Respect to the theologian in the audience, he was at least communicating on the same intellectual level as Dawkins... he should of been brought out of the audience to interview Dawkins instead of the dumb host, who was deliberately bating Dawkins.
With the argument of, so yeah we've explained the big bang, but how do you explain where that came from? Well that's simple, you're thinking in terms of cause and effect. So religion has basically said that in order for everything to have been created, there must have been a cause. However, in order for there to be a cause and effect, there must be time, before the big bang there simply was no time, therefore there was no cause.
i love how dawkins only gives the audience two choices: no God-your reasonable, there is a God-your sadly deluded. in this way aethisim is falling into the trap organised religion has for years, it's dividing humanity and with division comes contempt. it all depends on personal points of view. what is God? supernatural man or ambigous spirit propelling nature? what is science-facts, and if so what are facts-are they always tangible, and if not, isn't religion non-tangible also?
Whyis Tubridy being so antagonistic towards him? This man is one of the greatest minds of our time, and Tubridy talks down to him in the most irritating manner. Once again out of his shallow depth as an interviewer
I suggest to the viewers of this to watch on youtube the video THE ELEGANT UNIVERSE; in it top scientists explain in an easy way the origins of this universe without the need for any god. To believe in any god at the present time is for ignorant people like in the old days when they believed in the rain god because they did not understand the water cycle, now even children understand that cycle and that god is gone.
I think in light of recent developments such as the Cloyne report and Enda Kenny's truly remarkable speech to the Irish Parliament following said report, perhaps we need to get the audience back together and have a new show of hands... just a thought...
@TheNormankingdom Well, I think you're wrong actually, and I think there has been something of a sea change in terms of Irish Catholic perceptions of late.
But don't let me get in the way of your crass xenophobic generalisations, by any means.
Dead-to-the-spirit deluded "God Delusion" author & blithering fool scientist goon Richard Dawkins another "leader" given 2 the profane masses is another useful idiot 4 Jesuit machinations
Jesuitical; pertaining to the Jesuits or their principals; designing; cunning; deceitful; prevaricating
The Jesuit Order completely altered the education system 2 suit their Evo-Hoax Agenda 2 discredit the Bible
Papal Rome cant have their Counter Reformation 2nd Dark Age DESPOTISM until Bible is destroyed
Every time I've approached a question, in this case the possible future of humankind, & I come up with an answer, in this case that we'll probably go extinct but science & technology give us the possibility of of avoiding extinction, I find out that Richard Bloody Dawkins already had the answer.
Holy crap, an interview with Richard Dawkins devolves into Catholic priest babble time? Geez....
And what the hell does this mean (from the priest): "we're not talking about the god of Christianity, of the Old Testament, we're talking about a god at the level of pure reason"?????
I dont get how a priest can say their belief in evolution doesnt render their belief in the bible as incorrect. If the Bible is the word of God, then Genesis is the word of God, yet if someone believes in evolution, then they believe that Genesis and therefore the word of God is untrue
I like the comment at the end as regards the evouloution of humans in the future, tha if it were down to "historic" brain size and "infant numbers" then we'd progress, but thats not quite what he said...
Why does that priest talk like a machine gun with no natural pauses between sentences or phrases, and doesn't even end a sentence before starting a new one? He sounds like he has some kind of speech deficiency. And why does he choose to wear a CONSTANT fake unnatural smile?
@shwwnn Christian people smile all the time to recruit followers. "oh my, he's quite happy, isn't he. He must be living a fantastic life". Most child molesters would be smiling if they were outside the reach of the law. (I know, I know.. Low blow..)
Dawkin's view for the future lack's an ounce of creative thinking. He's assuming that evolution continues on its current trajectory. He should take a second to consider the implications of Moore's Law.

