I install police equip for a living, and I can tell you right now that A. This is real. Even big cities use DT Scanners from Radioshack. Minneapolis/St Paul has them in almost every car. and B. The Strobe in the third brake light is REALLY illegal. Even for a police car.
amn, this reminds me when it was the telegraph dream cruise, many illegal races, but my uncle was drivin an old camaro, as usual a pitch-black tinted window car came up next to him and was revving (which is an offer to race), my uncle said no and gues what? lights came from under the car, from the dash, under hood scoop, everywhere you can imagine
What is the point of an unmarked car when you everyone can obviously see its a POLICE CAR thanks to the spot light and antennas. Doesn't this defeat the purpose of trying to blend in???
@POPJack1717 I used to think the same, but yet many drivers have no idea they are near an unmarked car until the lights go on. Most are oblivious to the world around them I'm afraid..
i think unmarked cop cars are too obvious. they are almost always all black with black rims, they all ways have enough entanas to give it away and sometimes u can see the interior lights but they r sure gr8 for at night
lol not sure if its fully official leo's dont need scanners from radioshack and some of the lighting is cheap doesnt seem to look like dept standards looks to whacker to me
@firefighter1107 I addded the scanner to pick up the agencies around us that are using digital radios that my Motorola cannot pick up. This WAS a low budget set up. Our town is quite small and does not have a huge budget for outfitting our cars. The local installer did a great job for the budget he was given, at the time.
Where i live in NY, all drive the undercovers drive the exact same model car. So growing up you learn to tell if it's an undercover instantly, so much for undercover. Even in the rear view mirror on the highway you can usually tell if it's one approaching. They basically drive a fleet of old crown vics. Not sure who they think their fooling.
On top of that they leave them all parked outside the police station. So you can just drive by and see them all if you want. LOL.
That's across the country. They usually only trick people with no knowledge of cars. If I see an Impala, Crown Vic, Tahoe, Suburban, or anything else, with an antenna and hidden LED's. I'd assume it's either a cop or a buff.
If I saw the crown vic in this video I would think it's a buff... because the antennas are lip mount antennas. No self respecting public safety installer will do lip mount antennas. It's the cage in the back that gives it away. This car needs a tint.
@BonziBuddys Right. Do you have any idea why they drive crown vics? In this city in NY i frequent (not NYC) a huge amount of the taxi's drive the EXACT same cars as the police, usually crown vics. You almost think it's an undercover cop until you see the taxi sign on the door. So i wonder if cabs/police get them at a discounted rate or what? It's always baffled me.
Taxi companies buy retired police cars. They are cheap, built to last and there is an infinite supply of parts for them. The cheaper companies in ghetto areas don't do much to make them look like Taxis. They take a retired black and white crown vic with the spotlight and pushbar, and throw a taxi company cardboard cutout in the dash. Some even use CB radios for their dispatch. Very ghetto.
@BonziBuddys Thanks brother. I went and did a little research on it after reading this and that explains it completely. Thanks bro. PS. You were right about certain companis not changing much. None of the ones in that NY city i see have a top sign like the NYC caps do, it's just some name plastered on the side. I think it's worth noting that the other main cab company in the city uses the Toyota Prius as it's main car. They are all over the city. It definitely stands out.
@BonziBuddys Some police departments, mainly sheriff's police departments, allow officers who are "on call" to take their vehicles home. That way they can respond to a call straight from home if they are called upon to do so.
There is WAY too much light splash back in front, it would make driving at night much harder than it needed to be. And depending on weather could almost be dangerous.
The black fins to cover that are only like $15-$25.
Now thats a cool police car :D sry , unmarked one :D and u have a hell of a equipment inside , and if i think well of that 3 ... things between seats are radio stations?
Whats so cool about an un-marked unit? Thats the kind of think that forms a wall of distrust between the public and the police. Then there's all the xtra money that has to be spent on additional emergency lighting because the unit is un marked. Piss poor managment and taxes down the drain. the real bad guys will still spot that car a mile away.
@MrPjizzle2009 I was vehicle maint officer in my dept. Clearly marked squads is the only way to go A) Prevents creeps from impersonateing, and B)Helps with a gen public that allready is distrustfull. @12kohl Undercover cars are usually cars that are nothing like police cars and usually don't have much equipment in them. Unmarked police cars usually have all of the equipment a marked car would have but the lights would be interior and would not have exterior markings.

