My goodness, what did we lose, when Whitney checked out just a scant few years ago. Her loss to drugs and her recent death cannot erase a career, however short, that was graced by one of the greatest voices popular music has ever known. As I watch her singing her heart out to an incredibly appreciative audience made up primarily of military personnel, I see the fabulous accompaniment of pianist/songwriter, Bette Sussman. Whitney brought the best out of many collaborators, but best her own voice.
smh.. dam it whitney sang that song.. and thru out all her "mess" the good, bad, and indifferent (as we all have) god never took her gift away.. her annointing.. he will never leave us or foresake us
This is my favorite song ever, and my favorite performance of the song ever. Donny's original is a classic that can't be touched, but Whitney took this to a whole nother level of SANGIN. If this didn't bring you to tears or stir you in some way, pray for your soul!
@joeshmoe005 The reason she sweats is because she's HOT. That's what people do when they're hot. If she was on drugs at this time, then this performance would've been terrible. A lot of singers sweat when performing. No one is perfect. You should really be ashamed of yourself
@joeshmoe005 No she's not a saint, NEVER WAS. Your comment was ignorant. If she was on drugs during this time, then this performance would have sucked. THE WORLD knows she had problems with substance abuse. What's the purpose of coming on youtube and assuming that she was under the influence during this performance? When people perform they usually SWEAT, especially when performing more than 1 song. I'm sure it was very hot in that arena because people in the audience were fanning themselves.
@brandenmcghee lol your anger is laughable. it's a fact that she was a drug addict and her entourage has even admitted that she couldn't get through a performance without it. your point makes no sense, without getting high she wouldn't gone through withdrawal and her performance would have suffered. notice how in the beginning of her career, she was never sweaty during EVERY performance.
@joeshmoe005 Do you even know what her drugs of choice were? The drugs that she was taking wouldn't allow her to give a good performance. Allegations of drug abuse didn't come about until the LATE 1990's/EARLY 2000's. This performance took place in 1991 when she still had the "Good Girl" image and before she married Bobby Brown. She didn't always use drugs and this performance was before her career took a turn for the worse. So know your facts
@brandenmcghee You are so right!!! These people are so crazy. It's amazing how so many of them suddenly are experts on drugs & alcohol and can speak on what she should, woulda and could have done. As if they really know what her life was about!!! SICKENING!!!
@teenawil i don't think anyone's claiming to be an expert on addiction, but i think that since whitney has passed too many people try to justify her drug use or glorify her life. admittedly, she was an amazing singer, but she was also an addict who made some terrible choices. drugs are very dangerous and no matter how talented she was, it doesn't make her drug choice ok
@joeshmoe005 she always sweats when she sings. A true fan knows, that most of them she will have a white cloth/napkin every time she sings. I've been so many places.. where Whitney sings while holding a white cloth. No. stop with the drug crap. We get it. She died because of prescribed drug mixed with alcohol, which pretty much what most people these days take on daily basis.
@cepacol06 you know why she's always sweated? cause she's been on drugs most of her life. and that's sad that you're trying to justify her drug use. i think the lesson to take from her untimely end is that drugs are very dangerous. it's sad to see the loss of such a great talent, but her talent does not justify her poor life choices.
@RamajX that's true but all singers perform under hot lights and use a lot of energy, but do you see any of them sweating like them when they're just standing?
@joeshmoe005 actually yes. Most of my work is in theatre, and we do sweat when just standing haha. Have you seen this entire concert? It was a long show. So she didn't just grab a seat and start singing.
@RamajX hmm seems like your love of her music has clouded your judgement. i'm also a big fan of hers, but regardless of whether her sweating in this video was the result of drug use, she was definitely smoking crack during this time. did you not see those photos of crack in her hotel room?
Whitney Houston always put the joy of the Lord in the despair of her life and in whatever she sung which brought so many out of their sadness in whatever she sung about that they were going through. Amazing Grace she brought to the stage and to her life and everyone else's. Faith the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen. Amen!
