  • not a bad CAT for the size it is. I drive a Kenworth daycab pulling a tanker with this engine and it's around 445hp and it pulls pretty good through the VA hills on the interstates. about 35psi turbo and it sounds good when she whistles. i think these engines are a great in the middle for someone who wants a light engine and some decent power

  • hope fully in a few years thats the type engine im dropping in my truck

  • @amusichound ...homologue the bigger 3 liter instead of the 2 liter, even though the 3 liter is an overkill for the smaller X3 and makes less sense.Reason is,that the Gov´t tries to keep out foreign Diesel as much as possible cause otherwise your whole industry would be a wash, you simply overslept thirty years of Diesel engine development.

If I could choose between a may be 20 mpg gas truck and a 45 mpg (foreign) Diesel Truck ( I am talking 1/2 ton here),what would I choose to by?what would you?

  • @amusichound ..because I see just how good those systems work in their line up (and multiple ones just like them).I drove an MAN 19.310,build in 88´,equipped with a three axle ABS for instance.

Another thing is,that Vovos come with Cummins and CAT engines and that is a little confusing, isn´t it?

Reason is,that foreign Disel engines are very expensive to homologue on the American market:when BMW introduced it´s Diesel for the X3/X5,they had to .....

  • @amusichound have been ignored. When I was talking about common rail II systems (multi jet) I was talking about the fact, that a Diesel that injects it´s MAIN-portion of fuel over several (pilot-main 1-main 2-after injection) will burn it´s fuel way cleaner, causing far less problems with Diesel particle filter systems....Cummins and even more CAT ignored this trend until federal regulations overrun them...sad but true.

Why I go off on someone saying how "crappy" European manufacturer are?....

  • @amusichound Ok,lets talk basics now:Do American manufacturer produce working Diesel engines?Yes,they did and they made good money doing so.I don´t deny that fact. So,where did they go wrong?simple, after years of successful business and blinders, set to a narrow gap that just included the States, they fell behind in technological development. How I can say?Well, the whole emission situation has caused a lot of problems to them and the reason is,that important engine management developments....

  • @amusichound ...the carbon filter technology....European manufacturer have mastered far stricter emission regulations .Did you know, that the first Diesel filter was introduced by Peugeot in 1998?Oh!.....now you want to tell me,how far advanced Cummins or CAT are?

Right....America has proudly developed advanced technology.....dream boy,dream......best sold cars:TOYOTA....and that stands for the rest of you industry,so don´t try to tell any different!

  • @00G000 if toyota would build a super duty or severe duty truck, id get one. but htey dont. their current truck wont work. well not for my needs anyways. that aside yeah european emission laws are quite strict. even so its a pain in the arse to import a euro spec vehicle into the states.. not counting domestic produced euro cars. talking about vehicels that exist there. but not here

  • @yamahonkawazuki Toyota doesn´t seem to be "the answer" to all problems anymore anyways...those recalls that they had (and for what reasons!) shows, just how much they push down on their quality.

One lesson can (and should be) learned from them regardless:Diesel in lighter vans and trucks (VW Transporter or FIAT Duacto) wich are very important in the European business market, were neglected by the Japanese, who were looking towards the US and therefor putting gas engines first.....

  • @yamahonkawazuki ...all through the 80´s,Diesel in cars lingerd around a few % market share but as soon as (by the end 80´s) turbos came into play and than common rail and Diesel started to be fun,the Japanese (who had a horrible reputation for Diesel engines regarding power and reliability),were building "over night" fully compatative Diesel engines in cars and light duty trucks...Tundras are just the beginning and if the US industry doesn´t watch it..Dinos will go extingt...

  • @00G000 y and y do we let this happen

  • @amusichound I attacked you for nothing?YOU look down at others,YOU called me a "nationalist scum",while you don´t even know what´s going on in the world and that creates a lot of negative feelings around the world....it´s not us,neither in Canada nor Germany (were I am from),that the whole world would like to kick in the butt,so go figure....first:read up on the topic,THAN make a reply....and CAT is pretty much out of the semi-engine business, since they couldn´t make their engines work with....

  • chaka

  • hp???

  • RENAULT? Have you seen the faggit ass trucks those engines go in? LMAO!

  • @amusichound God is your business boy...Americans have rented him permanently and in his name they go and wage war on other people.

Sorry,it´s you guys that have a problem with the world and not the other way around and Canada is ten times a better place than your sorry excuse for a broken country that has corrupted it´s own values and that is getting taken over by the Chinese thanks to your own greed!

  • @amusichound You know nothing, not even what Renault is (biggest French manufacturer and owner of Nissan),but that´s OK...you are American and that means that you have an overblown ego and you think that your sorry technology shit is worth something.

I know the reason for your statements:you are a fucked up,self righteous American who gets his ass kicked in every aspect.....shut up,ask your Chinese lords first,if you are allowed to open your mouth,or they might call in your states debt

  • @amusichound You little arrogant and childish boy (even though you sound like a girl). So,you know what a common rail system is?Wasn´t my question,I asked if you now what a multi jet common rail is (generation two). You haven´t seen anything yet but the tips of your shoes, little boy.

