  • Lynott and Downey had been friends since they were kids. It must of been so hard for him. Lynott did herion, he injected in between his toes to hide it. I can't imagine how hard it would of been for Phil, he lost his wife, then his band.

  • Downey sounds very sad .. I feel sorry for him, Hes sutch a drumm legend.

  • wish ide seen them live they were one of the best bands ever .

  • The Greatest! Lest we forget, on Black Rose phill sang ive got to give it up. I was lucky i saw Lizzy live many times in the 70s and early 80s.....Splitting up was daft should never have happened As Brian Downey says we were going to record, that wont happ[en now. Grand slam were a good band, i saw them too (i have a set list, one of my most treasured possetions from Huddersfield poly, they didnt do much lizzy stuff. ) Sara is a tribute to Phill's grandma, thats the measure of the man!

  • I WISH HE NEVER DIED; MISS YOU PHIL!!!!

  • Love all your work BSF but can you adjust the date ,You have the date 1/4/86,,We here in Ireland and all of Europe take that as the 1st of April ,which is not the date Phil passed away ,,,,it would be greta if you could adjust it to read 4/1/86,,

    thx

  • @amadan9999

But 4/1/86, where I'm from, is April 1.

Anyone watching this video most likely knows when Lynott died. The date format is pretty insignificant. Besides, I can't change it on the actual video anyway, as I'd have to post a completely new video.

  • :'(

  • There are 2 days I will never forget, the day we lost Phil and the day we lost Randy Rhodes, they were both amazing to watch and very talented. thanks for posting this, and Scott was right, Phil was a visionary.

  • Thanks for all the inspiration...R.I.P. Phil you are sorely missed

  • Really sad. You can hear Downey choking back tears.

  • I was 4 going on 5 when this happened, I can for whatever reason recall hearing about this. All these years later Im a drummer and doing my thing, From one Irishman to another, thanks Phil for the music.

  • It would be impossible to ever forget Phil - what a force of nature he was!

  • Yeah i remember the night he died they played Still In Love With You on the radio...it was heartbreaking. When Scott Gorham says here that he hopes no one forgets Phil and Thin Lizzy in time to come(being 1986), you just want to tap him on the shoulder and tell him that in 24 years time they are still regarded as one of the best ever and that there has never been anyone as good as Phil Lynott since.

Thanks for putting this up blacksabfan, very interesting to hear this.

  • Man i wasn't even born at that time but he was still a fuckin legend one of the most underrated Frontmen ever

but he is a fuckin badass

  • I was 13, I remember that night.

  • The last interviewer is a royal pain! what A Wa@K#R!!!!!!!

Philo is a LEGEND! A real legend!

    R.I.P.

  • This is sad...I'll never forget this day. I met Phil and the band at the Rainbow Music Hall in Denver. Phil was such a kind guy..alot of heart. We drank some wine and talk about the books he had written. RIP Phil Lynott....

  • I will never forget when I learned that Phil had died, and it breaks my heart as much today as it did over 20 years ago. I'm still the same kid on the inside as I was back then..... But his music lives on "out in the fields" and everywhere we go!

  • I find it funny that dave fanning referred to sid vicious as so and so. They definitely wanted to keep the drugs thing quiet.

  • Phil was the greatest of all time.

  • This is a bunch of shit! Who is that dickhead DJ?... they should have been left well alone after the death of one of a great friend.. disgraceful

  • Stupid journalists. Too soon!! Leave them alone for a bit, it only just happened, god damn! RIP Phil Lynott, the Renegade. ;'(

  • Remeber the night like it was yesterday. Friday night rock show on bbc radio one had a special night for Phil and I recorded it on tape. Still got it. Whole band were interviewed. My hero. The King died that night. Still Out Here xxxxxxx

  • RIP an unforgettable musician

  • This is just brutal to listen to. Hearing how upset Brian Downey was is just heartbreaking. I hate the fact that I can never see or meet Phil, but I am kind of glad that I was introduced to Thin Lizzy with Phil already being dead. If I was alive and loved Thin Lizzy as much as I do now when Phil died, I might have broken down.

