  • I practice yang style taiji, my teacher taought that yin and yang is in every movement one way to see this is if the hands are changing yin to yang on every movement- this video doesnt depict that practice, also the movement is continuous, not stopping and starting- in this video its pretty clear that he is stopping and starting. in the fishes in 8 posture he is clearly still moving his hands after he has sunk his weight into the right leg for arn right. Too bad this wasn't kept in the "family"

  • @stacygirl1972 See how you move when you're 80.

  • Is this from his dvd? anyone know?

  • Always worth watching. A truly great master in his field! Thank you for this video!

  • cool this is the form I practice of tai chi.

  • tanks for this video relly nice

  • It' s not a random improvisation. There are several basic styles and forms from which individuals have developed their own techniques. But in each of them the movements and their order are strictly defined.

  • absolutely perfect and always worth a visit

  • Tai chi is designed to enhance our natural abilities, by teaching us to move upright and relaxed. The form teaches economical stances and movements, to insure optimal power and minimal force during an encounter. Sensitivity gained by slow repetitions, ultimately helps focus the push, lessening the need for force.

It is all about effortlessness in movement and enounters. See Fong Ha on 'Effortlessness'.

  • age does not matter, what matter as it age.... tai chi prolong what matters..

    a wise chinese saying

  • You are completely wrong sir. I started doing Tai Chi about a month ago and I can tell you from experience it is very calming and it makes me feel really relaxed after I finish a 2 hour session.

I will not argue Tai chi is a martial art because it is but it is meant to be an internal thing meaning its not really meant for fighting but could be used if necessary.

Maybe you should try it before you say things you have no place saying and no experience doing.

  • One month isn't a very long time to be talking about what Taiji is and isn't. Taijiquan is a martial art, but it has many other corollary benefits such as relaxation and improvement of health and mental state, but it is imperative to recognize that Taijiquan was created as a method for self defense both unarmed and against weapons. If we do not recognize this, then the essence of taijiquan will be lost and it will just be a dance. Which unfortunately is mostly the case in the west.

  • @mixjourneyman ,

I agree and disagree with your comment. Agree that it has many benefits for our health. Doctors recommend this form of gentle exercise, good for our muscles, bones, and ligaments, especially for our balance and relaxation. Disagree that we must incorporate the self-defense mentality while performing this art form. Yang ChenFu created this slow exercise for the benefits of general public who lack the martial arts background. That is the main key. The rest is just minor points.

  • @thane1616 ,

Excellent comments. I agree with you. :-) Lots of people also complaining that if we don't use the "application" of each taiji movement as a form of fighting style, then what we do is taiji dance. Hogwash! People may call taiji dance or taiji exercise, whatever name, the point is the practitioner benefits from this routine set tremendously. Just do it, and complain less.

  • Tai chi is for fighting. The end of discussion.

  • can anybody tell me how does tai chi works?

while performing the moves you must achieve a state of meditation aswell , right?

    thank you in advance

  • True Taijiquan involves internal centeredness and alert relaxation ("shoong"). Among other things, it is a "feeling" art based in balance of polarities and pure physics. An opponent's force is borrowed, redirected, or returned to him by the Taiji exponent's waist and is offset by the force of Earth's gravity.

  • i wonder how they come up with the movements.... is it improvisation as well or is there a book that lists all the possible movements..

anybody knows more about this? pls comment

  • This is not improvisation at all! It is always the same sequence. This is the result of hard work and practice by the ancient masters. In the book Tai Chi Chuan and Martial Applications: Advanced Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan, the author, Dr. Yang Jwing-Ming talks about this in Chapter 2:

  • A martial sequence is a combination of many techniques, constructed in the imagination of the creator to resemble a real fight (in the case of this video, the creator is Yang Lu Chan, great grandfather of Yang Zhenduo). The creator of a sequence must be an expert in the style, and experienced enough to see advantages and disadvantages of a form, technique or even just a step or stance. Within a martial sequence are hidden the secrets techniques of a specific style

  • Therefore a Chinese martial sequence has several purposes :

1.A sequence is used to preserve the essence of a style and its techniques

2.A sequence is used to train a practitioner in the particular techniques of a style

3.A sequence is used to train a students patience, endurance, and strength, as well as stances, movements and Jin (internal energy)

4.A sequence is used to help the student to build a sense of enemy

  • The Taiji sequence was created for the same these same purposes. However as an internal style, it also trains the coordination of breath with Qi, and Qi with movement. For this reason Taiji training is slow in the beginning, and then gradually it incorporates speed

  • @halilt >> Hi there ! It's not improvisation. You can find a book that lists all the movements. It's named the sequence, composed by forms. What you see on this video is the long sequence composed of 103 forms (movements). You can try to look for this book : ISBN 7-5054-0123-8. The Yang Zhenduo one. But you should ask for a teacher instead, ask for the long sequence of Yang style.

  • Very nice. YZD is getting old, though, he still has skills. Your weapon videos are cool as well. Thanks for the great footage of authentic masters.

  • I like to study and see the differences in each Yang family member and students of yang style tai chi chuan.

  • There are many small differences between Yang Jun and Yang Zhen Duo, his grandfather. Every generation makes their own flavor. That's why Yang style can look so different, but all are the same. I think the same can be said for all the styles to Taijiquan.

  • @erockemad ,

Excellent observations. I said the same with Li De Yin's flavor and his famous students. There are little differences here and there, BUT the main principles are the same.

  • I've had the honor of study with this 3rd generation Yang family Master twice in person. His taiqi is amazing, his presence is electrifying.

  • @pakuachang ,

If you can "feel" his presence WITHOUT first knowing and realizing that person is so and so (no bias formed in your mind), then that person really is amazing indeed :-)

I saw and felt many monks have this kind of presence due to their long years of cultivations. The same should be true of real masters.

  • If you don't like it, then..Why do you watch it? You don't have to watch this. Nobody is forcing you to do this. Please 8906754, show some respect.

  • If the movement and positions are ok so why are you saying that is taiji is too slow. Cannot be.

If you are really playing taiji you'ld know that slowness ("man" in chinese) is difficult to achieve.

Moreover, you should think "who am I to judge a teiji master from the Yang's familly ?"

To pratice taiji correctly you need to learn humility....

  • @8906754,

You prefer other masters' performance...that is your preference. The same with me. I prefer to watch Yang Jiao Chan's performance better than Yang Jun's. Both are excellent performers. It is just my choice. I like YZD's performance. Something about him that cannot be described "intangible factor" is there....:-)
