We need more people like you in Venezuela, people that really know what has happened for the past 10 years, people that care for their country. My friend's uncle got killed yesterday because he spoke against a guy in court... is that justice? is that a good government? is that a country that's progressing? Hell no. Socialism is supposed to be good, but the way Chavez sees it doesn't help anyone but himself. Fuck this dictatorship, WE are the ones than need CHANGE XD
Epi1993 - I'm sorry about your friend's uncle but you are mistaken if you believe that such horrible killings only occur in Venezuela. Well longoscot1, I wasn't linking socialism to killing at all, I was saying that Chavez clearly doesn't know what socialism is, and that here we see massive amounts of homicides every single week. Other countries are in a worse position than we are, but this is bout Vzla only. Yeah, both sides are hotheads but we aren't the ones with guns, the ones who shouting on the streets "We want Ledezma dead", etc...Though I completely agree that the opposition is only good at complaining, Thanx!
Thank you Epi1993 - good comments with which I mostly agree, although perhaps you have a lower opinion of Senor Chavez than I do! Meanwhile, it's good that we should be able to talk sensibly about Venezuela and other matters and I thank you for your civil response. Wish I could say the same about salva3131, who has just called me a "f***ing communist"!
Well I usually don't get to talk much with people that support Chavez from other countries, but I'd really have to say that u NEED to live here before making a concrete decision. About rspawn's comment: Though that quote is not 100% true, my uncle, for example, works for Chavez but hates him like no one else. He was forced to vote for him in order to keep his job and he is pretty succesful now. What I'm trying to say is that Chaviztas aren't always right like they think they are... Thanks :D
JinxTrick - you are quite wrong to say that poverty has increased since 1998. The Washington-based Center for Economic and Policy Research says that the pre-Chavez poverty rate of 43.9% had fallen to 27.5% by mid-2007, and that does not take into account improved access to healthcare and education (which were previously unavailable to a sizeable minority).
Re: gang violence. This is a growing problem in Venezuela but double standards abound. What's the homicide rate in the USA?
Phff, great source, come live here and see the poor people yourself, count them up!! Its easy to say it with numbers because the FAKE dollar the government forces on us is so low, but the real dollar doubles it!!! We have a parallel dollar exhange, and we cannot freely access dollars on the official rate, its all a fake for international publicity.
AngiePotter - the Bolivar is certainly overvalued. But when I quoted the statistics on poverty reduction, the exchange rate was consistent throughout, to assist comparison over the whole period of Chavez's rule. That is how economists do it.
And the stats, plus unbiased and anecodotal evidence, show improved quality of life for millions whose streets didn't even used to appear on maps of Caracas in the "good old days".
By the way - don't assume that I haven't been to Venezuela!
I HAD to suscribe. This is the kind of news I want to watch!! By the way, I'm from Venezuela and I must say you totally get the sittuation, I'm glad!! I showed this video to all my (obviously) venezuelan friends. Makes me happy. Keep it up. If you ever want to duo, I'm in.

biggori said: "London Scott needs to SHUT THE HELL UP. marta please disregard everything this idiot says."
A few observations. 1) Marta is big enough to defend herself. 2) Whatever happened to free speech and debate?! 3) Your rudeness and capitalising letters ("SHUT THE HELL UP") doesn't reinforce your "argument" in any way whatsover; it just makes you look like a naive rookie blogger. 4) "Scott" is a Christian name. The correct spelling is "Scot"! Forget "Star Trek"....!
haha a u.s. official encouraging another nation to keep its word. must be just as the u.s. government kept its word in the agreements with the original american population. hypochrisie at its highest level.
i can't believe chavez won again he is a stupid bastard and the 1/2 of the people in venezuela are mesmerize by his hopefull words for change. mmh that sounds familiar
Hey Marta - an interesting wrinkle on your "feminine hygiene" comment. The United States buys its nuclear bombs from a company in Amarillo, TX that goes by the name "Pantex". Look it up!
It's worrying indeed that, judging from some of the supportive comments on this thread, many Americans genuinely seem to regard this sort of teenage-talking-head editorialising-cum-rambling as bona fide "news" and "analysis" with a "fresh" and "upbeat" approach.
