  • For some reason my favorite sound from EMD 710 engines is not full throttle but rather the throttle up sound that you hear at 0:29 to 0:38.

  • Union Pacific has most units equiped with auto start. Even the older EMD GP39's and such. At least in our area.

  • @verastaki yea most of the units around here have auto start, only ones without are our old sd-40's being used for switch engines.

  • @nissan300ztt I am guessing that you are hearing the turbocharger. Turbo's work a lot like jet engines, so they also sound the same.

  • I know I own a turbo charged car. And I drive a tractor trailer. Ive just never heard a diesel locomotive start up.

  • no,only DPU units have a crew,i think.

    but when a train has 2,3,or 4 engines,the crew can remote control the other unites from the first one.

  • @xXDJIndeedXx No, dpu units do not have a crew in the remote unit. They are controlled from the lead unit remotely, and operate basically like another unit in the consist except for the headlight.

  • I would consider myself lucky if a locomotive started up that easily.

    It takes up to 3 hours to get a locomotive from off, to operating condition (5 hours during the winter) around here.

  • That loco was probably left switched off only for a few hours, considering the auto start feature. Very nifty.

  • you must have no clue how cold it gets here. It takes 5 hours when it's -35 Celsius. And i say 3 on a normal day because we usually are starting up older locomotives that were in storage for years with the fluids drained. All the others are usually in constant use. (excluding maintenance time) My point is, don't think you know what your talking about. ;)

  • the traction motor controls is prolly Siemens or Alstrom. The diesel engine itself is an EMD 710. The traction motors are prolly GE made.

  • Yea its true, the SD70MAC series has a built in chip. If a certain part of the engine gets too cold it starts up on its own. It depends on how cold or hot it is that determs how long it stays on. Once the gauge builds up to say a good opperating condition it shuts itself off. Great vid man!

  • That is a Tier-2 Locomotive, you can Tell by the Flared Radiators.

  • Usually all (well maybe not all) EMD locomotives are 2-stroke. GE engines are usually 4-stroke. This EMD710 16 Cylinder engine is a 2-stroke. Hence the more smoother sound.

  • Something I forgot to mention about this UP, is that it was recently in a accident, and was being repaired. I don't know if you can see it but the whole front is bent out of whack. So no it's not in use just pretty much sitting there.

  • dude.. i don't think its a turbo. I think its probably an electric/pneumatic starter for the engine.. it just revs higher as the engine begins to fire on its own.. i think if you listen, it dies down near the end of the video and the engine continues running

  • Published information on EMD engines from 12-710G3A to 20-710G3B-EC indicates that they are ALL turbocharged.

    Being 2-strokes, they are also mechanically-scavenged, for starting & light load, until exhaust can sufficiently drive the compressor.

    This sort of arrangement is common also on really big 2-stroke turbocharged marine diesels.

    Seems that most/all EMD diesels are turbocharged in such fashion since the days of the SD-40.

  • Correct... The computer monitors air reservoir pressure, water temp, oil temp, outside air temp, and battery voltage and will start and stop the diesel engine as needed to maintain them.

  • yes they do automatically shutdown. I was filming next to a few Dash 9's and all of a sudden they just shutdown. it sounded cool...I'd put it up but i doubt people would want to see that video.

  • Its a crying shame that nobody appreciates trains like they should. Without Trains, this world would come to a stand-still. Truckers complain about Diesel prices!!! I think trucking should only be a point to point thing, where the trains would do all the long-haul work and the trucks would unload the freight at the train yard, and drive it the 20 or so miles to the warehouse. Truckers may hate me for that, but that is my opinion. And my dad used to drive a truck. Trains are Under Appreciated

  • Another thing.. Any of the truckers out there who would be effected by any job loss should automatically be awarded as a conductor or engineer at a freight company such as Union Pacific or CSX. Order a bunch more SD70ACes and train the "former" truckers to take those babies to California from New York. It would save fuel, and they might get paid more.

  • I agree,we need trains. They play a very important role in America!Yes we can take 1 Trailer across country in 5 days but a freight train can take 200 in 10 days..

    Trains can't do it all because Some customers need their freight the next day. and it would be imposible to do that with trains.Take a look at my videos, I am also a RAIL fan and a TRUCKER!

    Or maybe a Mustang convertible carry 20 thousand tonnes of coal to a power station so you have electric light at home?? How do you think most of your nations fuel is moved around so you can drive your car to go see your butt buddy?? Go figure.

    I have nothing against trains (I like pretty much anything that runs on diesel), but let's be realistic.

  • Hey. Here are many people who love Trains. As much as folks like you. Who loves airplanes cars, boats and whatever. If you don't like trains. Why bother viewing this video. I always though. Hearing a Locomotive crack up. Was an awesome sound to me.

  • Probably because it's a source of relaxation and fun to us...if we were paid to do it, as you seem to be, it would be a job too, with the hassles and problems that any job brings.

  • no argument here those big EMDS have always run good and sounded good...they crank...even an unturbocharged set of GP-9s had a distinctive rumble that could be heard for miles...

  • thats still a heck of a lot of fuel to be using up in such a time as this. Im only 14, and I want to be an engineer, but by the time im 30 the government will probably have all railroads taken out. but who knows

  • from what i remember when i drove them, at 35 mph, the engine would consume about 10 gallons every 5-10 miles or so.

  • now how much diesel in gallons  does these engines normally hold in the fuel tanks ?

  • Depending on what engine it is, around 4 or 5K.

  • ..and when you combine that with just how many tons of goods and materials these huge machines can tote, you can admire just how efficient these machines are. In comparison, an average semi-truck gets, at best 7 or 8 miles to the gallon- on diesel. An average train hauls hundreds (if not thousands) of times more than what a single 18 wheeler can anyday.

  • actually, i asked my dad who is still working for the railway and he told me that at approx 40 miles per hour the engine will consume 10 gallons every 10 miles on a fairly low grade track hauling an empty load of cars. so around a gallon a mile on an sd 90.

  • A gallon per mile empty, and I am certainly sure a fully loaded train will get considerably less fuel mileage. However, when you compare just how many tons of goods these locomotives can pull, you'll see that this economy is highly efficient. For example, how many shipping containers can an average train carry? Dozens of dozens. An average truck (at seven miles to the gallon) can only carry one.

  • oh yeah for sure, trains are extremly economical. at least 20-25 per day come through my city on both cn rail and cp rail tracks, thats hundreds of thousands tons of goods right there.

  • The Class 66 uses an EMD 12N-710G3B-T2 and the SD70M (now) uses an EMD 16-710G3C-T2.

  • SD70M's have DC traction motors. The M stands for widecab. SD70MAC's have AC motors with widecabs thus the designation SD70MAC.

  • Locomotives auto start themselves If the locmotive temperature falls under to 120 If the battery voltage falls to 63 volts or if main tank resivor falls below 110 PSIs the locmotive will start on its own if the autostart is enabled. Ever since the EPA started cracking down on emissions violations almost every locmotive nowdays has to have it to cut down on emissions. Railroads will voluntarily do it to save fuel one thing that is better than a SD70mac starting up is a GP38 Keep up the good work!

  • I was pretty far away actually, since there were workers on the yard and the Norfolk police kept riding through there was no way for me to get closer for a superior sound package! Trust me I wanted so badly to get closer I was maybe 150 ft away.