@1simonmatthews : Depending on how old you are you might just witness it. Even though you think it is unlikely, I would contend you are completely wrong. If science is good at anything, it is achieving that of which it is said to be impossible/science fiction. I recommend watching the series "Through the wormhole" season 1 & 2. Scientific progress is often far more advanced than the general public think it is and what happends at the front is extraordinairy to say the least.
@pinkdeath82 Yeah I've seen Through The Wormhole, not sure what season it was but there were about 8 episodes. I still don't think they will fabricate a robot that is consciously aware of itself, not with the current methods of computer technology. It doesn't matter how complicated and fast a computer gets, it won't be self aware. But that's just my opinion. If they do make something that is conscious then I'd guess they used something that had that potential from nature in the first place.
@1simonmatthews : Oh, not with the current computers. I think it would take 8 million laptops for that. However, there have been some major breakthroughs which season 2 touches upon.
@pinkdeath82 Cool I'll take a look at season 2. But 8 million laptops wouldn't be any more self aware or conscious than 1 laptop. I think consciousness comes in levels - ie. from the consciousness of a worm up to the consciousness of mankind. At what point would laptops become conscious? Exactly 8 million? Or would there be a rising level of consciousness with the more laptops you add? With that logic, even 1 laptop must have a certain level of consciousness, but it doesn't. Neither would 8 mil.
@1simonmatthews : 8 million laptops would be required to re-create the human brain. If you're only after base conciousness I am sure we're not far off. We might already have done it.
@pinkdeath82 I strongly disagree. Maybe with 8 million laptops you could have something that could mimic a human brain, but it wouldn't actually be conscious. It wouldn't be aware of itself. You could put sensors on it to sense touch and send signals to it's CPU to let it know that it was touching something, but it wouldn't experience that sensation like we do. In my opinion, science is nowhere near understanding this. I'll wait for the proof, which I'm quite confident won't come any time soon.
lovely to watch the priest and Richard, but the interviewr had a chance to talk to these to great interesting minds, and instead he made a fool of himself...
What a civil conversation about science and religion. No yelling, no screaming, no overly-defensive douchebags calling the other side names. Why can't people in the United States behave in a similar fashion when discussing this in public? Makes the Irish look damn good, I'd say.
If God says every knee will bow - He means will acknowledge Jesus as God. I have an artificial knee so I understand your point. God's ways are not our ways so we can not understand them all with our reasoning. All I am saying is search for the truth because your eternal life depends on it. I would rather trust in God than a man like Dawkins for my eternal salvation.
@reallyocean Says Wiki - The word-concept Soul has a secular and non-secular aspect. To integrate the two in a coherent statement Soul would be defined as: The interaction of mind, body and spirit reflecting through conscience the appropriateness of individual or collective behavior. Through a connection to the Soul the mind apprehends abstractions implicit in spirit whether that be of transcendent derivation or temporal analysis.
1. the principle of life, feeling, thought, and action in humans, regarded as a distinct entity separate from the body, and commonly held to be separable in existence from the body; the spiritual part of humans as distinct from the physical part.
2. the spiritual part of humans regarded in its moral aspect, or as believed to survive death and be subject to happiness or misery in a life to come: arguing the immortality of the soul.
@reallyocean That is the same soul - your essence, your spirit, your heart - your very mind - the YOU in your body of flesh and bone! You can't say you don't have one or you would be just a mass of bone, flesh and cells. :) :) lol
@laurian27453 I'm making a distinction between what most Christians consider a "soul," which I believe as something eternal that goes on after one's dead and must be saved, as opposed to what you're talking about. I don't believe in the former definition of 'soul.' If you want to call our personality and anything that makes us the person we are, that's fine and I believe in a soul in that sense, but there is nothing eternal/forever about my soul. When I die, my 'soul' ceases to exist as well.
@reallyocean How can you be SO sure? Could it not be that there is a power that wants you to believe that? A power so subtle and deceiving, that even you - an intelligent and good person - would beleive a lie? The skill behind deception is - that the deceived is unaware.
@laurian27453 Well of course I can't be sure that a power like that doesn't exist but number one, there is no evidence proving or even alluding to its existence, two, just because an idea can be imagined doesn't mean people should believe it.
@reallyocean Well the evidence is all around you - evil men, wars, money grabbing, adulterous, law breaking etc, etc, You can be sure but maybe you would prefer not to know - sadly not knowing is not the bliss you think it is. But the knowing is true bliss as it frees you from all fear - even the fear of death.
@laurian27453 Since you believe in the Judeo-Christian Bible, it's very heart warming to see somebody who classifies themselves a Christian realize that Yahweh is deceiving people to believe differently than what will get them into heaven. Very nice to see at least one person can admit it. Oh, and it's up to the person believing in Adam and Eve, talking snakes, virgin birth, and the resurrection of a dead god to give evidence of their claims, not me
@Revenwazhere I was referring to Lucifer the father of lies. Well if you read and thought on all of what the bible shows you, the evidence for Creation and all the information God has given you, that tells you how everything started and how everything finishes, you would find it not just overwhelming but so factual it could not be denied. Still you have to find that out for yourself - don't leave it too late though for death comes to us all, we don't know when and after that - THE Judgement.
