I've listened to this video many, many times as it's my favorite voice for this poignant aria. He's also my favorite countertenor. I especially love to watch him perform with Spinosi & Marie Nicole Lemieux.
I heard Derek Lee Regan perform Alto Giove, and I could hardly tell the difference between his voice and the computerized voice. He was also an extremely nice & charming person.
@MIMIFORSAGE That is because the Farinelli audio track of Alto Giove is sung entirely by Derek Lee Regan with the exception of the final vocal ornamentation which is sung by soprano Ewe Mallas-Godlowska. I like the addition because I feel that is enhances the aria emotionally as well as musically. I never had heard anyone sing the contrasting B section and da capo A section.
Just discovered this guy today. I've been a fan of the movie Farinelli for years and listening to this guy is breathtaking. I am as of this moment a HUGE fan and will be buying all of Phillipe's works.
@jxnboy007 If you have not heard them yet, do not overlook an A+ countertenor from the previous generation, Paul Esswood, who had an even warmer, richer voice, along with great Baroque musical sense and technique, and a premier countertenor today who is in his 40s, Andreas Scholl, who has a very clean, focused voice, remarkable vocal agility (hear his performance of an aria from Mozart's "Mitridate"), and good musical sense.
yeh sfkcbf i know NOTHING about music at all, i just loved this. The only thing I play is the euphonium..badly!..more about soul than technique and this was wonderful.
@northernfag Although people only recently have begun to more fully appreciate the compositions of Porpora, this aria is quite popular and frequently performed. I love it so much that I learned to play it on my piano. I have yet to hear, however, someone sing the complete aria including the contrasting B section and then the da capo A section with additional vocal ornamentation.
Great to hear some Porpora! He was a big rival of Handel in London, so he must have had something to offer out of the ordinary. It seems to me that there are lots of Baroque composers "hiding out" i.e. no one has taken the time to find their manuscripts and put them into playable form and then recording them so we can hear them. My favoite example is DallAbacco, whom no one had heard of until he was recorded by one of the fabulous early instrument groups.
@rudafer69 This recording was from a live broadcast from Sydney, Autstralia, July 2007. A friend sent an MP3 file. The file probably still is floating about the web. Actually, I prefer Philippe's voice with quicker, higher arias, such as with Vivialdi. A richer, warmer voice, such as Paul Esswood's, would be stunning with this "pathetic" (emotional) aria.
@tonykeywest08 The information already is there; it's confusing for some because of the newer way that YouTube has set up the page. Just click on the arrow to the left of the number of viewers. All the info then show ups.
This aria has a soul only with the singing of a castrated. The voice of Phiippe is one that comes closest. Since I can't hear women singing the Alto Giove.
In my opinion, Philippe is the only one that sing to perfection this kind of repertoire. And he has kept his male attributes. KIKIRIKI! COCORICO! He his French and Slavic...
Philippe darling brava. Real French diva. You look gay and so hot. I love you. I cry every time I hear your voice. Your full feminine lips and soft hands drive me crazy. I want to make love with you and marry you. Are you interested?
Yes, a small portion of what you hear was in the film. What everyone who recently has performed this aria has chosen to do, however, is to sing only the first of the three parts (A-B-A). They leave out the contrasting middle section and the repeated them (da capo) with the opportunity to add ornamentation dependent upon the individual singer's skills and taste.
TRILL not THRILL. when it comes to singing, a trill is when the vocalist sings 2 notes (B-C-B-C-B-C-B-C-B-C...) but very quickly, making it sound like a heavy vibration in his/her voice....for example at 2:02 that's a trill (but it's a bad trill) i hope you can understand now what a trill is :)
Ah thanks a lot. Yes I think I also noticed his trills were a bit disappointing (even if I didn't know what they were called). Do you think he'll be able to improve in that regard?
well first off ur welcome and im glad i helped ^_^
Secondly, no i dont think he will be able to improve that much because the vocal chords of a man contain a lot of collagene, which makes them hard and not flexible and therefore, they can not vibrate much
I think so, too. I learned to play it on the piano for my own enjoyment as well as that of my friends. Nicola Porpora certainly was a brilliant teacher of voice and music, conductor, and also composer. There is a fine portrait of him available on MaleSopranos com (which is in stark contrast to how he is portrayed in the film "Farinelli.")
Yes I did meet him, at a concert in Paris, his singing was so wonderful and then I talked to him a little bit and he was soooooo charming!!!!!! very polite, reaaallly gorgeous and he talked to me a little !! As I'm french we didn't have the language frontier... he was, is so adorable really; if you have a chance to see him, please do !!! have a lovely day ^^
YOu were so lucky.! Unfortunately., he was in Poland only once, in Cracow (I live in Warsaw) even though he has a lot of fans here. I hope that one day ...Jaroussky speaks English too:-)
He should be in Katowice on 30 November 2009 with Concerto Köln, and in Kraków on 3 April 2010 with L'Arpeggiata, although it is not definitive and the venues are unknown to me.
He must have a really busy schedule - he has concerts in Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka in November. I hope he takes good care of his throat/himself, for he is such a gift to us.
the author of this painting seems to have been influenced by the mannerists, seeing the works of bellini. He must have visited 16th century venice too, being influenced by Palma Giovane.. Im not too sure though.. best if the maker of vid tells us.... any help video maker? :P
it wasnt jarousky who sings this in the movie, is a computarized mixture of a soprano voice (ewa malas godlevska) and a countertenor voice(derek lee regan) anyway jarousky is great here
Ai meu deus... simplesmente não consigo viver sem suas musicas... Eu te amoooo muito Philippe Jaroussky e essa canção pra mim é nota 100... Perfeita... simplesmente.. Perfeita!!!
The paintings that accompany this video enhance it very beautifully _ I have been trying to identify them -- one, the forth is Neptune (Andrea Doria) is by Il Bronzino (Agnolo di Cosimo di Mariano Tori) and there is also a panel from the Alter at Ghent by Jan Van Eyck. The others I have not been able to pin down and would appreciate any help anyone reading may have to offer.
The picture at the end (the one before the last one) is a portrait of Molière, playing Cesar in "La mort de Pompée", painted by Nicolas Mignard in 1658. It belongs to the Comédie française in Paris.
I have been waiting ages and ages for record companies to finally get around to A. Scarlatti and Porpora -- the true kings of the Baroque!
Each composer of the Baroque becomes different the more you listen. Scarlatti is the Religious Divine, Hasse the Poppy Entertainer, Porpora the Intellectual Artiste, Handel the Utilitarian Businessman, Vivaldi the Inspired Dilettante.
Well known composers like Handel ARE great. It is just that many other really good composers have been neglected. I am amazed at how forward-looking and beautiful Bononcini's orchestrations are in addition to his vocal lines. Caldara (e.g., "Maddalena ai piedi di Cristo") could write one glorious aria after another. Porpora could write music that truly moves the heart. Remember, 80% of all operas, cantate, oratorios were written before the year 1800.
Thank you for your comment. I hope that this video emphasizes to listeners just how talented Nicola Porpora was as a composer as well as a voice teacher and conductor. Philippe Jaroussky, of course, deserves much praise.
God, He is so good.