Truly a sad loss. What's worse is that some people feel weird about all the coverage compared to loss of our soldiers. We must live in a "what have you done for me lately society now". She was a national treasure. In the eighties, she was a hero to those of us who grew up then.
That's what I want to do. Sing to make a nation rise, not for attention. That reminds me to say the first shall be last and the last shall be first. I call myself last.
Generous. She was singing FOR you. Not AT you. Whitney's high notes and licks/runs drew attention to the lyrics, not to herself. I preached this for many years before she died. Yes, there are some good artists out now. But most are definitely singing for the attention, not to make people feel loved. Ryan Tedder, Clarkson, Adele, Hudson...they get it. Well...I just miss her.
@VocalEdgeTV Yes, all those you named are quite talented. But they do not come near the luminosity of Whitney's talent. With her passing we'll be able to assess just how special she was. Thank heavens we had her this long.
Whitney was an amazing talent and soul and I love her for that. Heaven is so fortunate to have her as part of their amazing choir. She'll be sorely missed. Bobby-Christina, please hang in there. May God give you the true strength you need to pull through this one. I know your mommy was the best thing in your life and you understood her more than anyone. Peace be with you. I'll pray for you right now.
I don't want to completely blame Bobby for Whitney's demons but she needed someone in her life who didn't promote her demons but help remove them from her life and Bobby was not that person. Whitney needed someone strong, confident, about their own abilities and talents and who was there to make her stronger. Again, Bobby was not that person. He was jealous and insecure of Whitney.
SING IT, Whitney!! R.I.P., dear Angel! The BEST interpretation of this gorgeous & oft-covered song by Leon Russell. The pianist here BLOWS ME AWAY, too! And the sax adds just the right colors, enhancing this Divine Instrument that is Whitney Houston's voice. We miss you, Whitney. Many of us are hip to the darker evils of the Illuminati-controlled music industry that took you. Michael, Amy, 2pac & so many more, gone before your Time.
I agree that when the black community didn't accept her, that it hurt her deeply and then it seemed she spent the next years trying to be as black as possible to get acceptance. I believe some of the wrong choices she made including having anything at all to do with that lowlife Bobby Brown was a result of her efforts to be more black. Bobby Brown has his defenders but he was a lowlife street urchin as far as I am concerned.
@winsome1235 if you are on the outside looking in ...you cannot be judge and jury, whitney was wild before bobby dont blame him for her downfalls, she was a grown woman and way older than him....its painful when you lose someone so talented.. but we all have our own demons...
@winsome1235 You're insane! Why say something like this when there's no truth to this at all. Most like your white! Whitney was always accepted by her people and they've never turned their backs on her. You're trying to promote division about a race of people you don't understand but that's what hateful people like yourself try everyday. If you can't say someone to bring peace or love into the world then don't say anything. Keep your hate to yourself and watch how it consumes you!
It's really a shame that once Whitney was booed by her own people when she began which I am sure hurt her deeply as at the Soul Train Award. Seeing her sing this song so powerfully just hurts even more deeply because her talent was so immense.
Whitney, how many goose bumps erupt on me when you sing. Not possible to count. Your place in music history is secure. You were among the greatest voices that ever blessed the planet. Rest well sweet girl!
@ Norda, please study the bible for yourself, to be approve unto God, a workman rightly dividing the word of truth. Everything you said is NOT scripture. When you a child of God to be absent from this old body is to be present with the Lord. Christians don't die they just go to sleep. Waiting for that resurrected perfect eternal body.
whitney is responsible for her own drug problems. don't blame bobby, tho he was bad for her in that regard in that he didn't do anything to stop her (bad company likes bad company). don't blame chaka. Fo you think that anyone influenced whitney to do drugs? she did it on her own and couldn't control it. But you heard her interview with Oprah. She was NOT HAPPY IN HER LIFE AND MARRIAGE. So she made the choice to use drugs as an escape. Sad and unfortunate but not uncommon all over the world
@jamardjk I'm not attacking her. I was a making a point to those who are attacking Chaka for what she said and those that want to attack and blame it all on Bobby Brown. She was doing drugs long before she met Bobby. That's all I meant. She was a great singer.