@laurian27453 Oh trust me on this. I have read the entirity of the bible. If you had, you would realize how fucked up your Yahweh is. You would realize that Yahweh is just a "petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser, a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully." i can name many verses within the bible that show the evil of Yahweh. (Cont.)
@Revenwazhere Jesus faced a mob that was eager to execute a woman caught in adultery. He put a stop to it with a simple challenge: anyone who has no sin in their life should step forward and throw the first stone.
John 8.7 “ So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
That part of the bible is only found in later additions and was put there by scribes making copies. The earliest versions of the gospels do not contain it. In short that means that it did not actually happen and is fabricated. Go look up Bart Erhman a major biblical scholar that knows a great deal about how the bible was formed. See if you can still believe it after watching that. However I believe science alone should have been enough to persuade you.
@Elu112 Sorry but I DO have a knowledge of my bible. I am not sure what perversions you are referring to but my bible is completely infallable. Trusted and true, pure and undefiled from the original languages through to English - God is amazing - He preserves His word. Let God be true and EVERY man a lier. Blessings.
@Elu112 If the bible says it happened then I believe it . Yes lying is a sin and I try not to sin but until I am perfect in an incorruptable body in Eternity - the blood Jesus shed on the cross covers my sin - He paid the price for me as He loved me so much to die for me.I am forgiven.
Likewise you too are a sinner and He loves you too and died for you, would you not like to be forgiven for all the sins you have committed?
@laurian27453 The only person that has the right to forgive you is the one you commit the wrong doing to. Only a coward prays for forgiveness from god instead of confronting the actual person you did wrong to. If you did wrong only to yourself then ask yourself for forgiveness. But if you did not do any wrong to anyone, why then ask for forgiveness?
@rqm797 EXACTLY ! We have ALL committed a wrong to God/Jesus by breaking His laws that no man can keep, therefore we should say sorry to Him and ask for forgiveness. Therefore we should repent and turn from our wicked ways - you and me included.
@laurian27453 "We have all committed a wrong to god"? are you kidding me.. No wonder religious nuts do evil things, because they just pray to god after and they think they are then forgiven. please do yourself a favor and seek professional help.
@laurian27453 Ah i see you are 58 years old. I'm sure you have done many wrong things to many different people and it would be almost impossible to ask for forgiveness from any of them. You should try and seek the people you actually hurt and ask for forgiveness and then forgive yourself afterwords. But if you think for one second you can simply ask god to forgive you for all the wrongs you have committed against others and that makes everything ok, then you are delusional.
@laurian27453 (Cont.) Also, I have no clue what evidence you are talking about, you would have to be extremely foolish to believe that the bible has any actual evidence of its credibility. Either the so called "evidence" is so vague that it can be interpreted any way, or it has none at all. Plain and simple. You are truly the first person I've ever seen on the internet who has actual said the bible has any actual, credible evidence behind it.
@Revenwazhere Well the first of many evidences lie in the prophecy of Israel being a Nation again and that many Nations will come against her. As has and is happening. That Israel will be a fertile land and not the arid land it was not so long ago.
@laurian27453 Please tell me your kidding. PLEASE. I beg of you. There's no way you're being serious. It's impossible. Nobody can actually be that silly with their beliefs. Nobody.
Unfortunately, Dawkins never gets to answer the audience member's question about the cosmic singularity and the origins of the universe. What the gentleman in the audience apparantly fails to recognize is the fact he is replacing one unknown with another, or to be more precise adding an additional unknown to an unknown. If we have yet to explain the origin of the universe, how does including a creating entity, who's origin is also not known, add any explanitory value? It doesn't.
Every knee WILL bow and every tongue WILL confess Jesus Christ is Lord. Even Dawkins will have to do that at some time, so he may as well do it now before its too late and he ends up in the lake of fire.
@laurian27453 What happens to the poor souls who don't have knees, or have artificial knees or have deformed or misshapen tongues, or the truly cursed man with both no knees and no tongue?
I weep for those poor arthritic and lisp ridden might-as-well-be-heathens bound for fire eternal.
Should that murderer not be forgiven? Entry to Heaven - an eternal life is only by believing in Jesus Christ, he says I am the door. You can not get fairer than the method of entry not being down to us BUT down to God - Jesus Christ who died, was buried and rose from the dead for you and for me. he is comming back for those who believe in Him and the rest will be judged by Him.
@laurian27453 should a murderer be forgiven? why is it up to god? what about the victim and their family? they're the ones who have been wronged not god, I'd be pissed if god forgave my child's murderer and gave him eternal life in heaven.
If Dawkins lived a good life and was a good man and did not believe in the Son of God or that there was NO God - why would he even want to go to Heaven and why should he enter Heaven? If he had ALL the credentials in the world to enter heaven would he not boast of them? And what of the humble person who failed to be as good as him - stole some bread - does he not get to go there too? What happens to the murderer who was tormented so much he killed a person but later was repentant & remorsefull?
@brigidthescourage Dawkins is just stating that there is no evidence of God, which is why he is an atheist. There's no reason to believe in the "God of the gaps", where anything we can't explain, we can just say that God did it, and leave it as it is. If we were to do this 800 years ago, we would be stuck in the Dark Ages.
How sad - such a deluded man - he has no hope for the future. When he does die he will find out there IS a God and he will face the judgement of that God. He has a chance now to accept the gift of Eternal concious life in paradise by believing in the Lord Jesus - His death, resurection and soon return. If not his eternal life will be spent in the lake of Fire with conscious torment. He is so arrogant and self-centred. Please pray for him. God is patient and long-suffering.
