I met Leonard Knight on a trip from San Diego to Yuma a few years back. On the spur of a moment I took a detour to Salton Sea. I'm so glad I did. Not may strangers stand out in my memory the way that old man does. Nothing phony, nothing to discover, what you see is what you get. He doesn't offer any more than he expects which is nothing really, just be who you are. Very wise man, you can see it in his eyes when he talks to you.
Can't wait to meet this gr8 man.....a gr8 model for everyone on dis planet earth to remind that there is nothing greater den love.....love is d only thing that binds humans 2gether, planets, stars, galaxies n every other heavenly bodies :)
i cant seem to find the song if recall its in the early part of the movie when he starts travelling hes in the car on a bridge or something. its more joyful kinda popish then the other songs in the movie.
I finally made it to salvation mountain but Leonard Knight was not there. I heard he was in the hospital. His caretaker Kevin Eubank help care for him died a few weeks ago at salvation mountain. Now there is no one there to greet the visitors. I feel empty inside yet i never meet Leonard. God bless Leonard and I hope he will get better and come back. And remeber Jesus loves Leonard , you and me.
I've actually met the guy. His name's Leonard Knight. He crash landed in his hot air balloon a while back. He decided that he should stay. After some time, he produced Salvation Mountain. It's entirely made out of clay, paint, and straw. You can go there even to this day and he'll give you a tour of the place, free of charge. He's probably one of the most sane, encouraging people you'll ever meet.
I've been to salvation mountain and i reckon everyone must go there and meet the old guy in this video, Sir Leonard Knight, he's 80 now and he might not be having too much time left because of his worsening health and that throws me for a loop cuz he's such a nice man and i really hope and pray that he lives for several years to come to invigorate and galvanize people to love god and all his creations.
this is such a creepy scene because of the way kristen stewart keeps staring at emile hirsch. she's known him for 5 minutes and is keeps eye fucking him as if she just wants to rape him right there.
"The freedom of this place is just so beautiful. To me, I wouldn't move for $10 million unless I had to. So, I'm contented here in the desert, and I'm living where I want to live, and I think good gets better." Compare this with Chris's trek to the Sea of Cortez or to the Stampede Trail in Alaska, or with the Pacific Coast (California, Oregon, and Washington). "The freedom of this place": Freedom is how you interact with your environment, the meaning you pull from every encounter. Live!
I LOVE the fact that the "old man" is not an actor, he's an actual man living in salvation mountain with an endless love for life. That's the kind of stuff that makes this movie so fucking great, while emile and kristen is in a way acting this scene this man is just telling the truth. If you doubt it, look at him! He looks like he's been living his whole life in the sunshine. Epic movie epic scene

I swear, the Christopher McCandless character in this is so stupid it makes me sad. He's presented in Slab city with a situation away from the 'society' that he hates, yet it is self-sustainable and friendly. Then he abandons that, meets an old dude who also cares about him, then abandons that to go die in the woods. I mean, I'm a rougher myself, I get the allure of the wild, but what he had at Slab city was so much better.
@strayebyrd But wasn't his ultimate goal from the start to reach Alaska? Seems like he was dead-set on doing it, and didn't want to stop until he finally made it. (Not read it in a while, but please tell me if I'm missing something.)
@EtMikkie no yeah you are right, but I mean he wanted to get there to get away from the whole 'SOCIETY!' that is critical and hypocritical. I get that he wanted to head to Alaska, but he just seems to show a hell of a lot of poor judgement along the way. I guess that's the life of a supertramp though
Wow! I didn't realize how beautiful Kristen Stewart truly is. I must admit, I didn't think she looked so hot in the Twilight Saga, since she was made up to look drab and homely.
If anyone was wondering, the old guy is not an actor, he actually lives there, he built that mountain by hand over 36 years, and everything he says there is what he believes, not a line in a movie.
I assumed that they told them that it was a documentary or they wanted a tour so they would get a "real" reaction out of him. Especially that line about the sewer plant, so out of left field. lol.
