Fucking love this movie. I saw it when I was really young, 7 or 8 I think. My friend's dad had a ton of Heavy Metal magazines and the movie, which we would steal and watch. The magazines were fucking weird too. There was one that I remember had a woman tied down to a table being fucked by a bunch of tiny little green aliens. Pretty wild stuff to find when you're that young.
If I had the money and the space shuttle were still flying, this is how I would choose to have my funeral. Dropped out of the shuttle in a space suit in a vette.
Speaking of which it did influenced Fifth Element you know and was one of the influences to James cameron's Avatar since JC is a fan of HM the movie and comic magazine as he did borrowed some elements of both for his movie. If you like this one i recommend Akira, Ghost in The Shell, Twilight Zone The Movie, Ninja Scroll, Wicked City, Wizards, LightYears, Creepshow, Fire and Ice, Willow, Fantastic Planet, , Urotsukidoji Legend of the Overfiend, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind etc.
Do you agree with me that Fifth Element and Avatar are the closet movies of being like HM in live-action? Luc Besson and James Cameron are huge fans of this movie and the magazine comics. Cameron did combined Last of the Mohicans and HM in one movie as there are similarites to Den and Taarna in his movie and HM Magazine influences such as the landscape, exotic strange world, half-naked alien chicks, warriors, weird creatures, storyline and that kind of thing
Who else saw this on TBS in the early 90's? i did in 93 when i was 12 with Vampire Hunter D, Robot Carnival, American Pop, Hey Good Looking and Rock and Rule. I loved them and had to own them except AP and HM weren't on video at that time until 1996 and 1998 as i bought them, i even taped Rock and Rule and Hey Good Looking from one of my video stores. I also owned VHD and RC.
Me too, you a fan of HM too? i'm 29 and adored this movie since i was 12 back in 93 with those movies i mentioned in my comment. If you like this movie, i recommend these similar movies: Akira, Ghost in The Shell, Ninja Scroll, Fritz The Cat, Heavy Traffic, Fire and Ice, Wizards, Fantastic Planet, The Fifth Element, Wicked City, Vampire Hunter D 1 & 2, South Park The Movie, Urotsukidoji Legend of the Overfiend, Pink Floyd's The Wall, Fist of the North Star, Princess Mononoke etc.
Well there's a new HM movie coming soon with 10 stories this time and different animation in each one like 2D handdrawn, CGI, Clay, Stop Motion, flash and anime in each one. Director's like James Cameron, Guillermo Del Toro, David Fincher, Zack Snyder, Gore Verbinski, Jack Black and Rob Zombie will helm it! they should hire the creator of Ninja Scroll/Wicked City Yoshiatka Kawajari or Katushiro Otomo of Akira fame for a segment as well as Will Vinton for claymation.
Do you think Taarna is a hot toon? she's up there with Cheetara from Thundercats, Adora from She-Ra, Jasmine, Teela from He-Man, Scarlett from GI Joe, Teegra from Fire and Ice, Jessica Rabbit and other animated hotties you gotta admit.
She looks actually more humanoid than part cat as she's more like a spot skinned woman with yellow skin and has great looks, hell i even remembered when i was 17 in the late 90's when i was rewatching the show on Toonami i rewatched that first episode where she was naked and gave me some dirty fantasies. Let's not forget Demona from Gargoyles? one kinky monster babe that i also had fantasies when i was 13 when that show came out.
How old were you when you saw this movie? i was 12 back in 93 on TBS with Vampire Hunter D, Rock and Rule, American Pop and Robot Carnival as they rocked my world as i bought HM on video at 15 then at 19 after gradution i replaced it with the DVD and owned the soundtrack. Gotta admit The Fifth Element and Avatar were the closet movies in being live-action HM magazine issues.
But it's true Fifth Element and Avatar are like Heavy Metal with Fifth Element being like Harry Canyon/Taarna stories combined and Avatar like Den/Taarna stories combined.
More similar movies to Heavy Metal i recommend are: Cowboy Bebop The Movie, Avatar, Twilight Zone The Movie, Creepshow, Metropolis (2001 animated), Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds (a.k.a. Warriors of the Wind), Willow, The Dark Crystal, Phantasm, Conan The Barbarian, Robot Carnival, Haunted World of El Superbeasto, Rock and Rule, Lightyears, Flash Gordon, Barbarella, Starchaser Legend of Orin, The Neverending Story, Sin City, 300, Watchmen, Princess Bride, Beowulf, Krull, Highlander
It's called radar rider by Riggs... don't even bother searching about them it won't even show on wikipedia ....how ever if you type in Jerry Riggs it will tell how he had a band called Riggs but not much but bottom line is it's called radar rider
I was too young to buy the magazine at the time so I used to get homeless guys to buy them for me in exchange for money to buy them a drink. When the movie came out I just had to see it so me and some friends camped out by the rear exits of the theater and walked right in. Saw this intro alone and stopped regretting what I did to go see it... served the theater right, they refused to sell me a ticket, and it was a personal requirement to see it!!!
When watching the beginning I was like...okay. But once the song started, I was like "Fuck yeah." The scene was still weird to me, but the music made it epic. I loved it right away.
I agree the 1981 Heavy Metal soundtrack is put together very well. Riggs was lucky to be able to have two songs on this movie. Thank you for posting a comment
@monkeymagoo47 This is a little late .. But I disagree . This song is cool , But I really think Don Felder's song Heavy Metal -Takin' a Ride would have fit this slot better and vice versa This song played during the B17 scene . But it is only an opinion . Loved the movie I saw it at the theater when it first came out . Planing on buying the DVD

this is one of my favorite movies of all time
up there with the 5th element, shawshank redemption, they live, pulp fiction and the matrix
I love all the different visual styles, the total immersion and how real the characters feel
I like how each character has or appear to have a very rich backstory
like the one-eyed thug in the future new york scene
future new york, the immense space station, the ship by the stoner and Den's world all appear to be distilled from a much larger story