and if your god is benevolent, and that dawkins did not do anything imoral through his life and did good unto others, then he should be fine.
But if he led a good life and yet got punished only because he did not believe, then that is not a god. that is a monarch. a tyrant. And i'd no sooner go to hell than bend over for a tyrant.
The show of hands in this video may be an indication of just how superstitious we as a species tend to be. Since dimwits have more kids than intelligent people, in the long run we as a species may well be screwed.
I like his explanation of how we might evolve in the future and the correlation of brain size. Relating to intelligence, it is not our job to out populate the dumb people, but to increase their education. If we can educate the bottom of intelligence, and the best of such continue reproduction... it may be slower but it still works. One person can not mold the world in his image, but through disseminating his knowledge, the world will do so on its own; if it lives long enough.
I must say kudos to the priest, out of all of the videos of Dawkins that I have seen on youtube, he presents one of the most well informed and coherent arguements against atheism. Ryan Tubridy on the other hand is a disrespectful fool.
@epilp88 i know ya made dis comment months ago but you got me tinkin. If we wanted to examine the efficacy of science wat wud we do? first we'd make a hypothesis, right, that either science works as a system of ascertaining knowledge or it doesn't, agreed? well how are we going to do this? well you would examine the evidence, and see if it does right? you'd weigh up the facts that are infront of you and try to prove it wrong. This is the scientific method. science examineing science? just a tawt
Well, he crucially did not respond to the man's question. The problem with naturalism as an ontology is the same with the any other: it is ultimately circular. "Science" as a human practice doesn't and cannot make ontological claims about reality; it is neutral. If the argument for naturalism is not to be circular, it cannot simply say that science as a practice works, since that science is compatible with non-naturalisms of various kinds.
this old guys grin means he just wanted to match it with THE DAWK for a bit. he knew he was gonna get slammed but wanted the experience of it. dare i say it, GOD love him :)
Ryan Tubridy is an idiot. I am incensed by the treatment that Richard Dawkins received in this interview. Tubridy devoted almost the whole interview to the subject of atheism, which is a side issue to the subject of evolution. If he wanted to do this interview, he should have taken over the show sooner. He came across as disinterested, closed minded and hostile and I thought that Dawkins did very well not to explode.
@truthiness2010 IF the priest had been the presenter and the interviewer, it would have been far more interesting.
Tubridy was close minded, boring and hostile. He bullies his interviewers, he bullies women and he bullies kids. He is a horrible human being, and a horrible presenter, and interviewer.
Never told us about the book, acted unprofessional, and was a jerk.
I'm theist, I believe in a diety, it is personal to me. I will not force it on anyone, but I will discuss other things.
By the way, has anyone seen idiocracy its a movie about what might happen now that idiots are producing babies by the bucketfull but smart people are being more careful.
First of all i am irish. Second of all i would like you to acknowledge the fact that a lot of the people who watch the late late show are elderly and do not have the same beliefs as the younger generation who are a lot less religious. Tubirdy was probably talking about the god dellusion more than the new book because he knows that some people in ireland are very conservative and not because he is ignorant himself
@fnsuper I find your generalisation ignorant and false. False, because in the OECD educational rankings we rank 17th, above the UK, France, Denmark and Italy. False, because many famous inventors and even one Nobel Prize winning physicist have been Irish. Ignorant, because you do not know any of this and you have instead chosen to propogate a common misconception with no evidence. If you take on your beliefs in this way, I would suggest joining a religion; any of them would be glad to have you.
I gotta say that priest seems actually really smart in comparison to pretty much every1 else in audience+host. Host just pisses me off. Priest tries to explain his reasoning and brings up why he believes them. Would actually like to see him debate Dawkins. Would be a lot better debate than Dawkins usually gets I think.
Tubridy is an idiot!! It's an insult to Dawkins to be interviewed by such ignorance. Could have at least read the book he's trying to promote and kept the interview on topic!!
This guy in the audience doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about. Science IS based on knowledge and not on belief. He's bringing in the old God of the Gaps argument, which has been used throughout history as evidence for Thor and Saturn, which NO ONE BELIEVES IN ANYMORE. Just because science can't answer a particular question TODAY, obviously doesn't mean it will never be answered, as history has shown time and time again. The evidence is there, people are just retarded.
@Dpesh7 its a serious problem. we live in a shallow society in the west which vilifies intellectualism, and promotes idiocy - hence 90% of the internet. Voters cared more about how much Bush loved Jesus then how little he knew of foreign policy, and so he won.
The only way things can change is for society to recognize this failing. most people are too ignorant to even know.
Poor Ryan Tubridy exposes himself as a complete amateur, completely over-ruled by emotion and his personal opinion and interjecting constantly to turn the argument against Dawkins. Very poor interviewing.
the tail end of his argument for evolution, and anti-creationism is: intelligent people must reproduce to evolve into a more intelligent species....this flies in the face of his own book, of RANDOM chance, and RANDOM addition of information to the genome...this guys a tool, and people believe him because of his tone, and attitude...he is spinning the same circle argument he has dedicated his adult life to refuting.