He is real. In an interview with Stewart, she said the scene was unscripted. They showed up with Penn and basically took the tour with Knight without any actions, cuts or scripted dialogue . It's pure.
I was let out of city jail at 9:00 at night, i walked 6 miles in 30 degree cold and was picked up by a friend i had not seen in 6 years. He saved my ass from the cold, fed me and brought me to his apartment. That night i watched this movie and it definately changed my life. God is good..... all the time.
i live 30-40 minutes from this place and i just heard about it 2 days ago. and ill be taking my daughter and my mom out there. its crazy that i never heard about it. and its been in a movie. CRAZY!! :) CANT WAIT FOR TOMORROW.
this old man is the craziest, coolest and honest guy I will ever met someday in my life, just for his wisdom and kindness is a must to visit a place like that
Im not sure if that old man is an actor or not but if he is he the best I have seen and if not is still the best I seen. When he is asked if he believes in love and he looks at the camera and says "yeah, totally" I cant describe what it did. I only saw this film recently but have never seen anything like it, it is life changing....
@filwho that is EXACTLY the reason I am here. I had a very similar reaction to that particular part. You've described it better than I could have though.
@great6084 I cant describe how this film made me feel, literally, everytime I try I just end up mincing my words and it doesnt make sense, but there is something fundamental about it that I have never seen in a film before.
@filwho totally agree with this! When I watched the movie I couldn't tell if he was an actor or not...turns out he's playing himself. His name is Leonard Knight and he's on wiki if you wanna read about him :) It's a brilliant scene - one of, if not the best in the movie!
@29Kyle Yeah you're right, his name is Leonard and he sits by the Salvation Mountain like 24/7 - amazing guy to dedicated his life to preserving it and giving out the messages of love - fab.
@filwho that's exactly what i thought when i saw it. in fact i watched it over and over. this is one of my favorite scenes in this movie because it is so moving and truly beautiful :]
@filwho The old man's name is "Leonard Knight" He is most famous for his creation of "Salvation Mountain", a clay slab of mountain painted with 100 gallons of paint (As Knight said in an Interview). The government actually disallows anyone to destroy, damage or remove the site.
Leonard Knight DID actually meet Chris McCandless sometime between 1990 and 1991.
@filwho The reason it is believable is(correct me if I am wrong). However I am pretty sure this is an actual guy that lives out in Salton City. And I also believe that is his legitimate house. So it isn't a surprise if it is believable if he isn't really even acting. He is just being himself.
@filwho That guy isn't an actor, he's the actual man who built Salvation Mountain and who has lived there for over 20 years. The reason that his acting is so amazing is because it's not acting - it's REAL. He REALLY believes in love, he isn't acting it out.
@filwho Yea, he is a real guy, not necessarily an actor. He does live there, and that is how he actually interacts with people. I'm not religious, but I am glad you can see his purity!
@filwho he's not an actor. he's the real old man. Chris spent some time in this place, near this old man. but in an interview, he declares that he does not remember Chris being there, living with them and him. he refers at him as 'gentleman'. :) he's so cute, so true, even in the movie.
@filwho That old man is Leonard Knight. He is the sweetest old man from Vermont that you will ever meet. I've sat and talked with him out at Salvation Mountain (where this takes place). This is out in Brawley, California. Shawn Penn wanted him to read from a script for this scene. It was all improv. He told him to just send his actors to him and he'll just treat them like everyone else. So everything that he said in this scene, came from him....non-scripted. He said it from the heart.
@mollyabc100 Thanks for the information on Leonard. He is a beautiful person. Would love to meet him myself. It is so sad that people can't be more like this.
nah he wasn't acting at all. My art teacher said she got to meet him and he acted exactly like this in real life and said pretty much the same things.
@filwho I can't agree with you more about your comment. I watched this scene 5 or more time. It got me every time. Beautiful, natural, believable scene.
I met Leonard Knight on a trip from San Diego to Yuma a few years back. On the spur of a moment I took a detour to Salton Sea. I'm so glad I did.
