I wanted to allow it to see color...but Lego introduced the NXT 2 and the color sensor about a year after this project was done. Good luck on your project though!
One thing that this video doesn't show that we added later: we made the robot send telemetry over bluetooth to a laptop. It sent estimates of travel distance and turn angles, and we plotted its movement on the screen during our class presentation, to show the inaccuracies in the robot's senses.
We only managed via bluetooth driving distance from the phone or another robot. But before you see us far away ...

I am currently working on a similar program. But it is difficult to yours.
It allows you to distinguish colors and move the robot not only on the black road, but also in other colors.