@MrMohjong i think hawkings anti-god posture is newfound, he was in the same camp as einstein for a while, in believing in a god, but not and all-inclusive one.
@TyTrig It has been argued that Einstein and even Hawking were a type of Pantheist, using the term God as metaphoric or possibly a synonym for the mysteries of the universe and they actually didn't believe in God as a person or thing. That's all well recorded fact.
I hate when tards like that guy think and act like they are so damn clever. Look at his doofy smile afterward and his disingenuous acknowledgement of what Dawkins is saying. My question to that man is this: where did the force that brought about the fruit come from? (ad infinitum).
@bpbusstop amercia is inthe dark ages it is filled with nothing but ingorrant people who deny evolution but argee with the idea of a man using magic made the world in six days BOLLOCKS
@bpbusstop If it wasn't for atheists and deists the world would still be dwelling in caves.
The fundamentalists religious idealogues are the ones ruining our world.
Men like DaVinci, Copernicus, Galileo, Descartes, Kepler and most famously Isaac Newton (without him we wouldn't have been able to put a man in space ) where all religious but where more deist, the had a belief in God but thought that analyzing the natural world would unlock the secrets of life not blind prayer.
You say that will only happen if the smartest people have the majority of the children.
But you forget, If the Smart people only mate with other intelligent people, that there would be 2 totally different species... Humans can branch off into multiple species similar to what you teach about other primates.
Tubridy's a fuckin tosspot.. He's clearly done no research into Dawkins before he came on and just laughed off Dawkins' claims as if he was a nutjob. He's a joke
So are you saying you haven't done research on Dawkins? If so, why are you commenting on something you know nothing about? Also, you're being unnecessarily cryptical here.. what do you mean "intelligence material and therefore superficial"?
@goonerballs First of all tell us what your cryptic "Tubridy's a fuckin tosspot" means. Are YOU commenting on someone you know nothing about? I know it is crass to mimic a statement however you really do present very strange commentary.
whats sad is that one of the smartest men on evolution just basically told us that because the dumb superstitious rednecks are having the most kids... theirs a good chance that we will fail to continue to evolve as intelligent beings... ugh...
@raztis1 What elitist bullshit. If you understood the value of life you would realize that such misplaced "intelligence"does not equate to any sustainable advantage.
I am amazed at how bigoted people can be just because they have been the product of a very fortunate birth. Think before you post.
@hdregmore first off, the last thing anyone can call me or my life is elitist. i was homeless at 17, making less than 20k a year till i was 25. The FACT is, is that animals evolve based on what animal is reproducing the most. in nature, it is always the smartest, or fastest, the one that doesnt die as much. With humans, it has now become the lazy, uncaring baby factories that produce while the most intelligent are careful when deciding to bring life into the world.
@raztis1 What rubbish, just because people embrace life and decide to have children you call them "lazy". The fact is that people like you do not have many children because you are so self centred and have no time for them. That is the evolutionary process in action, survival of the compassionate. You say that intelligence is somehow linked to family size which is quite an absurd notion.
Daffy Dawkins is put in his place by a simple yet wise man. Biologists should stick to their little field and leave the big questions to the bigger thinkers .
" Daffy Dawkins is put in his place by a simple yet wise man. "
The argument for god that the "simple yet wise man" gave is that the world is littered with evidence of him. Wow. What a compelling and original argument. And the guy accepts evolution. Too bad natural selection doesn't weed out morons like you so that our species can evolved to become less superstitious.
@pokermaster54 I am amazed that the eugenics programs initiated by atheists in the US early last century hasn't eliminated the stupidity gene that you obviously still have. You could try a frontal lobotomy, that might help. As long as "wise men" are around dickheads like you will always be put in their place.
"I am amazed that the eugenics programs initiated by atheists in the US early last century hasn't eliminated the stupidity gene that you obviously still have."
I'm stupid since I don't find "proof of god is in nature and his presence is everywhere" to be a compelling argument for the existence of god? I seriously don't understand how you can possibly think that that is a strong argument. Rational discussion is way out of your realm.
@pokermaster54 if you insist on being extremely limited in your perception then you can have that position. You talk of "realms" but deny the existence of them. If you do not find God present in the wonders of nature then you are indeed on your own. Even Einstein accepted that much and I believe that he was capable of rational discussion. Or do you deny him as well? Your thinking process has obviously reduced it's confines to that of your own tiny existence. Quite sad really.
"If you do not find God present in the wonders of nature"
You keeping saying that but you don't give any concrete examples. Because any example you give is based on intuition. "Well this thing is very complex. In every day life I know that complex things are made by intelligent beings like us. Therefore a superhuman must have made this". That's the same intuition that lead us to say "How can the world be round? If that is so how come people on the other side don't fall off?"
When it comes to things outside of our everyday experience we can't apply our intuition to approximate the truth. History provess that. It's so obvious. How can you keep relying on intuition to answer life's most difficult questions that are outside of our daily experience?
Intuition is born out of common daily experience. And the small minded have always used it to solve questions that are beyond our normal experience. I would pity you if you weren't so annoying.
@pokermaster54 Is this post in reply to me or are you just talking to yourself? You have written quite a lot, but said absolutely nothing. Perhaps it is an attempt at philosophical thinking, but it has come across as just drivel. I really do not know what your point is, please make one.