@kaysho So.....what you want is an edge.....a chance to see a cop before exceeding the speed limit, or blowing a stop sign, or committing a criime. You think its unfair for police to be incognito.
How hard was it to install that single strobe in the 3rd brake light housing? I'd really like to do that on my 2008 Impala PPV. I would install two Whelen "Vertex" LED's in that area if it could be done. That entire light package looks really nice. Nice center console instal too for a 2008 Impala. They have limited install area in the center console and that's not too bad for a "home made" type of install.
That is one sweet ride! I have a 2008 Chev Impala PPV in Precision Red. Our Deputies joke with me and call me "The Fire Chief". It is one hell of a car for Traffic Enforcement. They pass me on the shoulders, fly right pass me like i'm standing still. Even had one guy tell me, as I was writing him a ticket for speeding "Sir, if you don't mind me saying, that's one BAD ASS police car!" Caught him flying up on me with Stalker Dual RADAR and he had no idea I was a cop!
Is'int the point of being an unmarked unit to remain un noticed? If that is the point i don't think this does a very good job.Black out rims, spotlight, multiple antenna.Who in there right mind wouldn't know this was a cop car?Even most undercover cars without this much equipment are easily noticeable.
@Bystronicman08 yes and no. im not a cop or anything but the term unmarked just means that you dont have the police logo on the side of your car or anything. also when most people spot police cars its because of the light bar which unmarked cars dont have. an all black car is also perfect for night time cause you would have no idea its a cop...lol. ive always wanted to make my car look like an unmarked car =p
sorry but the fact that this is filmed in your back yard, and your using miss-matched led brands makes me think this is not a poilce car, nice pov. that and i have never seen a patrol car with a scanner.
sorry but the fact that this is filmed in your back yard, and your using miss-matched led brands makes me think this is not a poilce car, nice pov. that and i have never seen a patrol car with a scanner.
@geedunk13 You would need to check with your local laws regarding lighting on motor vehicles. In Illinois it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle on the roadway with these lights unless it is an emergency vehicle.
That's a freaking sexy azz Impala. Those type of vehicles and the Dodge Chargers go hard. And seeing the parking lights on a police vehicle at night makes me nerves lol... Always wonder how long the cop been looking at me or waiting 4 me 2 do something stupid :) Hahaa
as a law enforcement officer, you should be well aware that flashing the high mounted stop lamp (center/trunk/deck brake light) violates the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108 which requires the aforementioned light to only illuminate when applying the brakes. other than that, i love your light setup. it looks great, it's bright, and would certainly get my attention either pulled over on the road or behind me pulling me over =P p.s. do you like the impala? been considering one
@mikeyhh1488 You are correct, however emergency vehicles are exempt. This is the second Impala I have had and I like it more than the Crown Vic. Chevy made a lot of improvements and I can't wait to see the next version of the Caprice.
@bed685 all vehicles used on public roads are to meet the guidelines. i for one don't really care--i was just pointing it out. also, who is going to stop a car that's moving w/ lights and sirens-especially over something as insignificant as what i foolishly pointed out?
@branbilling you shut up. you're not part of this discussion. where do you get off telling me to shut up anyway? what are you, some kind of keyboard commando? just going onto the internet and trying to boss random people around doesn't work.
This car is sexy with the LED Lights. I am going to school for Law Enforecment, and i can't wait to drive one of these and pull over those dumb ppl that cut you off and throw crap out the window! ;)
I would love to ride along and help spot cellphone users and work the computer -- in one of these (or an SUV version) it would be even easier, and the officer might appreciate the extra set of eyes ;-)
@tj16r In Illinois you can have any type of lights you want on your vehicle as long as you do not drive it on the roadway. Red, Blue lights, strobes, and flashers are for emergency services only, but if the car is parked on private property you can have any lighting system you want, just don't drive it with any of those lights on.
@NeOGlock In Illinois, even municipal vehicles get a temporary license plate until the New registration is available. And if you read my replies to other posts here you would have read thatI have been a sworn police officer for the past 8 years. Thanks for your comment.
@Collin2377 It is not illegal in any jurisdiction to have the lights installed in a vehicle. It is illegal to use them on a public road. The car in this video was outfitted with the lights by a company that installs them for police, fire, and other agencies.
The law covers the operation of the lights, not the existence of them. As long as they are not on, they are legal.
in my personal opinion, If your not police, FD, EMT, Ect. you shouldnt have any emergency lights in your vehicle.
I DO see the difference now between UNMARKED and UNDERCOVER......I just dont understand the purpose of the UNMARKED police car, when Its seems Obvious that its a Law Enforcement vehicle. lol.....I guess It just does not stand out as much as a black n white? .....
@pikky1tru Unless this is like some highway patrol car, I doubt its going to be waiting somewhere pretending to be just another car. I'm pretty sure these cars are mainly for detectives as a response car or for the secret service. So yea, if you were trying to assasinate the president or some cop wanted to ask you a few questions about a case, I doubt you will be seeing any slick tops.
@ubcs109 this car is used for daily patrol. In our area, unmarked cars are used for a variety of things. I am a traffic car and, because I am not quickly noticed, people tend to do increbibly stupid things right in front of me.
@bed685 I'd never stop for a unmarked police car! I'd dial 911 and request a marked unit. Undercover cars should never be used in traffic stops, there have been far to many cases where imposters have kidnapped women and robbed people.
Nice car though, do all officers get to take home their patrol cars or just certain ones?
I think may of you guys posting missed the fact that it is an unmarked car not an undercover car. This is driven on routine patrol on midnights and was never intended to be an undercover car.
most undercover dont have any lights or siren, just a police radio and a light you can put on the dash. unmarked is like this all done up with no police badges
@SeanUSA1993 thing is alot of agencies are starting to notice the ability for people to spot police cruisers very easy. In Washington, the state police (ithink) use unmarked non spotlight everydaylooking cars for speed enforcement. You wont know its a cop till they are right up behind you and light you up. Ive heard rumors that they are doing stuff like this with the new chargers.