Perhaps this particular episode wasn't your cup of tea, or maybe it wasn't even one of my strongest to date but it's clear your "analysis" was based on a surfeit of assumption. After a year and a half of producing this satirical show, I can tell you that much of my audience is not American and comments - even on this episode - come from around the world (not to get bogged down in the minutiae).
gnooze / Marta - thanks for your thoughtful (if lengthy) response. No offence intended whatsoever, particularly to teenagers! I was one myself, back in the Dark Ages. I appreciate that you need an upbeat presentational style. I applaud your chutzpah in starting an internet media business and wish you every success.
However...... I'm still not convinced that all of your audience are aware that it's satire, judging by some of the comments on this thread. That, to me, is worrying!
While I happen to be a professionally educated and trained journalist, I do not advise my viewers to restrict their consumption of current events information to gnooze, a satirical offering at its core.
However, I will say I take pride in my overall story choices as I typically spend hours researching the day's news. I do so to avoid the breathless hype of the soundbite machine that I believe the news media has become. The same news media of which I voluntarily left ranks, so to speak.
gnooze / Marta - actually, I think your story choices are good (having watched several bulletins), and I agree that one should consume current affairs from a wide variety of sources. However, satire should be a weapon against the pompous and powerful. You claim to "avoid the breathless hype of the soundbite machine" but your comments on Chavez were mostly negative and words like "dictator" are identical to the US MSM.
Why not choose more deserving targets, eg big business? Wall Street?
I'm from Venezuela... and also a journalist, and I agree with Marta's view on Chavez. You just cannot hide the obvious, it wouldnt be neutral to do so!
AngiePotter from Venezuela - you say you agree with Marta's view on Chavez. Which view - the "dictator" part or her throwaway comment, at the end, about the "Yes" voters (amongst others) enjoying free healthcare, education etc?
As for the Venezuelan private media, it's been anything but "neutral" regarding the Chavez government. Its role in the April 2002 coup was irresponsibly provocative and hopelessly biased.
What would happen to a US broadcaster that urged open insurrection?
Londonscot, let me ask you something... If there had been TV during Hitler's rule, what would you consider "neutral" at the time, as you say? Would you expect TV channels to say "well, hes killing people, but on the bright side...!", how vague and useless is the concept of neutrality. I only believe in honesty.
In caracas: 60 deaths per day, everyday, mostly violent. Most doctors have left the country. 133 dollars minimum wage. No rice, sugar, coffee or milk in stores.
AngiePotter - there is no comparison between Hitler and Chavez. Hitler was genocidal, racist and in charge of an almost uniquely militaristic and aggressive regime. Chavez is none of those things.
Do you honestly think that the "60 deaths per day" are all Chavez's fault? That "most doctors have left the country", that the standard of living has fallen for the poorest Venezuelans since 1998?
AngiePotter - I am not uncritical of Chavez's government. I think the Bolivar is overvalued. Violent crime is way too high. Inflation needs to be checked. Corruption (a historic problem) hasn't been stamped out. And Chavez's personal style sometimes grates (although it obviously appeals to a majority of Venezuelans, which has to be respected).
But what post-Chavez government would dare to roll back the social programmes?
In that sense, Chavez has raised standards, and rightly so.
You have no idea what you're talking about when it comes to Chávez and my country...like Angie Potter said, give yourself a break from what you see in the media and make a trip to the poor parts of Venezuela. Lies change foreigners perceptions, especially when they don't know what it means to see your country turn to communism. Telling people that they can get anything they want without working is not the answer...not with 40% inflation after 10 years.
goldrinks said: "You have no idea what you're talking about when it comes to Chavez....give yourself a break from what you see in the media and make a trip to the poor parts of Venezuela..."
Firstly, what makes you think I haven't visited the poor parts?
Secondly, if I listened to what the mainstream media say about Chavez, I would have formed a completely NEGATIVE view.
BTW 40% inflation? Not quite. In 1998 (pre-Chavez), inflation was around 100%. Let's keep things in perspective.
goldrinks said: "Telling people that they can get anything they want without working is not the answer...."
I would agree with you, if that were the situation in Venezuela. But it isn't.
Neither is there "communism", by any stretch of the imagination. Private industry is intact, eg media openly hostile to the government, US franchises etc.
Pre-Chavez, huge parts of the barrios of Caracas didn't even appear on official city maps; the residents were "non-people". "The good old days"!