After reading the comments here, I'm reminded of Monty Python's Argument Clinic sketch...arguing for the sake of arguing.

Holy crap, an interview with Richard Dawkins devolves into Catholic priest babble time? Geez....
And what the hell does this mean (from the priest): "we're not talking about the god of Christianity, of the Old Testament, we're talking about a god at the level of pure reason"?????

That ended up as a talk about theology, i don't think Dawkins managed to get out more than 10 words about his new book.

I dont get how a priest can say their belief in evolution doesnt render their belief in the bible as incorrect. If the Bible is the word of God, then Genesis is the word of God, yet if someone believes in evolution, then they believe that Genesis and therefore the word of God is untrue

I want to see man fabricate a robot that is conscious. I don't think they can do it.
1simonmatthews 6 months ago
@1simonmatthews : Depending on how old you are you might just witness it. Even though you think it is unlikely, I would contend you are completely wrong. If science is good at anything, it is achieving that of which it is said to be impossible/science fiction. I recommend watching the series "Through the wormhole" season 1 & 2. Scientific progress is often far more advanced than the general public think it is and what happends at the front is extraordinairy to say the least.
pinkdeath82 6 months ago
@pinkdeath82 Yeah I've seen Through The Wormhole, not sure what season it was but there were about 8 episodes. I still don't think they will fabricate a robot that is consciously aware of itself, not with the current methods of computer technology. It doesn't matter how complicated and fast a computer gets, it won't be self aware. But that's just my opinion. If they do make something that is conscious then I'd guess they used something that had that potential from nature in the first place.
1simonmatthews 6 months ago
@1simonmatthews : Oh, not with the current computers. I think it would take 8 million laptops for that. However, there have been some major breakthroughs which season 2 touches upon.
pinkdeath82 6 months ago
@pinkdeath82 Cool I'll take a look at season 2. But 8 million laptops wouldn't be any more self aware or conscious than 1 laptop. I think consciousness comes in levels - ie. from the consciousness of a worm up to the consciousness of mankind. At what point would laptops become conscious? Exactly 8 million? Or would there be a rising level of consciousness with the more laptops you add? With that logic, even 1 laptop must have a certain level of consciousness, but it doesn't. Neither would 8 mil.
1simonmatthews 6 months ago
@1simonmatthews : 8 million laptops would be required to re-create the human brain. If you're only after base conciousness I am sure we're not far off. We might already have done it.
pinkdeath82 6 months ago
@pinkdeath82 I strongly disagree. Maybe with 8 million laptops you could have something that could mimic a human brain, but it wouldn't actually be conscious. It wouldn't be aware of itself. You could put sensors on it to sense touch and send signals to it's CPU to let it know that it was touching something, but it wouldn't experience that sensation like we do. In my opinion, science is nowhere near understanding this. I'll wait for the proof, which I'm quite confident won't come any time soon.
1simonmatthews 6 months ago
Well I think that was less of an interview and more of a well orchestrated attempt at trying to make Dawkins look stupid. Sorry Tubridy, you failed!

If God says every knee will bow - He means will acknowledge Jesus as God. I have an artificial knee so I understand your point. I would rather trust in God than a man like Dawkins for my eternal salvation.
laurian27453 7 months ago
@laurian27453 This is all really only applicable if you believe in something eternal like a soul.

laurian27453 7 months ago
@laurian27453 Well of course. I can't have something that does not exist.
reallyocean 7 months ago
@reallyocean Says Wiki - The word-concept Soul has a secular and non-secular aspect. To integrate the two in a coherent statement Soul would be defined as: The interaction of mind, body and spirit reflecting through conscience the appropriateness of individual or collective behavior. Through a connection to the Soul the mind apprehends abstractions implicit in spirit whether that be of transcendent derivation or temporal analysis.
laurian27453 7 months ago
@laurian27453 noun
1. the principle of life, feeling, thought, and action in humans, regarded as a distinct entity separate from the body, and commonly held to be separable in existence from the body; the spiritual part of humans as distinct from the physical part.
2. the spiritual part of humans regarded in its moral aspect, or as believed to survive death and be subject to happiness or misery in a life to come: arguing the immortality of the soul.

