I'm white and I agree that people shouldn't use that word, but I also agree that Barbara is not guilty in this case; she is a reporter and the word was in the story. This issue comes up in literary studies, too--the N word appears in some poetry, etc. from the early 20th century, and professors have to decide whether they are going to censor it when they read or read the piece as written. It's a sensitive thing--as Cenk said, it's "toxic"--but it can be hard to know how to deal with it.

There were many spellings such as nigre, nigra, etc used by an uneducated, illiterate, southern plantation owners and common citizens. Try researching current data from the library of Congress or talking to archeologists who diligently research ancient texts such as an Egyptologist. You think the word nigger was made up from thin air. The word nigger has many common syllables to many ancient words meaning black for a good reason, genius. The word evolved as people migrated from parts of Africa and India to other parts of the world. Language is relevant.

@christianpreachr Okay, I should have communicated more effectively. Fair enouph. By etymology, I meant the chronological evolution of the word, black. Foreign words are often mispronunciated then spelled according to those mispronunciations. Example, Indians came from mispronunciation of en dios > indios(plural)> indians. Intelligence? What is the probability of the letters N,G,R, appearing by chance in a six letter word and in the given sequential order? I leave it at that.

How stupid can people be. Know the word has a history which involves blacks and whites. Blacks who know and appreciate their HISTORY will always feel uncomfortable when hearing that word. As a conscious white person you should understand this fact and use a more appropritate word to express yourself. Even the youth who do not connect with our HISTORY will still kill a white person if they call them that. So think if they feel like that and not know there history then how you think we feel..GRIM

Some people use the word snake to denote a negative connotation towards another person, yet the word snake has a specific meaning. The fact that some people use it today in the context of insulting someone doesn't give validity to the intented meaning of the word.

Black people are too sensitive about this word NIGGER. How can you say there's a certain way to say that word? nigger or nigga, It's just a matter of pronunciation. the meaning ends up being the same, and comes from the same historical background. Blacks are the only ones allowed to say it according Sheri. Why would any person say a word that offends them if another race says it?