Hey i saw one of comments, i just wanne point out that whitney did not do drugs before she met bobby! whitney met bobby 1989, she started doing drugs between 1991-92. Just wanted to clear that out.
@Arbnor55 Thank you for saying that..It made me kinda upset when Jennifer Holliday went on TV and claimed she was using b/f Bobby I was like uhh. She didn't meet him till 89' and didn't start using until the Bodyguard...I believe they met at the Grammy's or uhh AMA's?!! Can't remember. I mean you can't make no one use but let's be real here...He was a big influence on her starting for sure IMO!
@Arbnor55 As soon as the 90s came through its like everything changed about her. Image and all when she married him...I was like what the hell?! I wonder how things would have turned out if she hadn't married BB...Who knows. I didn't know he had an overdose on heroin in the early 2000's! Damn. R.I.P Whitney. I pray her soul is resting and she is at peace because she surely deserves it...
@DenzLife You're right about one thing, she's not responsible for anything, not anymore. And NO, she is NOT singing for God at this time. As for God's words say, the dead know nothing and remember nothing. The dead can not praise God. They are gone physically and in a deep spiritual sleep with absolutely no conscience of anything that ever happened. So no, she is not singing anywhere, and Nno, she is not in heaven. She, like everyone that ever died, is no more until God's day of judgement.
AND WHEN MY LIFE IS OVER,REMEBER WHEN WE WERE TOGETHER... she sung it... TOO BOBBI CHRISTINA AND FAMILY, REMEMBER ALL THE GOOD YOU'LL GET THROUGH THE SAD. WHITNEY'S MUSIC LIVES FOREVER.
u know Chaka Khan had me ready to slap the shit outta her old bloated sausage looking ass. she kept insinuating that Whitney was difficult and hard headed about drugs. in the 70's chaka was a SERIOUS heroin addict. her and Natalie Cole were junkies. at least whitney didn't shoot dope in her veins, chakas a pig. she even criticized whitney for re-making her song Im Every Woman.
@xchethomasx Thank you for saying that. I am a big fan of Chaka Khan, but she was definitely the wrong influence for a young Whitney Houston during those years in the late 80's and early 90's. I never knew they were friends. That was bad news to me. She even admitted that she, Whitney and Bobby were sitting around the table doing drugs in the 90's. Notice they cut the interview short after that. Lucky that she's now sober, but it took her years and years to get clean.
@xchethomasx So because you don't like what Chaka said, you result to insulting her appearance. How grown up of you. Chaka was one of the few people to publicly slam that sham 'tribute' party hosted by Clive Davis in the same hotel, while Whitney's body was still in the hotel. If anything Chaka kept it real, cause you can be sure the gutter press are gonna go to town on every skeleton in Whitney's closet as soon as the funeral is over. They're already at it.
@xchethomasx If you wanna direct you indignance at someone how about starting with that ritual celebration in the hotel where Clive and a host of celebrities were partying in the disguise of a 'tribute'.
@bolder2009 just because chaka khan SAYS she didn't attend; doesn't mean she didn't. her mouth is no prayer book. and why on earth would clive davis care about whitney? its not as if he could make any more money off of her. but, so what if chaka criticized him publicly; she probably already had a gripe with him about something and chose to use this platform to air her grievances. be real. chaka went apeshit in the media when whitney did a remake of her "im every woman" song. old jealous ass
I loved her voice in this era. It had matured, without going as deep as it did in Bodyguard and beyond. It's horrible to think that there's no hope of her ever getting this back! Ugh. She was a true, REAL vocalist. We only have Mariah now, and I doubt she'll return to her 'belting days' when she didn't mime or 'whisper'.
