Is this the key factor in pushing the records beyond 50 knots?
oh my god this is amazing... and imagine how fast it would go if they put the sail on the top (its only in the middle now) this is crazy... i love sailing!!!
i want a hydroptère =P but as far i know there are only 5 in the whole world... :(
There's still only one hydroptère, a second will be build. If you hear Hydroptère Version 5 it's just because it has been rebuild and reconfigured a few times. This project is years in the making.
UbuntoO, nice idea but it couldn't work, the inly reason this boat works is because it's made of super light carbon fibre, if it was made bigger and used to carry goods it wouldn;t be light and so couldn't get up on the foils
If this boat design was made larger with computer controlled balance, steering and sail adjustment, it could provide fast commercial transportation without fuel.
rawirig : easy to explain ! Once the boat reaches a certain speed, the foils would lift it up, thus taking the hull out of the water. This dramatically reduces the drag, the boat needs less energy to go forward and if I consider wind a a constant source of power, the boat would naturally go a lot faster.
you know that that is the worlds fastest sailboat it went 100 km rigging with the main sail half way up. Imagine how fast it would go with the main and jib nd spinicer allthe way up
Fantastic video and great music, Kau1981.

sorry, it was 50,9 knots = 94,27km/h average over 500m, Top-Speed was 102km/h.

cheesebib is idiot...
a boat has to be balanced with it's center of force, so having all the sail out doesn't necessarily mean the boat's balanced, or will go faster...