i dont think it needs so many lights.

Flashy for sure. Wouldn't recommend getting pulled over with those things on though, posing as a police officer is a serious felony!

would this be against the law if I am a citizen and I outfitted a crown vic with all these lights? I live in South Carolina
geedunk13 1 year ago
@geedunk13 You would need to check with your local laws regarding lighting on motor vehicles. In Illinois it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle on the roadway with these lights unless it is an emergency vehicle.

With out the Flashback Guards it must be hard to drive at even normal speeds

@BronzeProductions The lights have been adjusted a little since the video was made. It is something you really have to get used to.

That's quite a machine. I can't even imagine how much horsepower is under the hood. I'm guessing each one is priced around $200k.

Very dramatic at night. If this doesn't get them pulled to the side nothing will.
TheHawaiiantiger 1 year ago
thats really nice!!! love how you got it set up like that. could you do that to other cars or will you get in trouble for it???
215rant 1 year ago
as a law enforcement officer, you should be well aware that flashing the high mounted stop lamp (center/trunk/deck brake light) violates the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108 which requires the aforementioned light to only illuminate when applying the brakes. other than that, i love your light setup. it looks great, it's bright, and would certainly get my attention either pulled over on the road or behind me pulling me over =P p.s. do you like the impala? been considering one
mikeyhh1488 1 year ago
@mikeyhh1488 You are correct, however emergency vehicles are exempt. This is the second Impala I have had and I like it more than the Crown Vic. Chevy made a lot of improvements and I can't wait to see the next version of the Caprice.
bed685 1 year ago 2
@bed685 all vehicles used on public roads are to meet the guidelines. i for one don't really care--i was just pointing it out. also, who is going to stop a car that's moving w/ lights and sirens-especially over something as insignificant as what i foolishly pointed out?
mikeyhh1488 1 year ago
@mikeyhh1488 shut up
branbilling 1 year ago
@branbilling you shut up. you're not part of this discussion. where do you get off telling me to shut up anyway? what are you, some kind of keyboard commando? just going onto the internet and trying to boss random people around doesn't work.