My God! My God! This woman was so amazing! My tears are still falling, but I know God knows best! She must have been tired and needed rest and peace. So, Beautiful Whitney til thy rapture soul shall find rest beyond the river... RIP
No-other singer could outperform Whitney when she was like this total professional. and an incredible talent. Whitney Thankyou. you set the bar high.gave us incredible music.and have inspired so many newer singers, all want to sing like you but non have. x
There is no one better than her. She held nothing back and that is what made her so powerful and inspirational. I will always remember her. Her nickname 'The Voice' is an understatement. We lost a wonderful performer and my sympathies to her family and friends and anyone who was touched by her music like I've been. -3

I have seen a lot of Whitney performances, but this is truly my favorite ... We have truly lost the greatest female vocalist of all time and my prayer is that we as a whole will continue to remember Whitney Houston. Forget all the negative and focus on the positive. Whitney's voice represented purity and there will never be a replacement. We have a lot of talented female vocalists but Whitney definitely is, not was, the greatest!!!!
God needed yet another beautifully talented singer for his heavenly choir..he took one of our ultimate best...through her music we will always have her, memories of us all over the world and fondly based, R.I.P. Whitney, goodnight angel x
@Randoms763 Thank you for what you wrote. It brought tears to my eyes. I love Whitney SO much. I cannot believe she is no longer here with us. She is truly amazing & i am so thankful we had her for as long as we did. She is absolutely phenomenal- full of heart and soul & oh what a heavenly voice
my favourite song of all-time, by my favourite singer who is now at peace with herself....she has left a legacy which cannot be equelled....when God created Whitney he rested.....Whitney was given the ULTIMATE package......her talent has left the world a better place....R.I.P Whitney....
What a gift! God truly blessed her with extra and she turned it into extraordinary. May she rest in the bossom of the Master for eternity. I pray that God gives her family peace as they go through this storm of saying see you later. They will see each other again .
Rest in Peace Miss Houston. You are now in heaven with many legends and many remakes. Thank you Donny Hathaway for bringing this to the AA Community and thank you to the many others who have done covers of this song and made it their own. Thank you Mister Leon Russell for this beautiful song. RIP to not just Whitney but to an unsung legend, Mister Donny Hathaway. You are sorely missed
Something other wordly. God bless her family at this time. We are all so very thankful for the gift she shared with us year after year and decade after decade. She now belongs to the universe.
before every singer of mediocre talent (and many of the better ones) started taping and post-editing their "live" vocals, there was WHITNEY HOUSTON, LIVE in a kickass muthafucking green sherbert romper, sweating her ass off to sing it theatrically, but from the heart. REST IN PEACE, GIRL!
As a professional singer, I've been singing Whitney songs for years. She is the one woman who influenced me most in pop music. She looked like an angel when she sang. Devastated she left us the way she did. Her voice is like no other. Many blessings Whitney. We will always love you...
RIP Whitney - Thank you for being a positive, beautiful, powerful representation of a black woman for all the little girls who grew up in the 1980s and 1990s.
Very sad news of the passing of one of the greatest voices ever and the greatest voice of my generation. So very often copied but never bettered .over the 3 decades I had the opportunity to see her live 4times .The first 3 times were just fantastic the best vocals by far I've ever heard but the last time at the O2 area London 25th April 2010 . It was like seeing a shadow of the former shows and seeing a ghost of the greatest female superstar I've ever had the privilege to see.I remember that
This song has always been my favoriOe and her version is absolutely electrifying!!! I will continue listen to it in memory of her there will be "No OTHER" like her!!!!!!

R.I.P DONNY AND WHITNEY
hershysquirts187 2 weeks ago
whitney is responsible for her own drug problems. don't blame bobby, tho he was bad for her in that regard in that he didn't do anything to stop her (bad company likes bad company). don't blame chaka. Fo you think that anyone influenced whitney to do drugs? she did it on her own and couldn't control it. But you heard her interview with Oprah. She was NOT HAPPY IN HER LIFE AND MARRIAGE. So she made the choice to use drugs as an escape. Sad and unfortunate but not uncommon all over the world
nordna 2 weeks ago
@nordna shes gone leave her the fuck alone
jamardjk 2 weeks ago
@jamardjk I'm not attacking her. I was a making a point to those who are attacking Chaka for what she said and those that want to attack and blame it all on Bobby Brown. She was doing drugs long before she met Bobby. That's all I meant. She was a great singer.
nordna 1 week ago
Hey i saw one of comments, i just wanne point out that whitney did not do drugs before she met bobby! whitney met bobby 1989, she started doing drugs between 1991-92. Just wanted to clear that out.
