Very importantly the Persians were greatly weakened after hundreds of years of wars with Rome and keeping barbarian tribes from Central Asia at bay. This caused heavy tax levies on the population who grew weary of the wars and the Arab faith was not so different to their own to keep fighting.

Persia had to secure borders the size of the United States. Much of the Roman empire was the mediterranean which could be covered by ships. The Eastern lands also had far more dangerous foes including Huns, Mongoloid tribes, Turkic tribes, and many others that proved so devastating to the West later.

Second largest due to aggressive expansion. Zoroastrianism was a choice, it wasn't forced upon the people. The only reason arabs succeeded as much as they did was because the persians were weakened by their wars with rome/byzantines. The arabs had it easy. @shubroto81 To be correct, it wasn't a handful of Arabs but hordes of arabicized troops over decades. They weren't defeating the Persians in battle outright but with hit and run engagements. Very importantly the Persians were greatly weakened after hundreds of years of wars with Rome and keeping barbarian tribes from Central Asia at bay. This caused heavy tax levies on the population who grew weary of the wars and the Arab faith was not so different to their own to keep fighting.

The word "barbarian" was a Greek term which referred to people who spoke a different tongue (i.e., "bar-bar" = modern equivalent would be "blah blah", meaning don't understand). The Greeks hardly thought the Persians were uncivilized. They WERE first world for that time. They had cities with 2 million people in them, highways, architecture, high civilization, highest standard of living.

From India to greece, fron Egypt to southwestern china, which were about 8~12 Mil Km2. And in the Sassanid empire retook Egypt, Babylonia and Israel from the romans, Persia was the world's first superpower! Then later Selecuids, Romans, Mongols and so on.

@WolfytheWolf5667 This is confusing. The Persians ruled lands far beyond their homeland just as the Romans had. The only difference is that the "east" is much much larger than the mediterranean. Persia had to secure borders the size of the United States. Much of the Roman empire was the mediterranean which could be covered by ships. The Eastern lands also had far more dangerous foes including Huns, Mongoloid tribes, Turkic tribes, and many others that proved so devastating to the West later.

The Persians were thousands of miles from Greece (the equivalent of the USA launching war in Vietnam). For the record, the Persians did rule lands in the West including Macedonia, Thrace, and regions up the Danube River. The Persians also ruled lands in Africa including Egypt, Libya, and Ethiopia.

LOL I've seen this man's documentary on the Battle of Alesia, and it was full of holes., just like this documentary. The Persians were diverse, but the Romans were too. Like Greece for the West, Persian culture has been enormously influential, particularly as the bridge between east and west. As a military power, they held sway for 1200 years. Everyone has their day. Greece hasn't had power in 2300 years since Alexander really. Rome put an end to them. The Italians? The Dutch? Who are they? The Brits? Weren't they a superpower?