  • @amusichound further:you think you can talk down on Scania or Volvo and yet,you wouldn´t even find Sweden on a map.....that´s what pisses me off with you ignorant yerks from across the pond.

Your whole industry depends more and more on European know how and yet you guy are still mouthy.

And to finish this:Renault (French automotive and heavy truck producer) stopped using Cummins engines in 2005....emission standards couldn´t be kept with it..they use now Volvo!

  • @amusichound Well sir,you are a "youtube professor" yourself and a bad one!

Regarding Cummins:yep, the 12 liter is a DAF engine, featuring common rail injection instead of pump-injector injection and is made of spherical cast (you know of course what that is,right professor?)and the engine blocks are still produced in Holland, since you "oh so awesome Americans" haven´t figured out how to produce that.

You won´t even know, what a multi jet common rail is.

  • @amusichound holy smokes,ma,read up on history BEFORE you make such a silly statement!

The DIesel engine was invented by RUDOLF DIESEL in 1893.Mercedes and MAN where building Diesel engines long before ANY American thought of them as useful (MAN build it´s first Diesel Truck in the twenties).

As today,we see just how far the US are behind Europe in that regard:pump-injector style Diesel, that can´t keep up with emissions,so Cummins had to get it´s new PK engine line up from DAF (Holland)...pah!

  • @amusichound The original diesel engine was invented in Europe as the internal cumbustion engine!

Today Scania and Volva is producing the stongest truck engines in the world, 700 and 730hp

Here we use SCR system on our engines, hat mean better power, better torq, better fuel consuption

    no crappy EGR.

  • With years of experience working with truck engines Caterpillar Mercedes Detroit Diesel Cummins Volvo International MAN

Catrpillar and Cummins are worth something.

  • @amusichound lol I agree with ya. Mercedes? That's a throw away engine. International doesn't make good engines in my opinion. I would take a Cummins or a Cat. That's it lol. Lolz, you funny man

  • @amusichound Yeah I couldn't take working on that 8V71 Detroit. I never worked on a 3406 C or B Cat. The B model is all mechanical right? Cummins motors aren't too bad to work on in my opinion. lmao, Yeah, they kinda do have that philosophy. Cummins just does it there own special way haha. The new Detorits the DD16 or DD15, I don't like them. There is a video here on Youtube of people trying t ocompare the new Detroits to a Cat or CUummins when it comes to tourque! I was like bullshit lol

  • can anyone tell me were the diagnostic plug is on a c12cat in a freightliner century class,in the cab or in the engine bay?

  • @amusichound Yeah, I agree wit hya. I would take a cummins anyday. Unless where talking about that 3406E, then I would take that over anything hands down. Lol, I don't like em all. I am not a fan of Detroits, especially the 2 stroke ones lol. I took a V-871 Detroit apart at school, And it was a pain in the ass. Plus, Detroits just don't sound as good a Cat or Cummins

  • sounds good

  • we actually put an old cat v8 diesel in an old chevy c60 then lowerd the truck and put a 1500 bed on it to look like a little truck my dad sold it about ten years ago but that thing could pull

  • My dad has the cat c12 in his dump truck. It's a 1999 model and hasn't been too reliable. He has about 500, 000 Km on the engine and it looks like he's going to have to rebuild the motor already. Are the Detroit Diesel, Mack, Volvo, and Cummins engines any better?

  • @joeraptor1 the cat genset 3999 v 16 might fit i dont really know im ten but i know alot about heavy equiptment

  • @joeraptor1 The new Cummins ISX blows the newer Cat motors out of the water! I my self am a Cat man, but The new C model Cat's are trash. Mack makes a very sturdy diesel engine, and they allways have.Volvo also makes a good truck motor. Detroit makes a decent motor as well, but Cummins makes the best diesel motors around. Cat should've never stopped making the 3406E. That motor was bullet proof, the new C model cats though... Not even close

  • I go to penn college now i'm rebuilding the cat c-10 in kilcoynes lab

  • sounds awsome

  • haha must be nice to work on a truck enigne on a skid, wait to u have to dig those suckers out

  • C12 is a crappy engine. I've had a few of them. They don't hold together all that well at 435 horse but at 390 they're a little more reliable.

  • not sure about the C12's most of the engines I worked on were about the same as the 300's

older ones should be at least 10-15 psig some of the newer ones that will rev up to 2300 rpm should be in the 15-25 psig range. anyone else that may know please correct me if Im wrong.

  • does anyone know how much psi the turbos put out in these big rigs?

