@77plugser Actually his direction was great the lighting and effects are amazing and the actors give great performances and let's not forget the xmen films which dipped without bryan singer.give more of a reason rather than saying he sucked.
@mayhem9024 Well Superman Returns is often called the death of Bryan Singer's career by critics and many movie goers alike. He tries to do these over dramatic deep emotional scenes that are just terrible. The only reason the x-men movies made any decent money was from there already large fan base that wanted to see them on the big screen. Personally, I can't stand his style of directing, The Usual Suspect wasn't bad , but as time went on he got worse and worse right up to this epic fail.
@77plugser No it isn't infact it still holds a certified fresh by critics and audeinces on rotten tomatoes with more critics enjoying it than batman begins. And the xmen films also got critical acclaim with his second film still being called one of the best superhero films in history. If you dislike singer then just say it but to sell the mans work and the respect he has in the industry isn't cool.
@mayhem9024 Tthe general movie public and critics are constantly bashing superman returns, Why do you think they signed Brandon Routh on for 3 movies, yet now they are rebooting it? Because SR was a flop in most ppls opinion. No one wanted to see Singer make another superman movie. If you think Rotten tomatoes is the be all and end all of movie citic history you obviously know nothing about the movie industry. Rotten tomatoes is a site for very few critics and a few ppl to write their thoughts.
@77plugser Actually it wasn't a flop a flop wouldn't have made back it's budget the problem was singer wanted to do a big action movie that time but they didn't want to pay him for it.And actually the studio heads said the returns were good just not the blockbuster they wanted but oddly enough star trek is considered the second biggest success of 09 and it made less.
Another thing bro chill out your really starting get rude here because rt is a combination of written thoughts of people but the critics part is made up of reviews from newspapers(small and big). Also superman took home the majority of awards at the biggest scifi and comic awards show with the best film.Look i'm trying to respect your opinion here and treat all your points with respect but so far all you've done frankly is say my points aren't true and give your opinion and not the facts.
@mayhem9024 well I say your points are untrue cuz some are, it is not rude to state facts and truth. You said SR got a better rating than Batman Begins on RT correct? It didn't if you look at the site. Once again it is fact that Singer and Routh were signed on for 3 superman movies. So why are they rebooting the franchise and letting the contracts with Singer and Routh expire? Answer-The majority did not want another Singer Superman, that is the reason and fact, sorry if the truth offends you.
@77plugser Actually they were signed for 3 films but singer pushed it back for valkryie and then dropped out because of budget concerns afterwards the writters along with the entire crew went with him.It was like the spiderman 4 thing it had nothing to do with reception they were going to go anyway it was the crew that left. And also the majority also gave it numerous awards and a better rating on rotten tomatoes than batman has top critics wise.To say the majority isn't factual.
@mayhem9024 it's clear that Batman Begins got a higher rating than SR from audiences and critics alike on any site for movie critiquing including rotten tomatoes. His x-men movies were ok but not what i would call good. they make what any popular action comic book movie usually does. But don't try to insult nolan comparing him to singer. He took a batman from Mr. Freeze to Epicness! The first movie reinvigorated batman franchise and TDK broke records, Singers movies will never come that close.
@77plugser begins holds 60 rating from critics returns has an 76 and they're audince reception was of slightly. His xmen films caused the rebirth of superhero films and also if you don't like singer ok but stop trying to make his work sound bad again x2 is considered one of the best sequels ever and has an reception close to dark knights.I like nolan but his batman begins film is actually a bunch of batman stories with a new character.TDK broke records but wb admitted ledger helped sell it.
@mayhem9024 Well last i checked BB got an 85 rating on RT and SR got 76, so i don't know if you have checked it lately but that is what it is right now. You must just be looking at top critics. Well ledger may have bumped up sales from his death but the movie was rated above any movie Singer has done. All in all, Some like singer some don't, But even he realizes SR was badly done and wishes he could redo it. Just search it on splash page.mtv.com
@77plugser Actually it bumped up after dark knight came out but it wasn't always that I know that much. And dark knight is higher than alot of films but as I said that's mainly because of ledgers amazing performance something nolan doesn't deserve credit for.And he said that he wanted more action he didn't say it was badly done but that and i quote "we should have put more action in for the young male crowd".Any filmaker admits mistakes even speilberg has issues with jaws.
@77plugser Another thing you said it was the death of his career yet he still making movies and also those overly dramatic scenes were highly praised the critism was mainly at routh and bosworth who failed at they're jobs.
@mayhem9024 Well it was quoted by some critics that we didn't hear much from him after SR. Nolan does improve with each film and his lowest rated film was in the 70's so... I like nolan but i am not a die hard fan for him, but i think he deffinitley is in a higher class than Singer, and I think his movie reviews show that. Singer fully admitted if u read the article that he would completely redo SR. And the fact is WB was not happy with the direction of SR so they stopped it, look it up.
@77plugser Actually you could look up something from me for once and you'll see that the writters and singer both left and infact the sequl even afterwards was still listed as in production by warners in 2009.And also singers lowest rated films weren't written by him.And he admitted he'd redo it with more action not the whole film because I have read the article and other ones from singer.
@mayhem9024 But you obviously are a Singer fan, I guess i can respect that, you have stated some true facts but some that were not so true. As far as BB, i don't know why that movie entered the conversation but have you actually read the negative reviews by some of the top critics? Most of them thought BB was a prequel to Tim Burtons movies, Other critics are known for giving Dragonball evolution a fresh rating, that should tell you something about how dependable some of their ratings are.