This car is sexy with the LED Lights. I am going to school for Law Enforecment, and i can't wait to drive one of these and pull over those dumb ppl that cut you off and throw crap out the window! ;)
Andrew1nyc 1 year ago
I would love to ride along and help spot cellphone users and work the computer -- in one of these (or an SUV version) it would be even easier, and the officer might appreciate the extra set of eyes ;-)
BalloonJammer 1 year ago
@tj16r In Illinois you can have any type of lights you want on your vehicle as long as you do not drive it on the roadway. Red, Blue lights, strobes, and flashers are for emergency services only, but if the car is parked on private property you can have any lighting system you want, just don't drive it with any of those lights on.
bed685 1 year ago
@NeOGlock In Illinois, even municipal vehicles get a temporary license plate until the New registration is available. And if you read my replies to other posts here you would have read thatI have been a sworn police officer for the past 8 years. Thanks for your comment.

i dont know why a police car would have a police scanner in the middle between the 2 seats
dcmorey74 1 year ago
@dcmorey74 We operate on VHF but several surrounding agencies use UHF and 800 MHZ. The scanner allows me to monitor all agencies in our area.
bed685 1 year ago
Are these lights legal, please ? Or you should work for the police ? I would love to have some of those lights on my car. Thanks.
Collin2377 1 year ago
@Collin2377 It is not illegal in any jurisdiction to have the lights installed in a vehicle. It is illegal to use them on a public road. The car in this video was outfitted with the lights by a company that installs them for police, fire, and other agencies.
The law covers the operation of the lights, not the existence of them. As long as they are not on, they are legal.
in my personal opinion, If your not police, FD, EMT, Ect. you shouldnt have any emergency lights in your vehicle.
Wileyx505 1 year ago
Many police cruiser and responders install scanner to listen other agencies.

@ubcs109
Ok....So what kind of Car WOULD they be Using???
Im just curious.
I DO see the difference now between UNMARKED and UNDERCOVER......I just dont understand the purpose of the UNMARKED police car, when Its seems Obvious that its a Law Enforcement vehicle. lol.....I guess It just does not stand out as much as a black n white? .....
pikky1tru 1 year ago
@pikky1tru Unless this is like some highway patrol car, I doubt its going to be waiting somewhere pretending to be just another car. I'm pretty sure these cars are mainly for detectives as a response car or for the secret service. So yea, if you were trying to assasinate the president or some cop wanted to ask you a few questions about a case, I doubt you will be seeing any slick tops.
ubcs109 1 year ago
@ubcs109 this car is used for daily patrol. In our area, unmarked cars are used for a variety of things. I am a traffic car and, because I am not quickly noticed, people tend to do increbibly stupid things right in front of me.
bed685 1 year ago
@bed685 ya ive done ride alongs in unmarked crown vics that are really really obvious police cars and people still do crazy stuff
bauerpower93 1 year ago
@bed685 I'd never stop for a unmarked police car! I'd dial 911 and request a marked unit. Undercover cars should never be used in traffic stops, there have been far to many cases where imposters have kidnapped women and robbed people.
Nice car though, do all officers get to take home their patrol cars or just certain ones?
Tracti0nAction 1 year ago
you can still tell its a cop car look at the rim and the light on the doors...i was alway able to spot a cop car
SeanUSA1993 1 year ago
I think may of you guys posting missed the fact that it is an unmarked car not an undercover car. This is driven on routine patrol on midnights and was never intended to be an undercover car.
bed685 1 year ago
So its a difference between undercover and unmarked ??
TVMooMoo 1 year ago
@TVMooMoo
most undercover dont have any lights or siren, just a police radio and a light you can put on the dash. unmarked is like this all done up with no police badges
BaDoNkAdOnK16 1 year ago
@SeanUSA1993 thing is alot of agencies are starting to notice the ability for people to spot police cruisers very easy. In Washington, the state police (ithink) use unmarked non spotlight everydaylooking cars for speed enforcement. You wont know its a cop till they are right up behind you and light you up. Ive heard rumors that they are doing stuff like this with the new chargers.
