@revolucioncarnal it a head and neck restraint that all drivers wear. it stops forward head movment in crashes like this. im sure gonzalo died of a basic skull fracture. witch causes the majory of race car deaths. if he would have had the HANS device,he would still be alive. if you want more info on this, just look it up. all drivers start wearing it after dale earnheart past way.
@revolucioncarnal Btw, Hans has a signification. It means Head and Neck Support. In normal driving conditions it does not disable the driver to move his head and neck, but when the head goes backwards (when a car is rear-ended for example, or during high-speed impacts, it blocks the neck like a cast and prevents it from whiplashing.
It wasn't the flip over the wall that killed him, it was the fact he hit the wall head on at 150+ mph without a HANS device to protect his neck from whiplash or anything.
wow i have to say watching this years later , im really suprised he died in that incident , but im guessing the roll bar failed or wasnt able to help due to the fact he was on a slope or i dunno ... just didnt seem that bad but it only takes one tiny thing to cause a fatal wound or injury
@xxAnimeToonsxx Yeah, well he suffered a Basilar Skull fracture (like Earnhardt) from the initial impact which then supposedly caused almost all of the blood in his upper body to exit from every facial opening (from the extreme rotation and G-Forces) BEFORE the car even hit the ground after flipping. He didn't feel a thing I'd imagine.
the comentator says "gonzales rodriguez" from Uruguay like he was a young kid just starting in racing, when in reality he was a very experienced and talented driver ready for a championship and all the other drivers knew him very well, i guess "rookie" is just a word that defines somebody's first year in any given category at any sport
@javierhejtmanek You're right, it didn't do him any justice. I saw Rodriguez win the F3000 Monaco race that year! Back then, his victory was hailed, a really good one. It's not easy no win at Monaco.

it's stange how they refer to him as a rookie (first year in cart championship) when he was more experinced than half of the drivers in that category, he raced with montoya in other series even before he got famous (montoya), raced in almost every circuit in south america and europe and had been around and standing out for more than a decade (thats why penske wanted him as part of his renovated team to substitute one of his drivers)
I was shooting photos in the Penske pit when this happened. Still gives me chills.
RIP Gonzalo.

@nickforthetitle It was really unfortunate that it happened at the most dangerous part of the course.

The camera guy above the corkscrew (1st shot of the crash) should never be allowed to handle a camera again... what an asshole.

I like this track. But I'd be worried if IndyCar goes back there, it's not safe at all.

@youngdeezy1990 HANS was a great invention, it's just a shame that it took deaths like this to develop it.