@77plugser As have you or should I bring up the whole "death of singers career" when he's got 4 movies in production two of which are bg budget and one that came out this year to great reviews(x men first class)And not all of them thought it was a prequel and that's a generalzation of them. And also judging someones film taste that way doesn't work hell empire strikes back was considered terrible when it was first released.
@mayhem9024 well death of singers career is a quote from critics. And Singer wasn't a director (thank God) for x-men first class, just a screen writer, so it turned out pretty good. But whateve's You keep enjoying your singer movies and i'll keep avoiding most of them lol, I do watch em to see if he can make a turnaround imo, but still hasn't impressed me yet
@77plugser And yet, partly because of him, the superhero movie genre was reborn in 2000. If "X-Men" flopped, it would have solidified what critics and studios were saying after the failure of "Batman & Robin", that superhero movies were "out of fashion".
Look, "Superman Returns" did not live up to the hype, but you have to be an idiot to call Singer a bad director. "The Usual Suspects" is a brilliant film, "Valkyrie" is extremely underrated, and "X-Men 2" is fantastic.
@ShadesAtKnight Well i believe you have to be an idiot to like Bryan Singer, x-2 was ok but i had no desire to see it again. And x-men the first movie was so boring i almost fell asleep in the theater. That fight scene at the end was horribly done with magneto, sabre tooth, wolverine and storm with toad, oh man that made me puke. "What happens to a toad when it is struck by lightning.... the same thing that happens to everything else" Worst line ever!! U.S was good i will give you that though.
@77plugser You just said he made an "ok" film & a "good" film. How does that make him the "worst director"? There are some directors who go through their entire careers without making even ONE good film.
Yes, the "struck by lightening" line is a shit line, & Berry is a terrible Storm, but it's the only argument you fools have against the first "X-Men" film. Further proof you have no idea what you're talking about. Get out of your mother's basement & take a filmmaking course or something, kid.
@ShadesAtKnight the fight scenes were badly put together, There was little attachment made to the character's & audience except wolverine. Rogue and cyclopse (2 major character leads in the comics) were poorly represented and acted. Singer bored the hell outta audiences. Not bad on the look and atmosphere of his movies,( a big budget helps) but it is sad when you come out of a movie knowing it could have been so much better. Perhaps i dislike him cuz he I love x-men and he gave me a crap story
@ShadesAtKnight oh and how many film making courses have you taken? Seriously, If you pride yourself on knowing so much about film and you tell me i need to take a class, you must definitely have gone through some schooling. As far as Singer goes, yes some new life was breathed into action comic movies after x-men cuz he made a serious film instead of a comedy/flop like Batman and Robin. But It wasn't cuz of Singer, It was c uz thats the way FOX wanted it made, any director can follow orders.
As for "X-Men", yes, Cyclops (that's how his name is spelt) was poorly written. But Singer didn't bore the hell out of audiences, hence the reason the film received a sequel, and hense the superhero genre was reborn. And way to ruin your argument. So now your saying "X-Men" wasn't made the way Singer wanted, but the way Fox told him to make it. And I said Singer was "partly" to thank. It takes many people to make movies, especially of this scale.
@ShadesAtKnight Wellthen you must know everything there is to know about film making then, or what pleases audiences. Well seeing as at this point you're trying to insult spelling, when i type fast and could care less about a mistake in my spelling, you really have nothing to say in the end. It is my opinion that singer is not that good of a big budget director. Yes FOX does say they want it serious or more comedic or whatever, but it is up to singer to produce and direct a good movie. like I...
@ShadesAtKnight ... said any other big budget director could have done the same, doesn't mean it is that good, and although critics were in favor of it i know so many personally and online that were disappointed with the x-men movies, but thats beside the point. SR was just plain awful, imo, yea ok the lighting was good, some of the acting was good, but the dialogue was severely limited for the movies main character, and the story was a rehash of the 1978 version. the list goes on.
@ShadesAtKnight ... you can't argue with the fact the Singer hasn't been asked to reboot the superman franchise, basically the studio saw that it wasn't going in the right direction so they put a halt to it, and let Singer's contract expire. This is something I agree with, but i know in your mind it doesn't matter what anyone thinks unless they have gone to school for it, you've revealed that arrogant attitude already, so there's really no use talking to u.
@77plugser I never said you needed a film education to know what you're talking about, but you're acting as if you could've made a better Superman film than Singer.
I'm not saying everyone on the planet earth loved Singer's X-Men films. As a giant X-Men fan myself, I definitely would have done some things differently, and by no means are they a perfect representation of the source material. But you're shitting on "X-Men" as if it had no impact on cinema, and it did.
@77plugser LOL i love ppl who assume everything. Assume your life away man. Assume i live in my parents basement and i am a kid, go ahead. It's ppl like you that get duped by everything in life. Worst director isn't to be taken literally, I am sure there are directors out that that are way worse i know. But as far as big budget films go, Singer knows some stuff and his earlier work wasn't to bad, and yes he is a better director than me and you, but x-1 had a horrible story, terrible dialogue...
Inception was a kick ass movie... too bad this Superman wasn't as good as it should've been. I hope the new one coming out will be better
