Egress is simple, take your feet of the foot pedals and push yourself out. Rolling an open boat requires your torso to be very near the surface of the water, with shoulders parallel to the gunnel plane - think about "winding up" your upper body. Keep your t-grip underneath your sternum with the paddle extended perpendicular to the boat. Then, you might find it hard to believe, push down on the water with your forehead and then "unwind" your torso, while pulling up with your knee. You roll.
Crackers!!! he is good, when my canoe starts to tip is when I jump out! Same when we are riding 4wheelers when mine starts to lean I jump! I could not take being tied in no way no how..I have canoed hundreds of miles all senic rivers and creeks, not much white water..but this guy knows his stuff. I have learned a lot watching him..
I hope those leg straps have some kind of quick release system or else how the heck do you get out if you have to??!! In kayaking it's simple pull of the release loop on the skirt. This looks more complicatated and buckles and mechanical devices can jam up. A very dangerous situation when underwater!!
@tecnolover2642: My thoughts exactly. I've gotten my leg caught in the thigh straps in rapids when I've eaten it and as a result I've just removed the straps till I can come up with a single quick-release buckle for my boat. Open boating takes skill which is long in coming.
Getting out of a playboat is way easier than it looks. You have foot pedals that you use to push yourself up and into the straps. If you slide back more than an inch (easily done by relaxing your feet) the straps become quite loose.
If your still worried, most straps do have quick releases. If not, you can buy a quick release clip similar to those used on ww rescue belts, cut the webbing in a good spot for the buckle and feed the webbing through.
Wow! Amazing. Thanks for sharing all the canoe tips here. In Borneo we're not able to find anyone who can instruct us. Do you have a DVD where you compile everything? If so, where can we by one?
Very nice, smooth technique. It's all in the hips!

The knee, leg, foot supports are really essential -- as well as the added buoyancy with the air bags --- EXCELLENT SKILLS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@GenonUK Wow! And I thought I was something because I can dive out of a canoe and get back in without tipping it over.
Very nice!