As one might expect, given the wide reach and anonymity of the Internet, I have encountered many thoughtful, intelligent people who enjoy my brand of humor and my deliberately zany take on things. I have also encountered some less informed types who equally appreciate my silliness related to world news. And lastly, there are both simpletons and academics who neither enjoy nor understand my efforts.
gnooze / Marta - I respectfully suggest that you develop a thicker skin regarding criticism, particularly when it's constructive! Humour, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder but where would we be without it?
"See the happy moron, / He doesn't give a damn, / I wish I were a moron...../ My God! Perhaps I am!"
Actually, Marta - I'm not a "simpleton" but an educated professional like yourself. Graduate of ancient Scottish university (est. 1582). Connoisseur of satire...even yours!
It is not of my concern into which class you happen to fall. But, finally, if I am correctly inferring your categorization of me as a teenager, thank you. After all, we Americans are nothing, if not youth-obsessed.
gnooze / Marta - I'm pleased I guessed your age right. In the UK, the joke is that one of the classic signs of ageing is when policemen seem to get younger....TV presenters too?!
Re: satire. The UK has a great tradition. I subscribe to Private Eye magazine. Their basic philosophy is "that the world...is run by hypocrites and humbugs who are mainly helping themselves to money....provided by someone else and then slapping themselves on the back for their brilliant achievement".
Re: satire. At the risk of sounding patronising (which I truly don't intend), you should be more original and fearless in selecting your targets (ie don't just beat up the same targets as the MSM). Keep the script brainy as well as droll and punchy. And increase your international coverage to, say, 50/50.
FUCK YOU! blah blah blah communist son of a bitch. Rats like you must be in hell, stupid asshole. TERRORIST. GO AND LIVE IN VENEZUELA, YOU DO NOT HAVE ANY CLUE ABOUT HOW IS LIVING UNDER A DICTATORSHIP, BECAUSE YOUR ASS IS SO COMFORTABLE THERE IN ENGLAND OR WHEREVER. FUCK YOU 10000 TIMES, FUCKING BIG MOUTH IS WHAT YOU GOT. TRASH SHIT.
You don't know what it's like living under a dictatorship either, Venezuela is probably the most open democracy in the world. Certainly far more than in England. Just because you and your rich cronies don't like it, doesn't stop it being the case. There is no dictatorship in venezuela. It sickens me a bit that far-right nut jobs like you think that just because you live in a country it means that when you tell lies about that country, no one can challenge you.
More blah blah. PAY ATTENTION: I LIVED IN VENEZUELA SINCE 1998 TO 2007. You do not even talk spanish and been there, and lived there, and then you come here to say YOUR BLAH BLAH ... GO THERE, VISIT 23 DE ENERO, EL OESTE DE CARACAS, PETARE, CAPITOLIO, TODAS LAS ZONAS MENOS ZONAS ESTE DEL PAIS, METETE EN EL 90% DEL MIERDERO EN QUE ESTA SUMIDO EL PAIS!!! AND THEN TALK!....NO TO CHAVEZ, AND NO TO ALL THOSE NON-VENEZUELAN TALKING ABOUT THE COUNTRY WITHOUT THE EXPERIENCE OF LIVING THERE!!!!
Well if you don't want people who aren't venezuelan talking about it, then stop telling lies. Venezuela is not a dictatorship, that is a proven fact. Just because you lived in a country doesn't mean you should have free reign to tell blatant lies.
Another thing, the time frame you gave was only 9 years, so either you are only 11 or you are not originally Venezuelan yourself either.
I still think that when Iran or North Korea test their satellite launchers that we should have a ship near them and test our own boost phase anti-ballistic missile capability... 2 tests in one....
In an interview with Sir David Frost on Al Jazeera television, veteran investor Jim Rogers pinned the blame for the economic crisis squarely at the feet of the Federal Reserve, and said that the World Bank and the IMF should be abolished, not given more power, if a recovery is to be made.
One advantage to having a dictator is that you never have to hear the phrase "the last four years" or "the last eight years" ever again. So that in itself mostly sells the program, don't ya think?
And of all the positions Hilary could have had, I think that the one which gets her out of the country on a regular basis is a good fit for everybody. Her talents are best spent having tea with dictators and spewing international bureaucratic claptrap.