  • If Britney dies.

  • I'll never forget Thin Lizzy. Brilliant, special band.

  • R.I.P. Phil

  • Dave Fannings balls have dropped since this interview!

  • WHEN Important cultural icons die, the media representing the people who admired these heroes have a job to do jontwomey016. In my opinion this particular interview is showing respect and reverence for the great musician and entertainer. Are you saying that Brian and Scott are encouraging disrespect by being interviewed? No I don't think so. Respect to you comrade. My opinion. A great archival piece. V interesting. Love Thin Lizzy

  • this doesnt sound anything like Scott, must b the redording, and it was the evening Phil died so he must have been really upset, thanks for this, still cant believe that this guy asked Scott and Brian to go on the radio on the evening that his best friend died, so disrespectful in my opinion

  • To me this sounds exactly like Scott. He sounds just like that in any inteview of his I heard from that time. I do agree with you on the other thing you say. Really, how do you ask someone to go on radio after they just lost their best friend!

  • agreed

  • Thanks for putting this up blacksabfan.Good work.

  • Thanks again for an incredible find. You really should be the official Lizzy archivist.

  • The sound of the recording i have is much clearer and sounds right. This version is bad which doesnt give out the correct sounding of scott or dave.A bad cassette tape copied.

  • Well then feel free to post yours. If it's better I'll be happy to take this one down.

This is a recording from a cassette tape 22 years ago of a guy talking on a telephone. Sorry it's not Dolby 5.1 surround sound. Let's keep that in mind.

  • WHAT??? You're complaining about a cassette recording of a radio phone interview??? This sounds fine to me. Twat.

Amazing audio to hear. Wow, that's sad sad stuff. And I guess they were being quiet about the drug thing at the time, as this really does contradict everything that Brian and Scott in particular have said in recent interviews.

Phil was well and truly on the smack right up til the end.

  • Who's Dave? :S

  • The interviewers Leo Enright and Dave fanning also sound a little high so this would suggest that the tape is playing a little fast

I also find it odd that both Gorham and Downey would be in denial, but I suppose it was the day that Phil died they would be the last people to start a controversey and give tabloids fodder to exploit. While I would agree that perhaps Philo had maybe given up heroin his body was shutting down due the years of indulgence and neglect

    RIP Philo

  • I'm not ON anything. His voice sounds too high!

  • Maybe it's the recording but this does not sound anything like Scott Gorham!

  • It sounds exactly like him. What are you on?

  • That's kinda weird stuff for Brian and Scott to say about the drugs - sounds like they were in denial or didn't want the drugs thing to get out too much. Both of them tell a completely different story now - I don't think you could be so honest about drugs back then. A recent interview had Scott saying Phil looked awful last time he saw him, about 3 weeks before his death.

  • That's exactly why I posted it. It's amazing how their recollections have changed over time.

  • Brian Downey was very sad :(

  • wow... I though Scott sounded sad, and then I heard Brian.. wasn´t he crying? I think it sounded like that... he was breathing very hard! amazingly sad to listen to, thanks for posting this.. sad day in music history.

  • He was indeed crying; at least the guy who I received this from said he was, and I tend to agree with him. Sounded choked up to me.

  • Continued...

If you think I'm wrong just listen to songs like One Wish and Don't let him slip away. Both totally different styles of music and both awesome.

He had so much talent and I'm sure that we didn't see the best of it. His music was getting better and better all the time.

Thank you for posting this SabFan, and thanks for all of the wonderful rare stuff you have posted. It's appreciated my friend.

  • Well, that has brought a tear to my eye.

I was 17 years old when he died and I still remember it vividly.

You silly man Phil, self destructing even though you had so much to live for.

I know that it's stupid but I sometimes wonder what he would look like as he got older and wonder what sort of music he would be playing now.

I feel that splitting Thin Lizzy was the right thing to do, I think Thin Lizzy was holding Phil's talent back.

    Continued in next reply.....