  • @454sskilla not sure about the c12, but i know that c15's can take up to like 35psi, but will usually run between 25-30 psi

  • Very Nice

  • i like they paint the engines yellow for cat diesels

  • good sounding motor

  • expensive to fix, hard to find parts. cummings is a better engine

  • pretty cheap to fix hear in the states, and easy to find parts, cummins is a quality motor, id say cat and cummins are pretty equal, but we will lose cat in the states after 2010 cat dosnt want to mess with the emissions bs for on road engines.

  • Well I live in england, everyone steers clear of cat engines when it comes to haulage. So are Cat pulling out of the states?

  • yes cat will be pulling their line of highway engines in the states after the 2010 emissions standards go into effect, cat dosnt feel they are ready with the technology required for the next bump in emissions standards. However it is my understanding that they will be back with highway engines after 2015 when the emissions standards for off highway engines reach the same level of highway service motors.

  • No, according to International Truck and Engine Corp., it's new MAXXFORCE 15 will be a C-15 using International induction and exhaust. It will be International engine blue. CAT is good engine. The Kenworth W900L I drive has a CAT C-15 and it is good for haulage. What engines are favored in England?

  • They seem to love cummings, and the welsh love Rolly Royce engines

  • sorry but its cummins there is no g i work for cummins and i am a fan so sorry for the correction but i felt it must be done

  • Thanks, I do try to keep an eye on my spelling. lol

  • its cool everyone makes mistakes thats y i didnt jump ur ass or nothing

  • CAT will cease to offer on-highway engines true, but International will be offering it's MAXXFORCE 15 which will be a CAT C-15. Well from head to oil pan will be made by CAT but induction and exhaust will be International. It will also be painted International engine blue. Look it up if you like CAT.

  • bullshit! if its not a cat its a dog!

  • We've got 2kamags at where i work, and they use these engines, if we need a part we're getting it the same or day after.

Expensive to fix? yeah but its reliable.

  • oh and we just changed the turbocharger today to and other stuff. Im gonna put the old turbocharger in my VW TDI hahaha

  • My 05 C-13 has averaged over 7 mpg for two consecutive quarters pulling bulk loads, 79,000-80,000 lbs in a 379. I can't complain about the little Cat.

  • Nice Engine, caterpillars are one of my favorite engines! They are even funner to drive, or drive a vehicle that has one rather. Thanks for posting!

  • that is a nice 3196 Cat Diesel engine

  • CATS ARE NOT TO BE GOVERENED..!!!they suck massive ass when the balls are cut on them .when i was otr with a cat c12 pulling a 6%grade at 75,000 gross it was slow with 4:11 rears @25mph

  • I drove some Freightliner daycabs with the C12 governed at 1,600 RPM, What the fuck slow as shit.

  • new caterpiller sucks on fuel economy and power. cummins is much better i used to be big fab of CAT.

  • cant say i agree with you on that, i use 750 ltrs from townsville to brissy in a b double and the cummins used to use about 850.. yes,, there are varible to consider, but pulling power, yes the cummins is a better pulling engine, but i found less reliabile than the c15.

  • You know, almost sounds like a '99 Mack E7, cant recall the year but they were turds, around 370 HP?

  • I would find a way to fit this in a pickup. Hey someone stuck a N14 cummins on the bed of there Ford F250 truck and somehow hooked a NV4500 5 speed to it with ripping it apart.

  • knew a guy who put a cummins big cam 3 in a 78 f150, he got a f700 frame and put the body and bed on it, put dana 70s under it with a custom lift and put a syncronized fuller 6 behind it with a transfer case out of an old army duce and a half. it looked pretty bitchin, too bad some jack ass hit him broadside in an intersection and totaled his rig.

  • C-12 is 10X better than the new C-13, regardless both use oil. C-12 sounds better, has more power, and has a nicer jake.

  • i Agree. I never really heard a C13 before, but the C12's are nice motors. They sound pretty good.

  • I did that 3406E engine when I was up there 8 years ago do they still have it?

  • nohting like pussy power

  • I did my trade as a diesel mechanic in Australia, I did everything but rebuild engines and gearboxes, but A good mechanic is hard to find. hey if you want to do it great, but make sure you find a job that actually rebuilds engines and not one that just pulls engines and sends them away.

  • Hey s172mch,

You don't want to be a mechanic. Learn what you can and do something better with your life.

After 25 years it is time for a career change for me. It may look glamorous and fun. But it gets down right discoursing when management looks upon as scum and calls you a dime a dozen.

  • give me that motor for my frieghtshaker

  • stwcd why u say that?

i want to go to diesel school

is this a good one? its near me

  • Wrench? I thought you said you wanted to be an O/O.

  • wat school is it bud and where u form

  • check out the wyotech website they have many campuses i may go to the one in pa

  • Cat will no longer make truck engines.

  • They will be working with Navistar for the on-road engines and Cat badged trucks, though.

  • They do sound nice, that's about it though.

  • The C12 cats were a pretty good motor. They sounded just like a 3176. The 3176 and C12 is basicly the same thing. The C12 is a 12L while the 3176 is a 10.3L. They sounded the same pretty much.