Does anyone think that anybody, anywhere, really wants to hang with Hillary? Bill's out cat'n around somewhere really sleazy, doing shit most only read about. At least the Hillary is out of town!
Because the overwhelming majority of Japan's economy is export based. The US is one of your biggest importers, so when we stop buying, japan gets hurt.
About 20% of whole Japan's industries are classified as export related. 80% belong to Japan domestic related businesses. I assume it is more like US$ depreciation which Japan holding so much (2nd in the world...next to China). Many auto & electric related makers have factories in US and those are not counted as exports...I guesss....
You really like that Rainbow Brite shirt. I counted like 16 episodes where you're wearing it. It's like a game... find all the videos where Marta is wearing ______. It's not a bad thing. I guess if I had a video blog, you'd probably see me wearing the same 10 shirts over and over again. I still love the show. Keep up the good work.
We should celebrate through romantic displays rather than gifts - and yet if I showed up at your door to sing you a romantic song, you'd call the cops wouldn't you? :P
I'm surprised though, just the one pants suit joke.Thats gotta be some impressive restraint there.
The pantsuit thing is funny. I don't get most of the jokes because, um, isn't it just a suit? And don't men wear them every day? Why do we call a ladies' suit a pantsuit?
I mean, skirt suit. Okay, fine, I'll grant you that. But pants being a traditional part of a suit and all, the designation "pantsuit" befuddles me.
I think with Hillary Clinton its mostly about her efforts to look a little bit male as well as female. To evoke both the emotional reactions of strength associated with men, and the empathy of women.
Maybe the more apt joke (and good for you to do propwise) is to play her with a small moustache. Cause thats basically what she's going for.
As a word i'm not sure why its a pants suit. Other than that business men may still be semi-hostile to change and women and think its weird they wear pants.
Although, that's mainly because "pants" actually refers to underwear over here - we say "trousers" instead - and it would imply that she's walking around with a suit up top and just her knickers down bottom.
Which is a mental image of Hilary that you probably shouldn't spend too much time thinking about.
But it would certainly liven up otherwise boring diplomatic talks a lot. :D
that exact thought raced thru my mind as i watched that part.. an its funny to see u were conscious of that when u edited it! ahaha .. keep on rockin the free world...
That is so stupid!!!! If a man spends $156 on me, I'd rather he just put it in my savings account.
A fancy dinner is nice and all, but spending more than it would normally cost just to join to unwashed masses in a public display of "romantic" dining?! Spare me! I'd rather go on a picnic.
I should work on getting less fed up by the choices other people make. My blood pressure will thank me.
I would rather lovingly prepare a nice love-infested dinner and pop the cork on a nice hearty red wine for my beloved. If necessary, I will spend a little extra on the wine and extra and believe me, its less than the average American spends and WAY more scrumptious.

About rspawn's comment: Though that quote is not 100% true, my uncle, for example, works for Chavez but hates him like no one else. He was forced to vote for him in order to keep his job and he is pretty succesful now. What I'm trying to say is that Chaviztas aren't always right like they think they are... Thanks :D
Epi1993 2 years ago
"people that voted in favor of Chavez´s proposition do not have health care, food, or jobs"
Sure, that's why they voted for him.
You spout nothing but utter lies about Venezuela, but that's to be expected from Chavez haters.
Meanwhile the UN reports that poverty has greatly declined in Venezuela under Chavez.
rspawn 2 years ago
JinxTrick - you are quite wrong to say that poverty has increased since 1998. The Washington-based Center for Economic and Policy Research says that the pre-Chavez poverty rate of 43.9% had fallen to 27.5% by mid-2007, and that does not take into account improved access to healthcare and education (which were previously unavailable to a sizeable minority).
Re: gang violence. This is a growing problem in Venezuela but double standards abound. What's the homicide rate in the USA?
londonscot1 2 years ago
Phff, great source, come live here and see the poor people yourself, count them up!! Its easy to say it with numbers because the FAKE dollar the government forces on us is so low, but the real dollar doubles it!!! We have a parallel dollar exhange, and we cannot freely access dollars on the official rate, its all a fake for international publicity.
AngiePotter 2 years ago
AngiePotter - the Bolivar is certainly overvalued. But when I quoted the statistics on poverty reduction, the exchange rate was consistent throughout, to assist comparison over the whole period of Chavez's rule. That is how economists do it.
