the only thing about midway that left a bitter taste in my mouth was the squadron of dive bombers flying out with the sole purpose of drawing enemy fighters leaving the carriers open,it left them open which was intended but it still dosent dimenish the brutal bloodbath of an air battle which was faught and left only 1 survivor

@AigisFan They weren't sent out with the sole intention of being a decoy or bait. They just arrived first, and without fighter cover due to navigational errors. Ironically, that coincidence may have resulted in the victory at Midway.

@AigisFan Raptor is right about the navigational errors, and figher cover was above the dive bombers so they could jump attacking Japanese fighters, so they pretty much robbed the Devastators from direct fighters support. They did it because the dive bombers are more destructive so they are crucial to the attack, aircraft carriers of the times mostly had torpedo bulges and good belt armor, but weak deck armor. So the decision of who gets cover was a tactical one, and the Devastators were unlucky

To an enemy that had never seen a jet aircraft, uch less one that goes over mach 1, that would scare me if the roles were reversed. and the napalm was so that if 1 bomb hit, it would make the flight deck unusable to launch or recover fighters.