Arbnor55 1 week ago
@Arbnor55 Thank you for saying that..It made me kinda upset when Jennifer Holliday went on TV and claimed she was using b/f Bobby I was like uhh. She didn't meet him till 89' and didn't start using until the Bodyguard...I believe they met at the Grammy's or uhh AMA's?!! Can't remember. I mean you can't make no one use but let's be real here...He was a big influence on her starting for sure IMO!
DeishaGuy 1 week ago
@Arbnor55 As soon as the 90s came through its like everything changed about her. Image and all when she married him...I was like what the hell?! I wonder how things would have turned out if she hadn't married BB...Who knows. I didn't know he had an overdose on heroin in the early 2000's! Damn. R.I.P Whitney. I pray her soul is resting and she is at peace because she surely deserves it...
DeishaGuy 1 week ago
@nordna All the evidence is that BB was a miserable influence on her and he treated her like shit.
Loejyrrab 1 week ago
@nordna she's not responsible for anything now including singing for ingrates, but instead NOW singing for God....
DenzLife 2 weeks ago
@DenzLife You're right about one thing, she's not responsible for anything, not anymore. And NO, she is NOT singing for God at this time. As for God's words say, the dead know nothing and remember nothing. The dead can not praise God. They are gone physically and in a deep spiritual sleep with absolutely no conscience of anything that ever happened. So no, she is not singing anywhere, and Nno, she is not in heaven. She, like everyone that ever died, is no more until God's day of judgement.
nordna 1 week ago
@nordna Absent from the body is present with the Lord for the believer, so I believe that she's in God's presence right now.

u know Chaka Khan had me ready to slap the shit outta her old bloated sausage looking ass. she kept insinuating that Whitney was difficult and hard headed about drugs. in the 70's chaka was a SERIOUS heroin addict. her and Natalie Cole were junkies. at least whitney didn't shoot dope in her veins, chakas a pig. she even criticized whitney for re-making her song Im Every Woman.
xchethomasx 2 weeks ago
@xchethomasx Thank you for saying that. I am a big fan of Chaka Khan, but she was definitely the wrong influence for a young Whitney Houston during those years in the late 80's and early 90's. I never knew they were friends. That was bad news to me. She even admitted that she, Whitney and Bobby were sitting around the table doing drugs in the 90's. Notice they cut the interview short after that. Lucky that she's now sober, but it took her years and years to get clean.
winsome1235 2 weeks ago
@winsome1235 that's crazy! exactly! she was talking as if she was never involved with the same life problems as whitney.

They're already at it.
bolder2009 2 weeks ago
@xchethomasx If you wanna direct you indignance at someone how about starting with that ritual celebration in the hotel where Clive and a host of celebrities were partying in the disguise of a 'tribute'.
bolder2009 2 weeks ago
@bolder2009 just because chaka khan SAYS she didn't attend; doesn't mean she didn't. her mouth is no prayer book. and why on earth would clive davis care about whitney? its not as if he could make any more money off of her. but, so what if chaka criticized him publicly; she probably already had a gripe with him about something and chose to use this platform to air her grievances. be real. chaka went apeshit in the media when whitney did a remake of her "im every woman" song. old jealous ass
xchethomasx 2 weeks ago
One of her best live performances. Gives me chills
SuperSunnydaisy 2 weeks ago 3
I loved her voice in this era. It had matured, without going as deep as it did in Bodyguard and beyond. It's horrible to think that there's no hope of her ever getting this back! Ugh. She was a true, REAL vocalist. We only have Mariah now, and I doubt she'll return to her 'belting days' when she didn't mime or 'whisper'.