And the stats, plus unbiased and anecodotal evidence, show improved quality of life for millions whose streets didn't even used to appear on maps of Caracas in the "good old days".
By the way - don't assume that I haven't been to Venezuela!
londonscot1 2 years ago
I'd rather trust chavez than any other candidate. You know he's the lesser evil when corporate oil-people try to coup his shit up.

I also reckon that you were serious when you rather embarrassingly pleaded for Marta's response to your earlier email.

It's worrying indeed that, judging from some of the supportive comments on this thread, many Americans genuinely seem to regard this sort of teenage-talking-head editorialising-cum-rambling as bona fide "news" and "analysis" with a "fresh" and "upbeat" approach.
londonscot1 2 years ago
Perhaps this particular episode wasn't your cup of tea, or maybe it wasn't even one of my strongest to date but it's clear your "analysis" was based on a surfeit of assumption. After a year and a half of producing this satirical show, I can tell you that much of my audience is not American and comments - even on this episode - come from around the world (not to get bogged down in the minutiae).
gnooze 2 years ago
gnooze / Marta - thanks for your thoughtful (if lengthy) response.
That, to me, is worrying!
londonscot1 2 years ago
While I happen to be a professionally educated and trained journalist, I do not advise my viewers to restrict their consumption of current events information to gnooze, a satirical offering at its core.
However, I will say I take pride in my overall story choices as I typically spend hours researching the day's news. I do so to avoid the breathless hype of the soundbite machine that I believe the news media has become. The same news media of which I voluntarily left ranks, so to speak.
gnooze 2 years ago
gnooze / Marta - actually, I think your story choices are good (having watched several bulletins), and I agree that one should consume current affairs from a wide variety of sources. However, satire should be a weapon against the pompous and powerful. You claim to "avoid the breathless hype of the soundbite machine" but your comments on Chavez were mostly negative and words like "dictator" are identical to the US MSM.
Why not choose more deserving targets, eg big business? Wall Street?
londonscot1 2 years ago
I'm from Venezuela... and also a journalist, and I agree with Marta's view on Chavez. You just cannot hide the obvious, it wouldnt be neutral to do so!
AngiePotter 2 years ago
AngiePotter from Venezuela - you say you agree with Marta's view on Chavez. Which view - the "dictator" part or her throwaway comment, at the end, about the "Yes" voters (amongst others) enjoying free healthcare, education etc?
As for the Venezuelan private media, it's been anything but "neutral" regarding the Chavez government. Its role in the April 2002 coup was irresponsibly provocative and hopelessly biased.
What would happen to a US broadcaster that urged open insurrection?
londonscot1 2 years ago
Londonscot, let me ask you something... If there had been TV during Hitler's rule, what would you consider "neutral" at the time, as you say? Would you expect TV channels to say "well, hes killing people, but on the bright side...!", how vague and useless is the concept of neutrality. I only believe in honesty.
In caracas: 60 deaths per day, everyday, mostly violent. Most doctors have left the country. 133 dollars minimum wage. No rice, sugar, coffee or milk in stores.
AngiePotter 2 years ago
AngiePotter - there is no comparison between Hitler and Chavez. Hitler was genocidal, racist and in charge of an almost uniquely militaristic and aggressive regime. Chavez is none of those things.
Do you honestly think that the "60 deaths per day" are all Chavez's fault? That "most doctors have left the country", that the standard of living has fallen for the poorest Venezuelans since 1998?
If so, I beg to differ.
londonscot1 2 years ago
AngiePotter - I am not uncritical of Chavez's government. I think the Bolivar is overvalued. Violent crime is way too high. Inflation needs to be checked. Corruption (a historic problem) hasn't been stamped out. And Chavez's personal style sometimes grates (although it obviously appeals to a majority of Venezuelans, which has to be respected).
But what post-Chavez government would dare to roll back the social programmes?
In that sense, Chavez has raised standards, and rightly so.
londonscot1 2 years ago
You have no idea what you're talking about when it comes to Chávez and my country...like Angie Potter said, give yourself a break from what you see in the media and make a trip to the poor parts of Venezuela. Lies change foreigners perceptions, especially when they don't know what it means to see your country turn to communism. Telling people that they can get anything they want without working is not the answer...not with 40% inflation after 10 years.
goldrinks 2 years ago
goldrinks said: "You have no idea what you're talking about when it comes to Chavez....give yourself a break from what you see in the media and make a trip to the poor parts of Venezuela..."
