Very, very lovely. The arrangement is very different from others that I have heard, but very listenable and Mr. Hobson's voice is perfect for the song. This is the first time that I have heard him sing. I will have to hear more.
@Gullytale This is the same tempo as we heard in "The Mission," the movie for which it was first composed. I'm not sure what makes you think that it's 'way too fast.'
When singing in the operatic or classical style, David has a nice voice, but I agree with others below, this is a bit monotonous. For a fast-paced version of the song, I have to say I enjoy Anthony Callea's version with the Cantellation choir better. It has a lilting rhythmn and more power and passion. Jan Werner is best for the slow exquisite version (in my opinion).
@alphametro The music follows the composition of Ennio Moriconne entitled Gabriel's Oboe where he contrasted the western tune with the music of the Guarani Indians, as a theme for the movie "The Mission". In fact the movie itself was a contrast between a Christian who takes the humble path and a Christian who fights back in order to maintain justice.
Did I say you're supposed to sing through the throat? No. Anyway, you're wrong. You're not supposed to sing through your nose. Nasal tones are not ideal. You are supposed to sing through the firm tissues and bones above and around the nose. So yes, you must place the voice high, but it must be higher than the nose. The voice must feel as if it is resonating throughout the skull (on the high notes).
"Laryngeal" just means "Of, relating to, affecting, or near the larynx; produced in or with the larynx; glottal."
Obviously, all speech and singing are produced by the larynx. What we're talking about is the PLACEMENT of the sound created by the larynx. Pleasant, bright tones are produced by placing the voice high in the skull, where it can achieve good resonance. If the voice is placed in the nose or in its flabby surrounds, the sound is muted somewhat and doesn't sound as good.
I disagree, there is a difference between "nasality" and singing through the nose. In classical technique, one must breath through his/her own mouth and nose at the same time, and sing using the entire cavity. Nasality is more of just forcing one's sound in order to achieve a resonance, but it usually turns out to come out as this man's voice does, a bit forced and "nasal".
You may disagree, but you would be wrong. In classical technique, one breathes solely through the mouth. Why? To ensure that the palate is raised to create sufficient 'space'. Without space, the quality of the voice is significantly diminished. The classical singer breathes in through the mouth, directing the air past the roof of the mouth. To breathe in through the nose and mouth simultaneously would disrupt the process of breathing across the palate to create space.
Is this really the place to have disagreements of singing techniques? This is about David and Nella Fantasia and for my money, it is beautiful. Maybe the detractors need to see David live, in concert and in opera, then just maybe they might be qualified to comment in the negative.
Much, much too quickly. If it was too high for him (probably the reason it's faster since he wouldn't have to hold the high notes long), then lower the pitch. But it does seem as if he has a nice voice.
His singing is to fast and even a bit dull... He sings about dreaming of spirits that are always free, like the clouds that fly; it's not like he's got a train to catch. :/ I appreciate his opera voice but few singers have recorded this piece and I personally like Chloë Agnew's interpretation more(considering that she was very young when she made it). I don't think this song requires a stady rhythm, it is romantic yet lively if you put the emphasis on some parts, ritardando on the others...
An excellent video. We will be attending the Leeuwin concert next year. Could you possibly include "Anthem" from "Chess" because I know the audience will love it and it suits your persona. Harvey Boffey
i was at the melbourne voice analysis centre and met him there... i wasn't sure if it was him until i asked my speech pathologist but he had already left then...
His voice is lovely as always but I think the rhythmic background instrumentals drown him out a bit too much. Would be even better with more balanced sound.
Odd question, what exactly do you mean? BTW, this was recorded nearly four years ago, for his Cinema Paradiso album of film songs, but was included in the compilation CD drawn from his various albums - including opera - last year.
Hang the scenery, just listen to that voice!! This is my favourite track on his Cinema Paradiso CD (followed closely by Se, Gloomy Winter and Calling You).

The great thing about Hobson is that he has an operatic voice, but he doesn't sound like he's singing through his nose like so many opera singers.
MrEmpirical 3 years ago
umm you're not supposed to sing through your throat, thats dangerous, you're supposed to sing through your nose.
plus its not 'through' the nose, you place the voice high.
Hobson is awesome. his version of au fond du temple saint with teddy tahu rhodes is the best one ive ever heard.

The nasal tones are I think a choral technique. The standard operatic technique, correct me if I'm wrong, is laryngeal.