reallyocean 7 months ago
@reallyocean That is the same soul - your essence, your spirit, your heart - your very mind - the YOU in your body of flesh and bone! You can't say you don't have one or you would be just a mass of bone, flesh and cells. :) :) lol
laurian27453 7 months ago
@laurian27453 I'm making a distinction between what most Christians consider a "soul," which I believe as something eternal that goes on after one's dead and must be saved, as opposed to what you're talking about. I don't believe in the former definition of 'soul.' If you want to call our personality and anything that makes us the person we are, that's fine and I believe in a soul in that sense, but there is nothing eternal/forever about my soul. When I die, my 'soul' ceases to exist as well.
reallyocean 7 months ago
@reallyocean How can you be SO sure? Could it not be that there is a power that wants you to believe that? A power so subtle and deceiving, that even you - an intelligent and good person - would beleive a lie? The skill behind deception is - that the deceived is unaware.
laurian27453 7 months ago
@laurian27453 Well of course I can't be sure that a power like that doesn't exist but number one, there is no evidence proving or even alluding to its existence, two, just because an idea can be imagined doesn't mean people should believe it.
reallyocean 7 months ago
@reallyocean Well the evidence is all around you - evil men, wars, money grabbing, adulterous, law breaking etc, etc, You can be sure but maybe you would prefer not to know - sadly not knowing is not the bliss you think it is. But the knowing is true bliss as it frees you from all fear - even the fear of death.
laurian27453 7 months ago
@laurian27453 Since you believe in the Judeo-Christian Bible, it's very heart warming to see somebody who classifies themselves a Christian realize that Yahweh is deceiving people to believe differently than what will get them into heaven. Very nice to see at least one person can admit it. Oh, and it's up to the person believing in Adam and Eve, talking snakes, virgin birth, and the resurrection of a dead god to give evidence of their claims, not me
Revenwazhere 7 months ago
@Revenwazhere I was referring to Lucifer the father of lies. Well if you read and thought on all of what the bible shows you, the evidence for Creation and all the information God has given you, that tells you how everything started and how everything finishes, you would find it not just overwhelming but so factual it could not be denied. Still you have to find that out for yourself - don't leave it too late though for death comes to us all, we don't know when and after that - THE Judgement.
laurian27453 7 months ago
@laurian27453 Oh trust me on this. I have read the entirity of the bible. If you had, you would realize how fucked up your Yahweh is. You would realize that Yahweh is just a "petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser, a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully." i can name many verses within the bible that show the evil of Yahweh. (Cont.)
Revenwazhere 7 months ago
@Revenwazhere Jesus faced a mob that was eager to execute a woman caught in adultery. He put a stop to it with a simple challenge: anyone who has no sin in their life should step forward and throw the first stone.
John 8.7 “ So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
And you, of course, are perfect in all your ways?
laurian27453 7 months ago
@laurian27453
Elu112 7 months ago
@Elu112 Sorry but I DO have a knowledge of my bible. I am not sure what perversions you are referring to but my bible is completely infallable. laurian27453 7 months ago
@laurian27453
Then I'll judge by your own religion. You are attributing things do Jesus he did not do. That is called lying and is according to your faith a sin.
Elu112 7 months ago
@Elu112 If the bible says it happened then I believe it . Yes lying is a sin and I try not to sin but until I am perfect in an incorruptable body in Eternity - the blood Jesus shed on the cross covers my sin - He paid the price for me as He loved me so much to die for me.I am forgiven.
Likewise you too are a sinner and He loves you too and died for you, would you not like to be forgiven for all the sins you have committed?
laurian27453 7 months ago
@laurian27453 The only person that has the right to forgive you is the one you commit the wrong doing to. Only a coward prays for forgiveness from god instead of confronting the actual person you did wrong to. If you did wrong only to yourself then ask yourself for forgiveness. But if you did not do any wrong to anyone, why then ask for forgiveness?
rqm797 6 months ago
@rqm797 EXACTLY ! We have ALL committed a wrong to God/Jesus by breaking His laws that no man can keep, therefore we should say sorry to Him and ask for forgiveness. Therefore we should repent and turn from our wicked ways - you and me included.
laurian27453 6 months ago
@laurian27453 "We have all committed a wrong to god"? are you kidding me.. No wonder religious nuts do evil things, because they just pray to god after and they think they are then forgiven. please do yourself a favor and seek professional help.

@rqm797 An example of a "religiuos nut" who has done evil things, please? Then give me an example of a non-religious nut that has done evil things.
laurian27453 6 months ago
@laurian27453 Ah i see you are 58 years old. I'm sure you have done many wrong things to many different people and it would be almost impossible to ask for forgiveness from any of them. You should try and seek the people you actually hurt and ask for forgiveness and then forgive yourself afterwords. But if you think for one second you can simply ask god to forgive you for all the wrongs you have committed against others and that makes everything ok, then you are delusional.

You are truly the first person I've ever seen on the internet who has actual said the bible has any actual, credible evidence behind it.
Revenwazhere 7 months ago
@Revenwazhere Well the first of many evidences lie in the prophecy of Israel being a Nation again and that many Nations will come against her. As has and is happening. That Israel will be a fertile land and not the arid land it was not so long ago.

It doesn't.

laurian27453 7 months ago
@laurian27453 should a murderer be forgiven? why is it up to god? what about the victim and their family? they're the ones who have been wronged not god, I'd be pissed if god forgave my child's murderer and gave him eternal life in heaven.
majorblood87 7 months ago

laurian27453 7 months ago
If Dawkins lived a good life and was a good man and did not believe in the Son of God or that there was NO God - why would he even want to go to Heaven and why should he enter Heaven? If he had ALL the credentials in the world to enter heaven would he not boast of them? And what of the humble person who failed to be as good as him - stole some bread - does he not get to go there too? What happens to the murderer who was tormented so much he killed a person but later was repentant & remorsefull?

@brigidthescourage Dawkins is just stating that there is no evidence of God, which is why he is an atheist. If we were to do this 800 years ago, we would be stuck in the Dark Ages.

Could have at least read the book he's trying to promote and kept the interview on topic!!
shell1811 1 year ago 2
This guy in the audience doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about. Science IS based on knowledge and not on belief. He's bringing in the old God of the Gaps argument, which has been used throughout history as evidence for Thor and Saturn, which NO ONE BELIEVES IN ANYMORE. Just because science can't answer a particular question TODAY, obviously doesn't mean it will never be answered, as history has shown time and time again. The evidence is there, people are just retarded.

Wow. That guy in the audience speaks really fast.

so sad how the lower iq people have more kids, so evolutionally we are going to get dumber....
Dpesh7 1 year ago
@Dpesh7 its a serious problem. we live in a shallow society in the west which vilifies intellectualism, and promotes idiocy - hence 90% of the internet. Voters cared more about how much Bush loved Jesus then how little he knew of foreign policy, and so he won.
The only way things can change is for society to recognize this failing. most people are too ignorant to even know.