Let's keep things in perspective.
londonscot1 2 years ago
goldrinks said: "Telling people that they can get anything they want without working is not the answer...."
"The good old days"!
londonscot1 2 years ago
As one might expect, given the wide reach and anonymity of the Internet, I have encountered many thoughtful, intelligent people who enjoy my brand of humor and my deliberately zany take on things. I have also encountered some less informed types who equally appreciate my silliness related to world news. And lastly, there are both simpletons and academics who neither enjoy nor understand my efforts.
gnooze 2 years ago
gnooze / Marta - I respectfully suggest that you develop a thicker skin regarding criticism, particularly when it's constructive!
1582). Connoisseur of satire...even yours!
londonscot1 2 years ago
It is not of my concern into which class you happen to fall. But, finally, if I am correctly inferring your categorization of me as a teenager, thank you. After all, we Americans are nothing, if not youth-obsessed.
gnooze 2 years ago
gnooze / Marta - I'm pleased I guessed your age right. In the UK, the joke is that one of the classic signs of ageing is when policemen seem to get younger....TV presenters too?!
Re: satire. The UK has a great tradition. I subscribe to Private Eye magazine. Their basic philosophy is "that the world...is run by hypocrites and humbugs who are mainly helping themselves to money....provided by someone else and then slapping themselves on the back for their brilliant achievement".
londonscot1 2 years ago
gnooze / Marta -
Re: satire. At the risk of sounding patronising (which I truly don't intend), you should be more original and fearless in selecting your targets (ie don't just beat up the same targets as the MSM). Keep the script brainy as well as droll and punchy. And increase your international coverage to, say, 50/50.
Meanwhile, the very best of luck to you!

londonscot1 2 years ago
You don't know what it's like living under a dictatorship either, Venezuela is probably the most open democracy in the world. Certainly far more than in England. Just because you and your rich cronies don't like it, doesn't stop it being the case. There is no dictatorship in venezuela. It sickens me a bit that far-right nut jobs like you think that just because you live in a country it means that when you tell lies about that country, no one can challenge you.
Doniedaff 2 years ago
More blah blah. PAY ATTENTION: I LIVED IN VENEZUELA SINCE 1998 TO 2007. You do not even talk spanish and been there, and lived there, and then you come here to say YOUR BLAH BLAH ... AND THEN TALK!....NO TO CHAVEZ, AND NO TO ALL THOSE NON-VENEZUELAN TALKING ABOUT THE COUNTRY WITHOUT THE EXPERIENCE OF LIVING THERE!!!!
salva3131 2 years ago
Well if you don't want people who aren't venezuelan talking about it, then stop telling lies. Venezuela is not a dictatorship, that is a proven fact. Just because you lived in a country doesn't mean you should have free reign to tell blatant lies.
Another thing, the time frame you gave was only 9 years, so either you are only 11 or you are not originally Venezuelan yourself either.

And no, I'm not cynical. : )

We should celebrate through romantic displays rather than gifts - and yet if I showed up at your door to sing you a romantic song, you'd call the cops wouldn't you? :P
I'm surprised though, just the one pants suit joke.Thats gotta be some impressive restraint there.
Loreki 2 years ago
The pantsuit thing is funny. I don't get most of the jokes because, um, isn't it just a suit? And don't men wear them every day? Why do we call a ladies' suit a pantsuit?
I mean, skirt suit. Okay, fine, I'll grant you that. But pants being a traditional part of a suit and all, the designation "pantsuit" befuddles me.
gnooze 2 years ago
I think with Hillary Clinton its mostly about her efforts to look a little bit male as well as female. To evoke both the emotional reactions of strength associated with men, and the empathy of women.
Maybe the more apt joke (and good for you to do propwise) is to play her with a small moustache. Cause thats basically what she's going for.
As a word i'm not sure why its a pants suit. Other than that business men may still be semi-hostile to change and women and think its weird they wear pants.
Loreki 2 years ago
We don't call them "pantsuits" here in the UK.

That is so stupid!!!! If a man spends $156 on me, I'd rather he just put it in my savings account.
