I've got a comparison of the 5D mk2 video vs their HV30 camcorder and a couple of other "pocket" video recorders. Let me know what you think. Search for:
VERSUS! Canon 5D mark 2 vs Canon HV30 vs Apple iPhone 4 vs Cisco Flip Video UltraHD 3
@meltdownman1 Might be a little bit of IR contamination if ND filters were being used to enable wider lens iris setings. Some older fast lenses may be a bit yellow if they contain thiorium glass elements or old canada balsam lens adhesive.
But you can purchase lenses that have Stabilization. Look up Canon IS.
It's pretty difficult to get good hand held coverage since the shape of the camera isnt like a traditional video camera. I'm sure with practice you can get it steady, but not as steady is a tripod.
Although I sold my HF10, I think it's a great little video camera. At first I was put off by the color output. But then I realized that bland color it produces is key for color grading.
When shooting outside in the daytime, use the "cloudy" white balance setting regardless of what the conditions are. That'll warm the picture up quite a bit and get rid of some of that blue.
Great editing on the video. I have the 5d Mk 2 as well. The video quality is amazing, but capturing is a little difficult due to the focusing complexities. Great work!
i wonder to know if you have full control , while you recording video , somebody says is automatick . Can you operate in manual , by the way amazing video
You have almost no exposure control in video mode, you can adjust the exposure bias but other than that the camera sets speed, aperture and ISO how it sees fit. You can control the aperture by using a lens with a manual aperture setting. Why they don't allow you to control video properly I don't know, with the new Panasonic DMC-GH1 you apparently can.
Great Video, just got myself one of these cameras. Could you tell me what editor you use and do you transcode footage first, and What format you export too. I've got mac and PC. Just need a few tips.
Thanks for the fast response, I got the 5D Mark II today, and it came with a 24-105mm lense.. but I'm thinking of buying another couple of lenses.. maybe the ones you mentioned..
I will try that lense.. I have another question please.. did you add any kind of effects or sepia color to the picture at 00:37? It just looks like film quality..

I've noticed that with a lot of the vids using the 5D MII that there is a yellowish tint to them. Can anyone tell me why that is with this camera?
Thanks in advance,

Full size sensors are the way to go,that's for sure.
1/3,1/2, even 2/3 inch chips are way to small for HD or higher spec's.
All you Camcorder manufacturers, just install these chips and throw away anything smaller.

some steady system or tripod?
guisikora1 2 years ago
A Manfrotto 190XB Tripod for most shots. This rig usually does a great job, but the wind this day was brutal.

Sorry for the late response. I had thought I responded.
I exported to h.264 mp4 using Sony Vegas.

MrHiggibaby 2 years ago
Amazing! How can a camera look so good, lol...
did you use any colour correction at all? And, in your opinion, does it have a larger dynamic range than a normal prosume camcorder?
theguymjp 2 years ago
I used some minor color correction to warm up the image using Sony Vegas.
I cant speak much about the dynamic range as the only comparison I have was to a Canon HF10 and an old Canon GL1.
I did do some tweaking in the camera to reduce contrast. This definitely helps when trying to keep tame those crushed blacks.
backhandfloater 2 years ago
Okay, thanks for the info.
I have a HF10 as well, but since getting it I've been a tad disappointed with its colours. Its far too blue for my linking.
All the clips I've seen of the 5D 2 look amazing. I really like how it captures skin tones.

Hi there......
I forgot that I could ask you.....I've spoken to you before.....
I'm the guy who was trying to decide Xha1 or the Mark II.
Quick question.
How long does it allow you to film in full hd?
is it 2 minutes or 12 minutes?
craigmazzali 2 years ago
12 minutes continues shooting, then you need to press Rec again.

zalclemonson 3 years ago
I'm also a mac and pc guy.
On Mac: Final cut -> transcode to prores
PC - Sony Vegas - transcode to cineform using Neo Scene.
Export on both to h.264 mp4.
backhandfloater 3 years ago
I'm impressed! great job! tell me please, what kind of lense did you use?
Oct0pu5 3 years ago
I used a couple of Cheapo Sigma lenses: Sigma 24-60mm and a Sigma 70-300mm.
Thanks for watching.
backhandfloater 3 years ago
Thanks for the fast response, I got the 5D Mark II today, and it came with a 24-105mm lense.. but I'm thinking of buying another couple of lenses.. maybe the ones you mentioned..
Oct0pu5 3 years ago
The 24-105 is a way better lens then both of the sigmas I've mentioned. Especially when it comes to photo.
If your needs are strictly for video, that 24-60mm is quite a steal at $230 bucks.

Great cinematography!!!! temping to buy!
I wish the camera had a headphone jack!

this video you made is messing up my obsession with the xha1. but the mark 2 only records 12 minute hd videos right?
craigmazzali 3 years ago 2
Honestly, I dont know for sure. I've never let it "roll" that long. But judging by the file size limitation of Fat32, 12 minutes could be accurate.
backhandfloater 3 years ago
I mean, which one should I buy.
do you own this camera?
craigmazzali 3 years ago
I don't have any experience with a XHA1. If your main goal is video, I'd go with the XHA1 or another dedicated video camera.
One important thing to note is the 5D is a still camera 1st. The video is just the icing on the cake. And damn, that icing sure is tasty!
backhandfloater 3 years ago
I love this video.
Hmmm? canon xha1 or this camera?
