Neo-Colonialism (rich countries/ corporations buying land to secure & access food and fuel) is in effect. In 2009 over 2.6 Million hectares have been bought in just 5 countries in Africa including Ethiopia. They then use this fertile land to grow for their food and agrofuel (sugarcane, jatropha, biofuel..) which in turn leads to more deforestation, environmental degradation and higher food costs.