Poor Ryan Tubridy exposes himself as a complete amateur, completely over-ruled by emotion and his personal opinion and interjecting constantly to turn the argument against Dawkins. Very poor interviewing.

unprofessional host.

the tail end of his argument for evolution, and anti-creationism is: intelligent people must reproduce to evolve into a more intelligent species....this flies in the face of his own book, of RANDOM chance, and RANDOM addition of information to the genome...this guys a tool, and people believe him because of his tone, and attitude...he is spinning the same circle argument he has dedicated his adult life to refuting.

I love how they all ways talk about Stephen Hawking when he doesn't believe in god
MrMohjong 1 year ago
@MrMohjong i think hawkings anti-god posture is newfound, he was in the same camp as einstein for a while, in believing in a god, but not and all-inclusive one.
TyTrig 1 year ago
@TyTrig It has been argued that Einstein and even Hawking were a type of Pantheist, using the term God as metaphoric or possibly a synonym for the mysteries of the universe and they actually didn't believe in God as a person or thing. That's all well recorded fact.

I hate when tards like that guy think and act like they are so damn clever. Look at his doofy smile afterward and his disingenuous acknowledgement of what Dawkins is saying. My question to that man is this: where did the force that brought about the fruit come from? (ad infinitum).

If it wasn't for the atheists america would be back in the dark ages.
bpbusstop 1 year ago 56
@bpbusstop amercia is inthe dark ages it is filled with nothing but ingorrant people who deny evolution but argee with the idea of a man using magic made the world in six days BOLLOCKS
duelmaster742 1 year ago
@bpbusstop If it wasn't for atheists and deists the world would still be dwelling in caves.
The fundamentalists religious idealogues are the ones ruining our world.
Men like DaVinci, Copernicus, Galileo, Descartes, Kepler and most famously Isaac Newton (without him we wouldn't have been able to put a man in space ) where all religious but where more deist, the had a belief in God but thought that analyzing the natural world would unlock the secrets of life not blind prayer.

Nipple rings at birth. That's what's next in our evolution. You hear it here first, folks.

But Richard Dawkins
You say that will only happen if the smartest people have the majority of the children.
But you forget, If the Smart people only mate with other intelligent people, that there would be 2 totally different species... Humans can branch off into multiple species similar to what you teach about other primates.

Tubridy's a fuckin tosspot.. He's clearly done no research into Dawkins before he came on and just laughed off Dawkins' claims as if he was a nutjob. He's a joke
goonerballs 1 year ago
@goonerballs I was rather shocked by this as well. As a "new atheist" of about a year now, even I know more about this man and admire him greatly.
rowenagoldfarb 1 year ago
@goonerballs You don't need to do research on Daffy Dawkins his intentions are obvious and his intelligence material and therefore superficial.
hdregmore 1 year ago
@hdregmore
So are you saying you haven't done research on Dawkins? If so, why are you commenting on something you know nothing about? Also, you're being unnecessarily cryptical here.. what do you mean "intelligence material and therefore superficial"?
goonerballs 1 year ago
@goonerballs First of all tell us what your cryptic "Tubridy's a fuckin tosspot" means. Are YOU commenting on someone you know nothing about? I know it is crass to mimic a statement however you really do present very strange commentary.

drhitler 1 year ago
whats sad is that one of the smartest men on evolution just basically told us that because the dumb superstitious rednecks are having the most kids... theirs a good chance that we will fail to continue to evolve as intelligent beings... ugh...
raztis1 1 year ago
@raztis1 What elitist bullshit. If you understood the value of life you would realize that such misplaced "intelligence"does not equate to any sustainable advantage.
I am amazed at how bigoted people can be just because they have been the product of a very fortunate birth. Think before you post.
hdregmore 1 year ago
@hdregmore first off, the last thing anyone can call me or my life is elitist. i was homeless at 17, making less than 20k a year till i was 25. The FACT is, is that animals evolve based on what animal is reproducing the most. in nature, it is always the smartest, or fastest, the one that doesnt die as much. With humans, it has now become the lazy, uncaring baby factories that produce while the most intelligent are careful when deciding to bring life into the world.
raztis1 1 year ago
@raztis1 What rubbish, just because people embrace life and decide to have children you call them "lazy". The fact is that people like you do not have many children because you are so self centred and have no time for them. That is the evolutionary process in action, survival of the compassionate. You say that intelligence is somehow linked to family size which is quite an absurd notion.

Daffy Dawkins is put in his place by a simple yet wise man. Biologists should stick to their little field and leave the big questions to the bigger thinkers .
hdregmore 1 year ago
@hdregmore
" Daffy Dawkins is put in his place by a simple yet wise man. "
The argument for god that the "simple yet wise man" gave is that the world is littered with evidence of him. Wow. What a compelling and original argument. And the guy accepts evolution. Too bad natural selection doesn't weed out morons like you so that our species can evolved to become less superstitious.
pokermaster54 1 year ago
@pokermaster54 I am amazed that the eugenics programs initiated by atheists in the US early last century hasn't eliminated the stupidity gene that you obviously still have. You could try a frontal lobotomy, that might help. As long as "wise men" are around dickheads like you will always be put in their place.

@hdregmore
Rational discussion is way out of your realm.
pokermaster54 1 year ago

If that is so how come people on the other side don't fall off?"
pokermaster54 1 year ago
@pokermaster54
