the correct response to one of the hip hop artist that sampled this song would be Pharoahe Monch feat. Talib Kweli and Common 'The Truth' produced by Diamond D(D.I.T.C). KRS 1 sampled Luchi DeJesus's 'Round Midnight' and that was produced by Showbiz also of D.I.T.C. fame.
@timjmoran The main rock band consisted of Fast Eddie Hoh on drums, Art Stavro on bass, Chip Martin on rhythm guitar. The strings and harps are comprised of Carolyn Willis and Edna Wright. Jacqueline May Allen is the soprano. Pete Drake plays pedal steel guitar. Charlie Musselwhite plays harp, Barry Goldberg is the organ player. Graham Bond plays piano. There are two conga players. One is Armando Peraza. I forget who the sax player is.

@willruddock Jazz artist Shorty Rogers did some of Harvey Mandels arrangements either on this album or another similar. This was a stunning version...i recall when i 1st heard it i was expecting Harvey's guitar to come through blazing at some point.
@blacknickelson i agree with you that Mr NIGGER BAITER is an offensive name. makes me wonder what kind of life this person lives. because the internet is anonymous this will happen. but we must continue to allow this and all freedom of speech. once we begin to limit expression of thought we become the very thing our founding fathers fought against. more importantly, we neglect the very title of the music to which we are all connected...CHRIST REDEEMER.
@cudgecat i m sorry , i dont mean to be offensive...i agree with you on what you say, but what does our founding fathers mean??? do you direct the issue of free speech to the "founding fathers" of the united states? are you insinuating that it is their prerogative and the fruit of their intellectual labour? because if you do it is offensive and false...if you dont, i m sorry for my remark
@Vales23 i believe there is a misunderstanding here. my reply was directed toward the individual known as "blacknickelson". but to respond to your point, you are quite right in that the founders of american government had no monopoly on the idea of freedom. they themselves acknowledged the ancient societies of greece, rome, and israel as being their inspiration and examples. i too don't mean to be offensive. i welcome your response.
@Vales23 eponymous is the right word for a song that gave the album its tittle. Or when the band and the album (or even a song) have the same name (happens sometimes with 1st album - see Talk Talk for example.
I remember many nights of listening to this in my bedroom. What a stark contrast for Harvey between playing this fabulous rendition of Christo Redentor and let's say... uh his cranked version of Peruvian Flake! Hah!
This is the one Edward Bear used to play nightly on KSAN in San Francisco 40 years ago. He used to let some cool DJ who went to LA take his tapes with him(Bobby Ocean or {Tommy Somebody not Donohue}). That was before Reagan ruined California then America. May God have mercy on his troubled soul.
@mrniggerbaiter You are right on, boss. The other DJ is Tommy Saunders. Back then it was Harvey, Charlie Musselwhite, Barry Goldberg, Eddie Hoh, and friends jammin' at the various SF venues of the day. I went to the Matrix.
rogerrrubin said it was Tommy Saunders, who is going to have to be okay with me. I remember Tommy Saunders from KYA,and I had thought,he was in the Bay Area most of his career. Looking it up on Wikipedia,I wouldn't be groping. I kind of remember Thom Davis, and I quite remember Big Tommy D,announcing his following day opening of KSAN at the Santa Clara Fairgrounds. It could have been Thom Davis. I think ,I'll go look them up.
Could tsomeone tell me if this is the original? I've listened t a number of these tracks (Donald Bird, Bill McGee, Bobby Watson and David 'Fathead' Newman) and absolutely love them.
Of the ones versions I've mentioned I think the Donald Bird version predates the rest but does Donald Bird pre-date Harvey Mandell or not? Thanks for any help you can give.
@KillerInstinct2006 Having just listen to both of them.. I actually prefer this one to the Donald Byrd one and I like Donald Byrd. Just like the female harmonies on this one more haunting like an Irish banshee. anyways thats my 2cents
It still haunts me 40 years after I first heard it. Listening to it now and it's almost possible to reach back and grasp 1969. Amazing what a song like this can do (to your head, as we might have said then.)
Oh boy one of my favorites. This piece always said "It's going to be OK. Peace is possible." The cover is still a standout, the lion's paw going over the edge. Thanks Harvey.
There was this radio station in LA that would always play this song around 2:00AM and it would fit into whatever mood you were in. And if you'd done a little herb it would make an entirely new mood for you! Great song.
Certainly one of the great musical minds from the 60s. When I first heard this album I fell in ove with his music. I have been looking for this album ever since. I owned it once but lost it.
